Iva Mae Arkell has been a flu vic tim this week. M. L. Watts spent last week-end near Lehman Springs hunting. V. J. Kirk is serving in circuit court this week as a juryman. Mrs. Henry Dell is ill at her home with a severe case of laryngitis. Mrs. C. M. Eager and daughters spent Thursday in Walla Walla. Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Harder and Mrs. W. J. Kirk spent Thursday in Walla.- Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton and children spent Saturday visiting in Milton. Mrs. Alma Koontz is reported ill and in a hospital in Portland for treatment. Mrs. Roy Johnston has been ill at her home on West Jefferson Btrect this week. Pan Tilley left Wednesday evening for Spokane where he will spend the week-end. Mrs. M. W. Hansell is hostess to the Athena Bridge club at her home this afternoon. Mrs. Henry Booher is in Portland visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. John Shick. Mrs. Ellen F. Potter was hostess to the ladies of the Pinochle club yester day afternoon. Mrs. Lisle Gray and son Dale have been confined to their home this week with severe colds. Clark Key of Umapine took a band of sheep to the J. C. Scott farm west of town, Monday. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. McBride of Portland are visitors in Athena and vicinity this week. Miss Edna DeFreece returned homo Monday evening after several days spent in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Oliver of Bend visited at the C. E. 0. Montague home Wednesday evening. Leon Miller will again try his luck at hunting Sunday. But he declares himself to be a crowd. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Frazier and daughter were Saturday guests at the J. W. Pinkerton home. Mr. and Mrs. E. F. Bloom will leave this afternoon for Seattle where they will spend the week-end. Bert Logsdon, F. B. Boyd, Max Hopper and Herbert Parker are hunt ing and fishing in the Deschutes country this week. Miss Edna Zerba of Pendleton spent the past week with her brother, Forrest Zerba and family. Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Shick and Mrs. Edra Harder of Walla Walla visited relatives in Athena Sunday. Rev. and Mrs. Northrup in com pany with friends of Pendleton are spending the week in Portland. Mrs. Gail Anderson and Mrs. J. C. Baker of Walla Walla spent Tuesday afternoon at the Anderson home. Mrs. Izora Charlton of LaGrande has been a visitor the past ten days at the home of her son, S. C. Charlton. H. I. Watts, F. S. LeGrow and Everett Rothrock were near Toll Gate last week hunting. " They had no suc cess. ": Miss Olive Calef and Miss Hazel Williamson, local teachers are spend ing the week-end with friends in Port land. Sunday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Penn Harris here, were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cattanack of Walla Walla. Wayne Banister, Jack Weber and John Kirk left Wednesday for Wal lowa Lake on a hunting trip over the week-end. George Harkenrider of Pendleton is taking care of the Union Oil plant this week during the absence of Mr. Lawrence. Clarence Hand went to Portland this week as a delegate for the Wes ton Lodge to the Knights of Pythias convention. ' The Athena school , is dismissed for yesterday and today on account, of the county institute which is being held in Pendleton. Maybelle Duncan is a delegate from Walla Walla at the Washington State Nurses Convention held in Yaki ma this week.- Mrs. D. H. Sanders is home after a visit with her daughter, Mrs. Robert Norris, at Medford, also in Portland with her son. Word has been received here that Miss Delia Bryant is ill in a Port land hospital, following an operation for sinus trouble. x Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pittman and sons Wayne and George left Wednes day evening on a hunting trip in the Blue Mountains. A. II. Hayfield of Colfax, Wash., vis ited Athena friends Tuesday. Mr. Hayfield is an extensive sheepman of the Palouse country. The young people of the B. Y. P. U. society of the Baptist church en joyed a weiner roast Wednesday eve ning at Thorn Hollow. Lew McNair and C. 0. Henry are delegates to the K. of P. Grand Lodge jin Portland representing Pythian 'Lodge, No. 29 at Athena. Athena high school held a pep rally Friday night before the the foot ball game between Pendleton and Athena Saturday afternoon. Miss Arleen Myrick is assisting at Watkins' Pharmacy during the ab sence of Leonard Geissel who is on a hunting trip in Grant county. Mr. and Mrs. Armand DeMerritt and son Dell of Walla Walla were week-end visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Dell in Athena. , Lester Hicks enjoyed a pleasant surprise last week, when his father Mr. Hicks of Southern Oregon, visit ed him at the home of Mrs. Potter. Mr. and Mrs. E. II. Leonard were in Athena last week visiting it the home of Mrs. Margaret Banister, en route home from a visit to Portland. M. I. Miller and Leo Geissel will leave this evening for Ritter on a hunting trip to the Geissel-Arbogast stock ranch. They will return Sun day. The" first of a series of dances to be given by a recently organized club called ''Good-Time Dancing Club", will bo held tonight at the Evergreen hall. Mr. and Mrs. Matt Shaw and son of Walla Walla were week-end visit ors at the C. E. 0. Montague home, returning to their home Monday eve ning. Mrs. Lloyd Miehener is acting as reporter for the Press this week in the absence of Mrs. Ralph McEwen who is visiting her parents in New berg. Mrs. John Stanton and daughter Mildred were visitors in Pendleton Tuesday evening. Miss Stanton at tended a nurses meeting for trained nurses. Mrs. W. T. Solvester of Blalock on the Columbia, spent the week-end with her sister and mother, Mrs. Frank Little and Mrs. McKinney re spectively. Mr, and Mrs. Caruthers of Adams are the parents of a son born last Friday. Mrs. Caruthers will be re membered as Theo Kirk a former Athena girl. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Cornell left Fri day morning by motor for Vale for several days visit. They were accom panied as far as Ontario by Mrs. Fred Kershaw. The Etude club will meet next Tues day evening at the home of Mrs. Bryee Baker. Mrs. Baker will also be hostess to the 3 o' 4 club on Thurs day afternoon. Melba Montague left Thursday morning for Walla Walla to spend the remainder of the week visiting Mr. and Mrs. Matt Shaw and Mr. and Mrs. Whitehead. Mrs. D. A. Finkerton accompanied her son L. R. Pinkerton to Lewiston, Idaho, yesterday morning. The form er will visit relatives at Clarkston and return Sunday. Morton and Helen Lauridson of Seattle visited last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. B. Foster near Athena. Both are students at the University of Washington. Athena friends will be pleased to learn that Mr. and Mrs. Chris Thocny have returned from California and bought blick their old hom plac near Weston. There is no place like home to Chrisj and next year he will be bringing his fine vegetables and strawberries to Athena customers. Miss Sadie Pambrun was up from Pendleton Sunday visiting friends and relatives here. She returned in the evening. Miss Pambrun is employed in a beauty shop in that city. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wydick, Mrs. Rowena Bedell, and Mrs. Eura Price of Walla Walla were among pioneer friends calling upon Mrs. Hulda Mc Kinney Thursday of last week. Rachel Smith who makes her home with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Johnston is spending the week-end at the M. L. Watts farm with her parents. Little Ardella Johnston accompanied her. Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Walters of Mil ton visited their nephew and niece, Max and Bonnie Johnson last Thurs day at the home of their grandpar ents, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton. Miss Helen Hansell and Miss Kath leen Radtke returned Sunday evening from Pullman where they were guests over the week-end, attending the W. S. C.-U. C. L. A.-football game Sat urday. Mrs. B. D. Tharp, Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Duncan and daughter Marjorie of Walla Walla spent Sunday in Athe na visiting Mrs. Laura Froom. Mrs. Tharp also called on Mrs. D. A. Pink erton. Mrs. Nellie Taylor is over from her home in Walla Walla, where she is established in an apartment in one of Casper Woodward's residences, and is spending the week at the Sheldon Taylor home. After a week's tour to Portland, Seattle and way points Mr. and Mrs. Earl Smith returned home Monday. Mr. Smith resumed his work Tuesday as miller at the Preston-Shaffer Mil ling company. Mrs. Jacob Proebstel, in company with her daughter, Mrs. George Ayers of Wallula, arrived from Port land Saturday and will be a guest of her sister, Mrs. M. M. Johns for a couple of weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Radtke with Mrs. F. B. Boyd as their guest, motor ed to McDougal and Langdon Lake Sunday and spent the day, finding both of the popular mountain- resorts practically deserted. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Catron were hosts to the Kill Kare club Wednesday evening. Four tables of Pinochle were in play with Mr. and Mrs. Dick Swift winning high score and Mr. and Mrs. M. I. Miller consolation. Light refreshments were served at the close of the evening. Coach Miller took Ralph Moore, high school half back to Walla Walla Monday, for an X-ray to find out how seriously his back was injured. No bones were broken but muscles torn loose results in a very sore back. Mrs. Lilian Fredericks has returned from a visit to her sister and family, Mrs. Levi Hughes, at Santa Fe, New Mexico, accompanying her brother, Chas. Proebstel, who also lives there. Mrs. Fredericks will be at the Athena Hotel Saturday to open her classes in piano. Aaron Douglas who was injured resulting in a broken leg at last Saturday's football game is progres sing nicely. The boy was taken to Walla Walla to Dr. J. N. Joanson for an X-ray. The picture showed a clean break just above the ankle. Dr. Elmer Hill placed the injured limb in a cast. Mr. Blair journey ed to The Dalles to visit Mrs. Blair who is in a hospital in that city. Mr. and Mrs. Alf Johnson of Walla Walla, Mr. Al Johnson and daughter Mrs. Ethel Montague of Athena drove to La Grande Sunday over the Old Oregon Trail highway. Sunday was the first time the elder Mr. Johnson had been over the road since it was paved.
