Clair Gurney are here from LaGrande to spend the Thanks giving holidays at the home of Mrs Gurney's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Little john. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Jenkins, sons and daughter left by automobile Sat urday night on a visit to relatives in Seattle, where they were to spend Thanksgiving. - Lieutenant and Mrs. John S. Winn, Jr., arrived Wednesday from Fort Lewis to spend the Thanksgiving holi days at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. S. LeGrow here. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Cannon and two daughters, accompanied by Mrs. Zel tha Mclntyre, came over from Walla Walla Friday evening and attended the high school play. Louis Keeen, Lester Towne and George Pittman accompanied Mrs. Keen to Walla Walla Saturday when she left for Enumclaw, Washington, for a fortnight's visit. Millard Kelly has purchased the cottage of Mrs. D. A. Gholson, locat ed on Adams street, between Fourth and Fifth. Mr. Kelley has establish ed bachelor quarters therein. M. L. Watts and Fred Remillard have leased shooting privileges on a pond in the Touchet district and are anticipating successful duck-hunting during the short open season. Miss Genevieve Rogers came over from Seattle to spend Thanksgiving at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Rogers. Miss Rogers will return to Seattle Sunday evening. Fred McKinley has returned to Spa kane after visiting his father and brother here. Fred contemplates en tering Cheney Normal school at the beginning of the second semester. Mountain roads are now passable in the upland rural districts, since snow was broken by teams and sleds. How ever, mud interferes to some extent with travel. In the higher altitudes the snow in some places is four feet deep. Four secondary roads in Umatilla county have been designated by the state highway commission for a total distance of 64.86 miles. The roads include the Weston-Elgin highway, the Umatilla river road and the Wal la Walla river road. Mr. and Mrs. T. L. McBride recent ly had as dinner guests at their farm home, southeast of Athena Mr. and Mrs. Charles Winn of Couse Creek; Dr. and Mrs. McKinney of Weston; Mr. and Mrs. Ivan Clark of Athena, and Mrs. Iva York of Milton. Percy Osborn, who is coach of the Marshfield high school football team which played Jefferson high at Port land yesterday, lived in Athena with his mother and Dr. Osborn, his broth er, in 1917, and was a student of Athena high school that year. A family party enjoying the Thanksgiving holidays at the home of Mr. and Mrs, B. B. Richards include, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Whiteman and family, and Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Rider from Yakima, Mr. H. II. Hill and Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Hill and daughter, of Walla Walla. Mrs. Glenn Dudley and son Glenn, Jr., Mrs. M. L. Watts and Mrs. May Johns arrived safely at their destina tions in California last week. The trip was made by automobile, and with the exception of passage through the Siskiyou mountains the highway was in good condition. William Hammer, whose illness was mentioned in The Press last week, passed away Friday at Walla Walla, as the result of a paralytic stroke. Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton, Wayne Pinkerton and Mr. and Mrs. Laurance Pinkerton attended the funeral, which was held at Dayton, Washington, Sun day. Carder, who visited her son, Martin. . v There are about twenty cases of chicken pox among the school chil dren of Pendleton and the city nhysi cian has taken precautions to prevent a spread of the disease. The local unemployment relief fund is ?20 richer as a result of the sue cess of the high school play. That amount was 20 per cent of the net receipts from two nights of the show. s. a. A basketball game is scheduled for Monday night at the high school gym, between the Athletics, Athena's town team and the Pendleton Buicks, an ex-Pendleton high school all-star team. The high school band furnished music for the Athena-Pendleton town team basketball game Monday eve ning, ihe music was greatly appre ciated by team members and the pat rons of the game. The county court has decided to grade and surface the road leading from LaMar school east to Weston This new road will connect with the road north from Athena to the Watts ranch on Pine Creek. Recently speaking of Tom Gilkey's mother, who resides at Oaksdale, Wash., the Tribune of that city said Oaksdale's pioneer woman, Grandma Gilkey, was the guest of honor at a party given by a number of her friends Thursday afternoon, cn the occasion of Mrs. Gilkey reaching her 90th year. Henry Barrett has received a band of sheep in Athena for the Bank of California, Portland. The sheep were trailed here from Prairie City and on account of deep snow in the moun tains the herders were three weeks making the trip. The sheep, eleven hundred in the band, will be wintered near Wallula. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pittman enter tained at a family dinner Thanksgiv ing day when the following guests were present: Mrs. Nellie St. Dennis, Ronan and Arlee St. Dennis, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Payant and children, Junior and Lester of Weston; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Pittman and son Donald and George Pittman. Mrs. Amanda Denton, widow of John Denton, a former Weston har ness dealer, died at her home in San Pedro, California, November 21. She was Amanda Beeler before her mar riage, a member of a well known pio neer family of Weston. She is sur vived by one sister, Mrs.-Cleo Beeler Harvey, of Portland. The assembly room of the Knights of Pythias has been completely ren ovated and is most attractive. The walls have been cleaned and calsomin ed a soft tan shade with ivory ceiling. All hangings have been cleaned and furniture repaired and polished. Plans are being made for improvements in the dining room and dressing rooms. A pleasant social afternoon was en joyed, last Friday, by members of the Jolly Twenty club at the home of Mrs. Fred Gross near Athena. Mrs. Claude Dickenson and Mrsr Bryce Baker were guests. At the tea hour the hostess served refreshments. The next meet ing will be held Friday afternoon, De cember 4 at the home of Mrs. A. W. Logsdon. Harl Robie was in town from the road camp north of Athena, Wednes day. The snow storm has slowed up grading work on the new road, for a time at least. It will require about two weeks to complete grading which has now reached a point near LaMar school house. From there the grade extends north to the Watts ranch on Pine Creek. Clever costuming was an attractive feature and the several numbers were enthusiastically received by a good sized audience. The program follows: First and second grades Play, "Children's Adventure." The annual parcel post package sale was a feature of the afternoon's en tertainment when the Methodist Ladies' club met at the church Thurs day afternoon of last week. The sum of $4.85 was realized from the sale. A business session and program were followed by a no hostess luncheon.
