One copy, one year.... ....$2.00 O ne co py , six months $ 1.00 One copy, three months .75 Athena, Oregon, November 6, 1931 A report shows that gifts of the Rockefeller foundation for the year 1931 have totaled $15,000,000, while the balance of the principal fund re mains at $143,000,000. Universities shared in the Rockefeller liberality, both here and abroad. Yale received over $1,500,000. A gift of $547,000 was made to the. University of Chi cago. Columbia received $204,000, while over $875,000 went to Harvard. Other American and foreign univer sities received liberal gifts including those in France, Poland, England, China, Japan and Germany. Hardly a public welfare activity that was not touched by Rockefeller generosity. Some "of the gifts were Medical sci ence $359,000, social science $642, 000, public health $2,700,000, research programs $1,300,000, natural science $198,000, . fellowships and grants $1,180,000 land and buildings $3,000,- 000, and administration $872,000. '" o An increasing demand for public health nurses in schools and in rural and industrial sections is being felt throughout the country, according to Miss Mary Sewall Hardncr, national membership chairman. "This is due, I feel to the stringency of economic conditions which have focused the public and professional eye on the importance of public health nursing." Public health nurses will face this year "the most challenging winter in the history of the profession," she states. ball prowess Saturday, was that U. of O. defeated New York 14 to 6 and O. S. C. lost to Washington State College 6 to 7. Nevertheless there will be a great homecoming day down at Eugene soon. Living on cocoanuts and wild pork for three months those Cocos isle castaways found themselves anemic when rescued. Well, anyway they had three squares a day, even though they found no vitamins in their fare. o ' Worthless checks were passed on Benton county turkey growers last year and the county agent is warning the growers to be on their guard this season. He advises the establishment of a central buying agency, where all transactions may be cleared, o Here's the way they do it in Hun gary. A. bank was robbed oi $iu,- 000. Thirty-six hours after, the rob ber was apprehended and put on trial at 10 a. m. At 6:25 the same afternoon he was hanged, Hungary is showing the way. Practically all grain in Wallowa county was stored on the farms at harvest time and only a small per centage of the crop has been sold With the rise in price, Wallowa farm ers are now hauling their wheat to market. Now Sullivans Gulch, once the dumping grounds of the city, is to be a beauty spot in Portland. A Cali fornian named Lloyd is ready to build a $3,000,000 hotel and the gulch is in eluded in his landscaping scheme. In what was perhaps his last pub lic statement, made last summer to the National Electric Light Associa tion, the late Thomas A. Edison said: "My message to you is to be cour ageous. I have lived a long time. I have seen history repeat itself again and again. I have seen many de pressions in business. Always Amer ica has come out strong and more prosperous. Be as brave as your fathers were before you. Have faith go forward." o By comparison, as revealed in sta tistics given by the United States Department of Commerce, in 1900 there were 20,766 Oregon farms free from mortgaged debt as against 19, 754 in 1930, and farms under mort gaged indebtedness increased from 7,010 in 1900 to 23,070 in 1930. The above barometer of farm indebted ness indicates conclusively the grad ual slowing up agricultural progress in this state over a ten year period. With a world crop of dried prunes placed at two-thirds as large as last season, Milton - Freewater storage houses should not be so full of prunes after the first of the year. Almost double in price what wheat was a month ago, it is a hard jolt to those farmers who were compelled to sell their grain when quotations were in the 30's. Well, anyway a whale 's a whale; in the quick or pickled. Reports of large groups of swans making their appearance again at points in the Pacific Northwest, would indicate that these beautiful birds are either fast multiplying as the result of protective restrictions, or else they are returning to their former haunts after a long period of habitation in other sections of the country. Seattle and Klamath Lake report the swan in large numbers. That the Josephine county food conservation project is effective is evidenced by the fact that at one field alone more than 50 families call ed for tomntoes and took them away in 100 or 200 pound lots. This ex change and distribution of food among needy families Is carried on through the granges of the county. In these hard times the necessity and value of agricultural cooperatives have been proven time and again. The farmer who belongs to a cooper alive, has, in many instances, receiv ed a good deal better price than the farmer who has done business inde pendently. This is especially true in the case of the dairy industry. If we are to legislate against guns, we may just as well legislate against knives, axes, automobiles, ropes and such household medicines as iodine. All of these have been, and can be, used in the commission of crime. It is true that they have useful and in nocent purposes. But so have guns. o Weston keeps the mountain po tato on the market map by boosting it with an annual potato show. The show merits a creditable attendance of Athena citizens. Show dates are today and tomorrow and interesting programs have been arranged for your entertainment. o Premier Manuel Azana is said to have the largest jaw of any man in Spain. When he worked it the other day while assuming the dictatorship of his country, he said: "The Span ish republic is not in danger, but we are facing an illegal opposition which must be smashed!" The difference between University pi Oregon and Oregon State in foot- Gandhi is nobody's goat. He has one of his own. What is not going on in American cities? Such thoughts flood into your mind as you read Judge Wilkerson's state ment from the bench about the Ca pone trial. The judge said D'Andrea, discovered in the courtroom at the trial with a revolver in his belt,, was a member of the "outlaw gang" that intimidated government witnesses and ordered defense witnesses to per jure themselves. The outlaw organization headed by Capone, Judge Wilkerson asserted, "exercises a control over people with whom it comes into contact that re sembles nothing less than insurrec tion against the laws of the United States." "The court would have been blind indeed if he had not noticed the in timidation of witnesses under his eye. The respondent (D'Andrea) sat be hind the defendant, t loaded revolver in his pocket, while Capone glared at witnesses as they faltered in their testimony and were unable to remem ber things in connection with Ca pone's business," the judge said. It is a picture for the American people to contemplate. D'Andrea, with his loaded revolver, ready and waiting, just behind Capone and in a courtroon! Capone, on trial, with his gunman at his back, glaring at witnesses with the ferocity of a tiger! Under Capone's glare and his gun- mans stare, witnesses ialtered in their testimony and were unable to "remember"! And all this under the very eye of a judge in an American courtroom happily a judge with the nerve and courage to describe it and to apply the penalties of the law to the all-powerful gang leader and his gunman. Judge Wilkerson said gamblers had been summoned to Capone's "camp" and told to testify concerning his losses on horse race bets. The de fense testimony, he added, was a "shocking arrayal of perjury." Again there arises the question, "What is not going on in American cities?" And how long, oh, how long, will the American people and their boast ed civilization continue to tolerate organized crime and its blood-thirsty exponents ? A very pretty wedding was solemn ized in Walla Walla early Wednes day morning, when Miss Nettie El liott became the wife of Mr. Casper Woodward, Rev. S. G. Fisher of the Central Christian church officiating. The wedding was a quiet one, at .the home of the bride's mother, only the immediate friends and relatives of the contracting parties being present. Fred Koontz is carrying his right hand in a sling as the result of a se vere cut, which he received at the M. E. church Sunday night. 'While in the act of closing a sliding door he thrust his right hand through the glass with the result that a broken fragment caused a wound which necessitated Dr. Sharp taking four stitches. McBride with only one third of his seeding complet ed. A. B. McEwen and J. A. Kirk had considerable seeding to do, also. At a meeting of the school board Tuesday evening, it was decided to put a new stove in the primary room and also install protectors around the stoves in four of the rooms. The beard will also investigate the cost of wiring the school building for electric lights. An incipient fire in the cottage oc cupied by Mrs. Watts, on Jefferson street, caused considerable excitement in that neighborhood, Monday. ; The fire which started from an overheated stove, did little damage and was ex tinguished by Mrs. Watts and an other lady. The members of the Athena band meet regularly for rehearsals, and considerable progress is noted. The band room is a good place for the boys during the long winter evenings. Their time is profitably spent, and by their efforts, Athena will soon have a splendid band.
