Mr. and Mrs. Harold Gray of Mil ton were recent guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. 0. Schubert. Mrs. Alma Koontz of Portland has been a house guest this week at the home of Mrs. Henry' Dell here. The Thimble club will meet next Tuesday afternoon November 10 at the home of Mrs. Arthur Jenkins. Mr. and Mrs. Dean Dudley were dinner guests Friday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Swift. Henry Koepke, Jr., has completed seeding his ranch in the vicinity of Helix and has moved to the Athena farm. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koepke, Jr., attended a dancing party at the Wal la Walla Country club last Friday night. ' Miss Lela Schubert is temporarily employed in the bookkeeping depart ment of the Peacock Mill company at Freewater. Ralph McEwen, Jr., who suffered a relapse last week has recovered and is employed at the M. L. Watts ranch near Athena. Mrs. Ella Downing, who has been visiting her sister, Mrs. Amiel Schu bert, has returned to her home in Wallowa county. Mr. and Mrs. George Ayers and Mrs. Jacob Proebstel were visitors at the home of Mrs. M. M. Johns Sun day, motoring here from Wallula. Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Sias, in charge of the boys home at Turner, Oregon, entertained Saturday last, the occas ion being annual open house day. Mrs. C. A. Davis, donor of the home, was the guest of honor. Mrs. M. M. Johns has received word that her sister, Mrs. Andrew Proeb stel, who has heen seriously ill at her home in Vancouver, Washington is improving. Miss Helen Hansell and Miss Kath leen Radtke, Miss Inez McClure and Miss Adeline Mclntyre of Pendleton spent last evening with Miss Lucille Winn at Cayuse. Mrs. Edith Lumsden was a visitor here from her Dry Creek ranch Wed nesday. Mrs. Lumsden recently suf fered severe burns on her arm but is slowly improving. Dan Tilley who has been ill at his home in Walla Walla has returned to his duties at the Athena high school. Mr. Tilley suffered an attack of appendicitis and influenza. Charles Mays has returned from Caldwell, Idaho, where he transact ed business. Last week-end he made a trip to Prairie City, and left yester day for his home in Portland. Mrs. George Sheard, sister-in-law of Joe Sheard, accompanied by her son and family, were at the Sheard home over the week-end en route by automobile from their home in North Dakota to California, where they will spend the winter. Mrs. Margaret Banister and her sister, Mrs. H. McArthur arrived from Portland Wednesday night, where they have been staying at Mrs. Mc Arthur's home for some time. Mrs. McArthur contemplates spending the winter in California. Mrs. Izora Charlton, who has been visiting for the past month at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Star Charlton has returned to her home at La Grande. She was accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Charlton who spent the week-end in LaGrande. Mrs. Harry Saulsberry and son have arrived in Athena from Bryn Mawr, Washington, to reside here. Mr. Saulsberry will travel back and forth between here and Freewater, where he is conducting a grain ware house and will establish a chop mill. Merle Johnson who has been em ployed for some time in Pendleton, spent last week visiting his mother in Portland. In company with two friends he has gone to Phoenix, Ari zona, where he has accepted a posi tion. The young men made the trip by motor. Mrs. F. M. Adair and Mr. and Mrs. Robert Adair visited at the homes of Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Pinkerton and Mr. and Mrs. Lisle Gray Sunday. The visitors were en route by motor from their home at Potlatch, Idaho to Port land where they will visit relatives for a time. The funeral of Mrs. A. B. Stephens, mother of Omer Stephens, who died at Pendleton last week, was held Fii day afternoon from the Folsom chapel in Pendleton. Mrs. Stephens if re membered in Athena where she often visited her son, Omer, when he was engaged in business here. The 0. D. 0. club met at the home of Mrs. Ethel Montague, Thursday af. ternoon of last week. The nine mem bers present enjoyed a social after noon, the hostess serving refresh' ments at the tea hour. The next meet ing will be at the home of Mrs. Archie Mclntyre Thursday afternoon November 12. The pupils of the LaMar district school, assisted by their teacher, Mrs. Swift, were hosts at a Hallowe'en party last Friday afternoon. Hal lowe'en decorations and games lent festive air to the occasion and guests included parents and friends. Cider and doughnuts were the appro priate refreshments served. Mrs. Jennie Hovda spent last week end at the home of Rev. and Mrs. C. H. Northrop, having arrived here Fri day from Portland with her son, Rev. Clifford Hovda who proceeded to On tario, Oregon, where he conducted services Sunday. The two visitors and Rev. Green of Milton were dinner guests at the Northrop home Friday evening. Accompanied by a series of rumb ling and clatter the highway crew moved their equipment to the La Mar district Saturday where work is now going forward on the road. Cook house trucks and machinery made an interesting caravan. That the work progressing is evidenced by the scries of blasts heard from that di rection. Captain and Mrs. Eagle who had been visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kershaw, and left Satur- ay morning for their home at Van couver, Washington, will proceed, shortly, on a trip to California where they will spend several months mak ing their headquarters near San Diego where they own several acres of avacados. Gordon Watkins were addi tional guests. Awards for the eve nings play were made to Mrs. Laur ence Pinkerton and Arthur Douglas who held high score. " v Mrs. Glenn Dudley and son Glenn, Jr., accompanied by Mrs. M. L. Watts and Mrs. M. M. Johns will leave for California by motor Monday, Novem ber 16. Mrs. Dudley will visit her mother in Los Angeles and Mrs. Johns will spend the winter at the home of her son near Hollywood. Mrs. Watts will spend a month, with her daughter Mrs. Clason Adams at Palo Alto. Mrs. Justin Harwood entertained the 3 o' 4 Bridge club Thursday eve ning of last week at her home on High street. Mrs. Lowe and Mrs, Penn Harris were guests and Mrs. Lowe received an attractive guest prize. Mrs. E. C. Prestbye won high score and Mrs. M. I. Miller received the consolation. The next meeting will occur at the home of Mrs. Max Hopper, At a meeting Wednesday afternoon of the Christian Missionary Society at the home of Mrs. J. W. Pinkerton, Mrs. Pinkerton was elected president of the society in place of Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton, resigned. Mrs. Stella Keen was elected secretary. The next meet ing is scheduled to be at the home of Mrs. Fred Kershaw, the first Wednes day in December, the hostess being assisted by Mrs. Lew McNair. The carnival given by the Adams high school was a signal success Sat urday night. Those attending from Athena were, Leland Jenkins, Lester Towne, Solista Pickett, Garth Pink erton, Arleen Myrick, Mrs. George Myrick, Mary Berlin, Myrtle Camp bell, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Campbell, Mr. and Mrs. John Huffman, Mr. and Mrs. H. S. Swift, Mr. and Mrs. Rose- berry. Honoring Mrs. E. C. Prestbye and Max Hopper, Mrs. Hopper entertain ed at dinner and bridge Friday eve ning. The affair was a birthday party for the honorees and the prettily ap pointed table was centered with colorful cluster of fall flowers. James Lieuallen won at bridge and others present were, Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Harwood, E. C. Prestbye, Mrs. Lieu allen, Solista Pickett, the honorees and hostess. Spirits and goblins were abroad Saturday night, in celebration of the old festival All Saints eve. The strat ling appearances of jack o' lanterns accompanied by shrieks and wierd calls filled the early hours, and later groups of spooks were seen flitting obscurely from place to place, and without doubt on mischief bent. But the city marshal assisted by his deputies, patrolled the streets so faithfully that the usual depredations were not possible this year. Only a few pranks were played and those were not of a serious nature. Halloween stunts and progressive pedro provided entertainment for the guests at a party at the home of Miss Mary Tompkins, Thursday eve ning of last week. First prizes were won by Miss Frances Cannon and Walter Huffman, Emma Ringel re ceiving the consolation. Decorations tally cards and refreshments were in keeping with the Halloween idea and those present were, Marjorie Douglas Betty Eager, Emma Ringel, Myrtle Campbell, lhelma bchrimpf, Frances Cannon, Wayne Pinkerton, Walter Huffman, Arthur Crowley and Wil ford Miller. ' One of the most festive occasions of last week was the Hallowe'en party given by the Girls' League, guests be ing the Athena high school students The afair was in the nature of a "hard-times" party and guests ap peared in various dilapidated cos tumes appropriate to tne occasion and which afforded much merriment. Bob Rose was presented a prize for the best costume. Games were play ed during the evening and refresh ments of cider and doughnuts were served. Decorations of Hallowe'en reminders made the party room at tractive. Mr. and Mrs. Don Wilks were guests of the Athena Pinochle club which met Wednesday evening of last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. A. L, Jenkins on Jefferson street. Sixteen were present, making up four tables of the club game. High scores were made by Mrs. Jesse Smith and George Brace, and Mr. and Mrs. C. E. 0. Montague received the consolation prizes. The hostess was assisted in serving refreshments by Mrs. Mon tague and Mrs. W. E. Campbell. The next meeting of the club will be held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Camp bell and Mrs. George Brace and Mrs. Phillip Remillard will serve refresh ments. Weirdly shaded lights, myriads of black cats, bats and ghostly appari tions greeted the guests at a Hallow een party Saturday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur Harden, when Mrs. Harden and Miss Edna DeFreece entertained. The guests arrived garb ed in children's clothes, the girls be ing most attractive in pinafores and kiddish accessories while the men looked and felt the part in knickers and bow tics. Delicious ice cream and dain ty cakes were served at a long table covered with an orange and black cloth, and glowing with black candles, Places were marked by large black cats with arched backs, and ribbons emanating from pumpkins bore cards on which fortunes were written in in visible ink. By holding these over the candles the words : appeared in eerie fashion" and the guests were in formed of what the future holds for them. The guest list included, Mr, and ,Mrs. Wilburn Kayser, George Gross, Jessiedeane Dudley, Alberta Charlton, , Leonard Geissel, Thelma Schrimpf, Walter Huffman, James Hodgen and Wilbur Harden.
