THE PRESS, ATHENA, OREGON, SEPTEMBER 4, 1931 Press Paragraphs Dave Stone visited Athena friends Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Zeph Lockwood and Mrs. Olive Lieuallen spent the week end at Bingham Springs. Hughie Steele, Solista and Deloe Pickett are employed at the Henry Koepke ranch near Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ely came over from Tacoma and spent the Round Up days with Pendleton friends. Mrs. W. S. Ferguson has returned from Nampa, Idaho, where she visit ed her daughter Mrs. Horace Belnap. Mr. and. Mrs. J. W. Pinkerton spent Tuesday at the home of their daugh ter, Mrs. Maurice Frazier, in Milton. Jack Tweedy who makes his home on the old Conrad place on Pine Creek, was a Sunday visitor in Athe na. Mrs. Frank Little and Mrs. Fred Pittman motored to Walla Walla yesterday, where they attended the fair. Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Pittman and son Donald and Miss Betty Jane Eager spent Sunday on the Umatilla river. Edwin and Ralph McEwen spent Tuesday in Walla Walla. Carl Engdahl, Helix farmer trans acted business here Wednesday. Charles Pinkerton of Weston, trans acted business in Athena, Tuesday. Bryce Baker attended a Conoco meeting in Walla Walla Wednesday night. Mrs. Penn Harris and Mrs. James Cresswell were Pendleton visitors Wednesday. F. R. Clifton who farms on Weston mountain was an Athena visitor yes' terday. Miss Lucille Madden of Portland visited at the A. L. McEwen ranch northwest of Athena this week. Mrs. M. L. Watts left this morn ing for Portland for a visit She plans to go to Seaside before she re turns. Hugh McEwen is attending the Walla Walla Fair where he has en tered a hog and a calf in the 4-H club contest. F. M. Lockwood of Walla Walla, who has land interests in Umatilla county, was an Athena visitors Sat urday. Mr. and Mrs. Eager of Dayton, are expected to spend the week-end at the home of their son, C. M. E. H. Leonard was here from Waitsburg, Wednesday. Will Morrison of Pendleton was in Athena on a business mission Wed nesdav. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Garrett and family are spending their vacation at Wallowa lake. Mr. and Mrs. William Hammer of Walla Walla, were guests this week at the D. A.. Pinkerton' home. Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Curl and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Wood spent last week at the Curl cabin in the moun tains. Miss Billy Wright and Frank Hobenottle of Walla Walla were Sun day guests of Mr. and Mrs. Penn Harris. H. S. Murray and E. C. Lloyd were business visitors here from Milton, luesday. Mrs. Ruth Hull (Ruth Jackson) has been engaged to teach the Holdman school in the Northwest part of the county. Braden Gerking, well known stock man from Ritter was an Athena itor yesterday. He also attended the Round-Up last week. Owing to growing scarcity In water supply, Weston finds it necessary to restrict use of water for lawn sprinkling to one hour each day. Mrs. Alex Malcolm, of Echo, spent the week-end in Athena,' visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ralph Singer. Mr. and Mrs. Everett Rothrock and Mr. and Mrs. Emery Staggs spent the week-end on a camping trip in Baker county. Mrs. Charles. Potter has purchased the Barrett property on the hill in the west part of town, where she will make her home. Mrs. E. C. Rogers and daughter, Helen, returned Monday night from a week's visit with friends and rela tives in St. Johns and Portland. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Hirsch and two daughters motored over from Waitsburg Sunday and visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Justin Har- wood. The Thimble club of Circle 10 Wo men of Woodcraft will meet next Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Mary McKay on Jefferson street. Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Pinkerton moved Wednesday from their ranch home to the Christian Church par sonage where they will spend the winter. A contract foursome enjoying the afternoon at the home of Mrs. H. I Watts included Mrs. F. S. LeGrow, Mrs. Glenn Dudley and Mrs. Ralph McEwen. Miss Jessiedeane Dudley will spend the winter in Walla Walla, where she is employed in the dental office of Dr. Geyer. She took up her duties last Monday. C. E. 0. Montague has received word that his property occupied by a pool room in Roosevelt, Wash., was burned Monday night. It was cover ed by insurance. Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Richards and son Roland were house guests of Mr. and Mrs. 0. 0. Stephens at the home of Mrs. A. A. Kimball m Pendleton during the Round-Up. Mr. and Mrs. Jack West, Mrs. Leonard, Mrs. Margaret Banister and Mrs. Amanda McArthur are at the Leonard summer cottage at Mountain Park, above Waitsburg. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Johnston who have been making their home in the Ike Phillips property on College street, moved Saturday to the Kilgore house, on Jefferson street. Mr. and Mrs. Avery Cornell were here from Walla Walla Tuesday eve ning and were accompanied home by Mrs. L. A. Cornell who will visit the Walla Walla fair this week. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Mitchell who were married recently spent last week visiting relatives at Helix and Athe na and returned to their home on Reed and Hawley mountain Sunday evening. Miss Frederica Kershaw left yester day morning for a short visit in Portland before proceeding to Rose burg next week, where she will re sume her teaching duties in the schools. They report trout fishing good in Wallowa streams. Mrs. D. H. Sanders accompanied her daughter Mrs. Robert Norris, to her home in Medford, Wednesday, the ladies motoring. -Mrs. Sanders will visit for several weeks. .Mr. and Mrs. Emery L. Walker of Wanmatosa, Wisconsin, will arrive here the 14th of this month to visit at the home of H. A. Barrett and to took after property interests. An attractive new Neon electric sign has been placed in one of the show windows at Watkins' Pharmacy. It is of late design, the first to be in stalled in an Athena business house. Mr. and Mrs. George Sheard and Mr. and Mrs. Harve Roseberry re turned Sunday from a pleasure trip to coast points. The menfolk enjoy ed some exciting deep water fishing. Leo Geissel and Jack Miller, who spent a portion of the summer at the Arbogast-Geissel cattle ranch in Grant county, have returned home preparatory to entering school next Tuesday. Curtis Shellenberger, son of Luther Shellenberger of Weston, is one of four Walla Walla musicians who have been selected to play in orchestra on a world cruise of a Dollar line steamship. Mr. and Mrs. Clair Gurney of La Grande spent the week-end at the home of Mrs. Gurney's parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Little john in Athena. The visitors attended the Round-Up Saturday. , Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koepke, Sr., expect to leave their home at Glen dale, California, September 8 for a visit with Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koep ke, Jr. They will make the trip by motor. An institute for teachers of Uma tilla county will convene at Pendleton October 8 and 9. The institute will be for Umatilla county teachers only, Baker, Union and Wallowa counties not being included.' E. C. Rogers left Thursday for Creston, B. C, for a few days visit at the Dudley Rogers ranch. He will be accompanied home by his son, Kenneth, who will attend high school, which opens next Tuesday. Unavoidably the date for beginning the fall term of Mrs. Frederick's piano class has been postponed to Saturday, September 12. On that date pupils will meet as usual for in struction, at the Athena Hotel. Clarence Barney was in an accident Sunday when his car was damaged by a machine driven by a Waitsburg man. Barney's car was rammed in the side and turned over in a ditch. Clarence escaped with a few minor injuries. Judge Bean of the state supreme court, Mrs. Bean and their'son Haw ley Bean of Echo, were Athena visit ors Friday, en route to Walla Walla. Judge Bean and Mrs. Bean returned to their home at Salem, Monday. Miss Mary Cameron who recently underwent an operation is recuper ating at her home in Portland and hopes to be able to return to her duties at the Athena high school within a week after classes open. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. 0. Montague were Milton visitors Sunday. While enjoying refreshments at a fountain there, some unscrupulous person made way with a box of peaches which was in the car, parked on Main street. C. B. Mays of Portland spent the week-end at the Barrett home here. Mr. Mays who is a brother of Mrs. Jennie Barrett was en route to north ern Idaho on a business mission and left here Wednesday morning, making the trip by motor. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Booher had as their guests during Round-Up, Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Vandever of Condon, Mr. and Mrs. Booher and Mr. and Mrs. Vandever spent Thursday and Friday in Walla Walla, attending the Round-Up in Pendleton Satur day. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Tubbs and family who have recently returned from a motor trip to Crater Lake, left yesterday morning for Portland. Mr. Tubbs will attend an Insurance convention and his daughter will re sume her studies at &t. neien s nan. Mr. and Mrs. J. V. Milligan return ed home Monday from a vacation trip to Ronan Lake, Montana. They were accompanied on the trip by Mr. Mil ligan's father and sister who reside at Waitsburg. The members of the party enjoyed splendid rainbow fish ing in Ronan Lake. Miss Dorothy Berlin who has been attending summer school at the Uni versity of Washington arrived Sun day for the wedding of her sister, Esther. She is spending the week with her mother and will leave Sun day for Cle Ellum, Washington, where she will teach this year. Mr. and Mrs. V. E. Graham and two daughters of Tacoma, visited at the Gordon Watkins home in Atheva, Friday and Saturday. Mr. Graham, who is a brother of Mrs. Watkins, is an employee in the post office at Ta coma. They left by motor for their home, Saturday afternoon. Miss Iris Little, who spent last week in Athena visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Little, left for Walla Walla Sunday to re sume her duties as society editor of the Walla Walla Bulletin. Miss Lit tle and her mother returned from a motor trip to Portland last week. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pittman were hosts at dinner Sunday when a group of relatives from Reed and Hawley mountains were their guests. Those present were Mr. and Mrs. Lee Craigen and daughter Barbara Bell, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Mitchell, Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mitchell, and Lloyd and Frederica Mitchell and Charley Rose. Mi, and Mrs. Wilburn Kayser, re cently married were the recipients of a noisy reception Wednesday evening which took the form of an old fash ioned charivari. About fifty friends of the young couple arrived at their residence en masse and a serenade "of sorts" followed. After the uninvited guests had exhausted themselves with noise and pranks they were bid den to enter the home and were generously "treated" by the host. Mrs. C. E. Crane (Lenore McNair) of Ellensburg, Washington, and her aunt Mrs. O. C. Taylor of Seattle, arrived in Athena Saturday to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Lew Mc Nair. Sunday Mrs. McNair and the visitors motored to Payette, Idaho, where they arranged a dinner in honor of the fiftieth wedding an niversary of Mr. and Mrs. S. N. Ad kins parents of Mrs. McNair and Mrs. Taylor. The gathering was a family reunion and the honorees were the recipients of many good wishes.
