THE PRESS, ATHENA, OREGON, SEPTEMBER 18, 1931 Press Paragraphs Dan Tilley was a week-end visitor in Walla Walla. E. C. Rogers transacted business in Walla Walla, Wednesday. Mrs. Louis Keen is visiting relatives at Enumclaw, Washington. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dudley were Walla Walla visitors Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Johnson were Sunday guests of Mr. and Mrs. Frank McDonald in Milton. Miss Hazel Williamson spent the last week-end at the home of her parents in Pendleton. Fay and Cecil Pambrun have been hauling wood from the mountains to the ranch south of town. Mrs. A. A. Kimball of Pendleton spent several days last week at the B. B. Kichards home here. M. L. Pinkerton and Mrs. Will Pinkerton spent Tuesday in Pendleton. George Ferguson, well-known au tomobile salesman of Pendleton, was in Athena Monday. Scollard motored here from Arling ton Sunday and visited friends.' Lester Towne and Walter Edger re cently enjoyed a week's outing at Cold Springs and Langdon Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Tompkins were recent guests at the home of Mr. Tompkins' sister, Mrs. A. R. Coppock. Fred Radtke will leave Sunday for Eugene to enter University of Oregon and take up the studies of his junior year. Leonard Geissel will enjoy a hunt ing trip in company with his brother Herman and Glenn Arbogast in Grant county, out from Ritter. Among Athena sportsmen, are John Standaee and William McPherson leaving for a hunting trip on the John Day the last of this week. Mr. and Mrs. Clint Brown of Pen dleton, were Athena visitors Sunday Mr. Brown is machinist Linotype op erator in the East Oregonian compos ing room. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Zerba of Spo kane with their three children were recent guests at the Clarence Zerba home on the Casper Woodward farm The two are brothers. Mrs. Charles Pinkerton, well-known teacher of Weston, will this year teach in the Reith schools. Mr. and Mrs. Pinkerton have moved from Weston to Reith to reside. Mr. and Mrs. 0. 0. Stephens and Mrs. A. A. Kimball of Pendleton and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Betts were Sunday dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Richards. Entering upon his fifth successive year as bus driver for school district 11, Asa Swan has never had the sem blance of an accident during this time, nor has his bus been late. Mrs. Marion Jack of Pendleton, Miss Dorothy Jack and Eloise Jack have left for Eugene to spend the winter. Miss Dorothy Jack will at tend University of Oregon. Miss Olive Calef spent last week end visiting at the home of Miss Janice Gerking in Pendleton. The girls attended the University of Ore gon together and are sorority sis ters. Mr. J. E. McEachern, of Vancouver, Wash., who had been visiting at his old home in Ottawa, Canada, stopped over in Athena to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. McPherson last week Miss Hazel Williamson, Athena teacher, received word Wednesday of the death of her grandfather who has been ill for sometime in Portland. The funeral was held in Pendleton this afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koepke, Sr., arrived Sunday from their home at Glendale, California. They made the trip by motor and will spend several weeks visiting at the Koepke ranch, south of town. Mr. and Mrs. Will Kirk are . visit ing Mrs. Kirk's sister Mrs. 0. E. Bowman at John Day where she has recently moved from her former I home in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk will be away about a week. Miss Lois Johnson left the first of the week for Eugene where she will continue her stuides at the University of Oregon. She planned to visit her sister, Mrs. Beryl Hodgen at The Dalles for several days en route. Edzar Forrest, who farms land on the south Bide of the Umatilla river was in the city Monday. He has de cided to seed his land to peas in the spring unless assurance of a paying Drice for wheat exists at that time George Pittman, who returned for school from the Kirk place at Cres ton, B. C, reports having had a good time while away. George assisted in the harvest field and found time to take advantage of somo good fishing Miss Rose Ellen York, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ransey York, Dry Creek ranchers, was married on Sat urday afternoon to Clarence Travel- lie of College Place by Rev. Allen of the College Place Presbyterian church. Lloyd Michener, Lee Foster, Orel Michener and Wayne Pinkerton will leave tomorrow on a hunting trip in the John Day country. Arnold Wood, Dean Dudley and Dean Pinkerton pre- ceeded them to the hunting grounds yesterday. Levi Van Pelt, 19-year-old Umatil la Indian, was shot and wounded while fishing at Celilo Falls from property owned by W. T. Downes. Harry Issel, employee of Downs, was arrested and police said he admitted the shooting. Wendell Shigley came over from Walla Walla and spent the week-end with boy friends in Athena. Ho has been engaged in cutting wood in the mountains. He has decided to re main in Athena and will continue his high school studies. Billy Hansell is the proud possessor of a splendid bicycle which was re cently presented to him by his cousin Bobby Burroughs, of Seattle. BM has no trouble whatever in getting to school on time as he speeds along at a clipping rate of speed. Marville Zerba, son of Mr. and Mrs, Clarence Zerba, is attending Mc Laughlin high school at Milton Misses Virginia and Margery Ogden of Portland, nieces of Mrs. Zerba are living at the Zerba home and at tending school in Adams. Charles May was accompanied to his home in Ashland by Mrs. J. E. Jones, of Athena, and Mrs. Seth Hyatt of Weston. Mrs. Hyatt will stop at Klamath Falls to visit rela tives and Mrs. Jones will remain at the May home for a month. Roland Andre arrived here Wed nesday morning from Kelso Wash ington, to visit his mother, Mrs. W, S. Ferguson. Mr. Andre and Mrs, Ferguson left by motor in the after noon for Nampa, Idaho, where they ar visiting Mrs. Horace Belnap. Mrs. Will Campbell, Mrs. Arthur Jenkins and Mrs. Ed Montague were members of a committer who motor' ed to Adams Monday to invite the Adams Rebekahs here for Friday evening, September 25, when the local lodge entertains in honor of the state president. . ' ; The Methodist Missionary bociety will meet Wednesday, September 23 at the home of Mrs. Frank Little. The officers for the year are as follows: Mrs. W. 0. Read, president; Mrs. Frank Little, vice-president; Mrs. D. A. Lowe, secretary-treasurer; Mrs. L. A. Cornell, reporter. MissMary Cameron arrived in Athena Saturday from Portland and resumed teaching in her department at Athena high school. Miss Cameron has recovered from an illness prior to school opening. She will make , her home for the school year at the Fred Pinkerton home, as she did last year. Fred Calef visited his sister, Miss Olive Calef Athena school teacher, last week-end. The visitor was en route to Harvard where he will take up the study of law for three years. Sunday he joined a party motoring to Detroit, Mich., to attend the Na tional American Legion convention. Miss Hanna of the Malen Burnett School of Music, was in the city Wed nesday, when she organized her music class for the fall term of instruction, after the summer vacation. Miss Hanna will be in Athena on Wednes day of each week to instruct class members at high school auditorium. Miss Almira Booth has left for New York City where she will enter Columbia University. Miss Booth who is a talented musician will specialize in the study of grade school music and will work for her master's degree. She has spent the last three years at Dillon, Montana, where she was music supervisor of the schools. For the pleasure of Mrs. Sarah Jane Bowles of Walla Walla who is spending the week visiting her daughter Mrs. F. S. LeGrow, Mrs. M. Watts arranged a contract four some Wednesday afternoon including Mrs. H. I. Watts. The J. T. club will hold the first meeting of the fall season at the home of Mrs. Francis Lieuallen of Adams next Friday afternoon, Sep tember 25 at two o'clock. It is desired that all members will save this date and make an effort to be present as plans for the year will be discussed. Interesting visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. A. Barrett this week were Mr. and Mrs. E. L. Walker of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. They are touring the west visiting relatives and nspecting business interests, leaving here for Tacoma, Tuesday night. Mrs. M. M. Johns and Mr. and Mrs. Walk er were dinner guests Monday night at the ranch home of Mr. and Mrs. J. N. Scott. Tuesday evening a party motoring to Pendleton for dinner and theatre included Mr. and Mrs. Scott, Mr. and Mrs. - H. A. Barrett, Miss Helen Barrett and Mrs. Abby Mays. A group-of Athena young people motored to Milton where' they sere naded Mr. and Mrs. Alton Vaughn, (Esther Berlin) with an old-fashion ed charivari. To halt the din the young couple invited the "intruders" into their home where they generous ly treated the crowd with candy and cigars. Those present were: Marjorie Douglas, Mildred Hansell, Betty Eag er, Mary Tompkins, Mary Berlin, Ar- leen Mynck Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Pittman, Roland Wilson, Wayne Pink erton, Arthur Crowley, Solista Pick ett, "John Kirk, Raymond Murphy, Wendell Shigley. The Athena pinochle club held their first meeting of the season Wednes day evening at the Jess Smith home north-east of Athena with Mrs. Arthur Jenkins and Mrs. Ed Mon tague as hostesses. Four tables were in play and Mrs. Charles Potter and Walt Huffman made high score and Mr. and Mrs. Phillip Remillard re ceived the consolation. Following the play the hostesses served refresh' ments and plans for the year were discussed. Meetings will be held al ternate Tuesday evenings and the next meeting will occur September 29 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Montague with Mrs. Potter and Mrs, Jess Smith as hostesses. McKenzie Chapter 0. E. S. held the first fall meeting Wednesday night at Masonic Hall with a good attend ance. Following the usual business session a social hour was enjoyed un der the title of a "repression party." Bridge was played, Mrs. W. P. Little- john, Mrs. Henry Dell and Joe Scott receiving prizes in keeping with the idea. The hostesses, Mrs. Marion Hansell, Mrs. Frank Little, Mrs. H. I. Watts and Mrs. Gordon Watkins served refreshments at small tables centered with fragrant boquets of fall flowers in bottles and other hum ble receptacles. Lunch cloths and napkins were of unhemmed muslin and supper consisted of "depression bugs ' and "aqua pura." The attractive rooms of the Berry home were decorated with clusters of brilliant hued fall flowers and the dinner table was beautiful with an artistic centerpiece of pink and white asters and tall pink and white tapers. Covers were laid for seven, and places were marked with appropriate cards carrying out the pink and white color scheme. Those present were the bride and groom, Miss Arleen Willaby, Miss Agnes Warner, Mr. and Mrs. Berry and Miss Dickenson. Later the bride and groom ' proceeded to Portland where they will spend a week, return ing to Athena to reside. Mrs. Har den is an attractive girl who is popu lar with a wide circle of friends. She is a member of the well known Dick enson family of Athena and though she has spent much 01 her me nere, she lived a number of years in Phoe nix, Arizona. After being graduated from the Athena high school she at tended the Oregon Normal school at Monmouth for a year and a half, later coming here where she has been employed in the local Pacific Tele phone & Telegraph exchange. Mr. Harden was graduated from Athena high school in 1926 where he made an enviable record as an all , round athlete. He attended the University of Oregon at Eugene where he be came affiliated with the Sigma Nu fraternity. For several years he has been associated in business with his father in Athena. Harden-Dickenson As the culmination of a high school romance Miss Phyllis Dickenson and Wilbur Harden were married at the Pioneer Methodist church parsonage, Walla Walla, at one o'clock, Wednes day afternoon. The ceremony was performed by Reverend Robert E. Smith. The bride was charming in a hunter's green boucle suit with egg shell blouse. Her becoming hat was of green felt and other accessories were in the same shade. . She wore a corsage of pink rosebuds and maid' en hair fern. The couple was attend ed by Miss Edna DeFreece and James Hodgen and Sims Dickenson, the bride's father was also present Miss DeFreece was attractive in a navy blue frock with -white gilet and red girdle. Her hat was a matching beret and she wore a corsage of red rosebuds and fern. Immediately fol lowing the ceremony.
