Mr. and Mrs. Alf Johnson came over from Walla Walla Sunday and spent the day at the Al Johnson home in Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Lee Mitchell, who were married last week, are spending the week at the home of Will Potts near Athena. State tax appraiser Larrabee for the Eastern Oregon district was a business visitor here from Pendleton Tuesday. Mrs. Henry Dell spent last week end in Walla Walla yisiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Armand De Merritt. Will and Ad Pinkerton who made a search for huckleberries with lit tle success last week made a return trip this week. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Jones will at tend the rural mail carrier's picnic, an annual affair, at Emigrant Springs, Sunday. Highway traffic is appreciably on the increase due to the Round-Up, but it does not compare with the volume of former years. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koepke, Jr., and Henry III have returned to their home near Athena after a motor trip to Seattle and Seaside. The First National Bank of Athe na win De closed baturaay on ac count of the Round-Up and stores and business houses will close. In company with Herman Hoffman, Wm. McLeod took a pleasure ride in the Blue Mountains Sunday, travers ing the scenic Skyline road. Alistair Meldrum will leave for Payette, Idaho, the last of the week He has spent the summer in Athena and his home is at Spokane. Louise Ringel spent Wednesday vis iting at the home of Mrs. L. R. Gil liland of Weston. She attended the Round-Up yesterday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. M. I. Miller and two sons are visiting relatives in Seattle this week. They spent several days in Spokane before going to Seattle. Mrs. Charles Potter has disposed of her cattle to Harry Nulph of Uma Dine. The herd was moved to the farm of the new owner yesterday. Mrs. M. L. Watts and Mrs. M. ML Johns motored to Walla Walla Wed nesday where they saw Marie Dress ier and Polly Moran in "Politics." Mrs. W. S. Ferguson is spending the week at Nampa where she is vis iting her daughter, Mrs. Horace Bel nap. Mrs. Ferguson left here last Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Dudley have returned from a two weeks outing at Seaside where they were the guests of Dr. and Mrs. Arthur Van Dusen of Astoria. Clarence Hand has gone to Bonners Ferry to work in harvest. He ac companied" Charles Kirk, who left Athena last week for his home at Creston. B. C. Mr. and Mrs. C. E. O. Montague ana Clarence and Melba Montague motor ed to Arlington last Saturday night, proceeding to Roosevelt where they spent Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Joyce of Skyko mish will arrive Sunday to visit at the home of Mrs. Joyce's sister, Mrs. E. C. Prestbye. The visitors will re main until Tuesday. All school children of grammar age were admitted free to the Round Up yesterday. Disabled veterans from the hospital at Walla Walla, were also admitted free. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Warren of El lensburg and Mr. and Mrs. G. W Warren of Connell. Wash., were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Stanton, Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Watt of Day ton were Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Cornell in Athena. Mr. Watt is an instructor in the high school at Dayton. Miss Elsa Ringel is in Pendleton this week, where she is in charge of the culinary department for the ladies of the Episcopal church, in serving meals for. Round-Up visitors. William and Ad Pinkerton return ed Saturday from a huckleberry pil grimage to the Frazier ranch in the Blue Mountains. They found plenty of walking but few berries. Arthur Stone, one of the editors of the Salem Capital Journal, former Athena boy, was in the city for a short time Tuesday. He will return to Salem after the Round-Up. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph N. Scott and son Jay, made a trip last week to Corvaliis, where they had business. While in Portland they visited Mrs. Retta Potts and Miss Myrtle. Miss Frederics Kershaw arrived home Tuesday night from Ontario,, where she left her grandmother, Mrs. Barbara Willaby about the same. Mrs. Kershaw will return Sunday. Mrs. A. W. Logsdon enjoyed a vis it Sunday with her mother Mrs. Hardy Mansfield of Pendleton. Mrs. Mansfield who formerly made her home in Athena spent the day here. Wm. Winship, Mr. and Mrs. P. E. Clayton, (Mildred Winship) Miss Audrey Winship and Mrs. James Ha worth, were in the city yesterday from Salem, visiting relatives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Granville Cannon, Charles Williams, Miss Edna Zerba, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Williams and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beckner spent last Sunday picnicking on the Uma tilla river. A party picking huckleberries at Salmon river recently included, Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Tucker, Mr. and Mrs. A. O. Schubert, Mrs. Ralph Tucker, Miss Itol Schubert and Mrs. J. F. Snider of Weston. Mrs. William Gordon and daughters have been visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Zerba. Their home is in Vancouver, Washington, where her husband is a United States army senior captain. Mrs. E. C. Rogers and daughter Helen are in Portland, where they are visiting at the home of Dr. and Mrs. F. D. Watts, former residents of Athena and Weston. Mrs. Rogers and Mrs. Watts are sisters. Mr. and Mrs. John V. Milligan are enjoying a weeks outing at Lake Ronan in Montana ' and at Glacier National Park. They were joined by relatives at Waitsburg who accom panied them on the trip. Mr. and Mrs. William McPherson and Mr. and Mrs. John Standage spent the week-end at Spout Springs, in the Blue Mountains. The men folk were moderately successful in a grouse hunting expedition. Miss Mildred Watkms, who spent a portion of the summer at the home of her brother, Gordon Watkins in Athe na, has left for Centralis, Wash., where she resumed teaching in the public schools of that city. Announcement is made of the birth of a son to Mr. and Mrs. Will B. Campbell at Walla Walla, August 22. The youngster has been named Wil liam Casimer and he tilts the scales at six pounds, three ounces. Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Anderson of Portland will arrive tonight to spend the week-end at the M. L. Watts home here. The visitors are especial ly attracted to this part of the coun try by the Round-Up at Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Jack West are visit ing at'the home of Mrs. George Ban ister here. Mr. West is able to be about on crutches following an acci dent suffered in railroad camp in northern California where he was employed, o Charles Williams accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Fred Backner and children on a huckleberrying trip in the Lang don Lake country. Mr. and Mrs. Beckner came down from Washtucna, Wash., on their first visit here in sev eral months. ' Mr. and Mrs. Beryl Hodgen will re turn to The Dalles after the Round Up, having remained in the Athena Adams neighborhood during the sum mer. Beryl will be coach and athletic director at The Dalles high school again this year. Henry Hill left Athena yesterday on a motor trip to Newport. Mr. Hill contemplates driving by way of Eu gene and will go north after leaving Newport, to Seaside and Astoria. He contemplates meeting J. W. Smith of Helix at Newport. Wayne Pinkerton, employe of Rog ers & Goodman, attended the Atwa ter Kent radio convention at Walla Walla, Wednesday. At the meeting the latest models of Atwater Kent re ceiving sets were on display, and they attracted a great deal of attention. The Misses Helen Barrett, Arleen Myrick, Dorothy Burke and Marjorie Montague, Athena riders in the cow girl greeters' troop have been in Pen dleton daily this week, participating in the activities of the troop, which numbers between 75 and 100 riders Mr. and Mrs. Dick Swift arrived home Tuesday after a three week's visit at Vancouver. B. C. They made the trip by motor and during their absence attended the. races. Mrs, Swift's brother has a string of horses which he is now racing at Victoria, Miss Hilda Dickenson, chief oper ator of the Pacific Telephone & Tele sraph company at Arlington recent ly visited relatives here while taking her summer vacation. Miss Dicken son also spent a week with her grand father T. P. DeFreece near College Place. The 19th birthday anniversary of Miss Mary Tompkins was observed Tuesday, when she was hostess to u dinner party. A splendid birthday cake centered the table. Invited guests were Miss Marjorie Douglas, Mrs. Ralph Singer and Mrs. Willard Crabill. The September meeting of the Missionary society of the Christian church will be held next Monday af ternoon, August 31, instead of Wed nesday of next week, at the home or Mrs. M. M. Johns. This is to permit the attendance of Mrs. Sias, who is leaving on Wednesday. Mrs. O. M. Castleman is here from Ontario, visiting at the Kershaw home. Mrs. Castleman will remain un til after the Round-Up, spending a part of the time in Pendleton with her daughter, Miss Barbara Castleman, who is one of the four attendants of tbe queen of the Round-Up. Mr. and Mrs. M. L. watts returned the latter part of last week from Portland, where they spent several days. Their daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. F. C. He may return there later to wor.k temporarily. Johnny Robinson and his Varsity Vagabond orchestra furnish music for Happy Canyon this year. Several years ago Johnny and his orchestra appeared in a musical program at the Standard Theatre and played for several dances in the old hall, since torn down and utilized in construc tion of cabins at Booth's auto camp near City Park. In honor of Wayne Pittman's birth day, Wednesday, Mrs. Pittman ar ranged a picnic party at Umatilla river and Bingham Springs. Guests were Betty Jane Eager. Arthur Crowley and Donald Pittman. Other members of the Pittman family who celebrate the same date as their natal day are Mrs. Tom Kirk, (Levone Pittman) and Mrs. Fred Pittman. The members, of the Christian church are giving a reception in the church basement next Tuesday eve ning, in honor of Rev. and Mrs. C. A. Sias. The community in general is invited to meet and wish this worthv couple success in their new field of labor in the Boys' Home at Turner. an institution that is maintained by the church. It is conceded that their place in Athena will be hard to fill and many are expressing keen regret at their departure.
