The Beaverton Chamber of
Commerce i preparing for an
other of its rousing get-to-gether
meetings, to be held on Thursday
evening, October 14. The cham
ber realizes that if its efforts are
effective it must have the co
operation of all the people of
' Beaverton. and to unite and
and consolidate a sentiment fav
orable to the betterment and
progress of our town, is the
purpose it is endeavoring to ac
complish. Sentiment is a dispo
sition prompting action or ex
pression, and the olub wants
action. Sentiment does more
than that it urges it forces
action. An appeal to it is a cry
t the highest emotion. Through
sentiment families are brought
together, towns are builded up,
nations welded in an indissolu
ble bond and entire strangers
are knit into an endearing frind
Bhip. It is only when we depart
from true sentiment into the
reiJms of the sentimental that
we go back. The Chamber cf
Commerce wants a bigger, bet
ter town it wants progress, and
it believes all Beaverton citizens
want the same thing, then why
not get together in common and
work together? The results will
be surprising. Come out and
spend a pleasant evening.
It is proposed by the Interna
tional Congress for Thrift that
the president and governors of
the states designate a day, the
Sunday before Labor Day, as
Thrift Day. The idea is a good
one, and the labor arganizations
f the country are supporting it.
The constant application of thrift
will make the worjd a better
place to live in. There will be
fewer inmates of charitable in
stitutions, fewer applications for
alms, lesa poverty and more
fcappines3. It is proposed to es
tablish state as well as national
headquarters for the association,
and an active campaign under
taken for educating the easy
iuig and thoughtless. The
world belongs to the thrifty man.
We all realize that no talent, ho
circumstance, no opportunity
will make amah a success in life
without the virtue' of thrift,
hence the movement for a na
tional Thrift Day is receiving
encouragement. .
