Weston was an Athena visitor Wednesday. . Mrs. Fred Pittman and son George spent Wednesday near Milton. ' Ralph Kinnear, prominent Milton farmer was in Athena yesterday. ' Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kershaw were Milton visitors Tuesday evening. Reports from harvesting in the He lix section indicate a good yield. Miss Glea Sias spent a portion of the week with friends at Hermiston. Mrs. Charles Downing was in Athe na from her home near Freewater, Tuesday. Mrs. A. B. McEwen and Mrs. H. A. Barrett visited relatives in Helix Tuesday. Frank Greer came over the hill from Weston yesterday on a business mission. M. I. Miller has returned to Athe na after being employed in harvest operations. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Swift left early this morning for a motor trip to Ca nadian points. Mrs. Lowell Harder of La Grande is visiting at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Will Kirk. Joe and Charle3 Payne are busy hauling 16 inch wood from the moun tain wood lot. For Sale Mrs. C. H. Potter has eight good brood sows for sale. Phone 26F13, Athena. - Charles DuPuis, foreman for L. L. Rogers, was in Athena for machine parts Wednesday. Bob Bond, David Hamley and Bob Burroughs of Pendleton called on Athena friends Monday. Melba Montague is spending the week with Betty Geiss at the Geiss farm home south of Athena. Miss Lillian Wright of Walla Wal la, was a week-end guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Penn Harris. Hughie Steel and Edwin Gevin who have finished harvesting here, plan to leave Athena in the near future. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Coppock were Sunday visitors of Mr. and Mrs, Thomas Ferral, at Walla Walla. Rev. and Mrs. C. A. Duringtheir vis it to the beach, the cat strayed from home. S. Roy Gevin, special agent for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co., was here from Pendleton Wed nesday. Enjoyable evenings during the hot weather have been spent at the Thorn Hollow swimming hole on the Uma tilla river. Mr. and Mrs. A. Collins of, Fort Scott, Kansas, were in Athena, Mon day, visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Smith. There will be a business meeting of the Athena Golf club at the office of B. B. Richards, this (Friday) eve ning, at 8 o'clock. Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Cornell and Mr. and Mrs. A. H. Cornell visited the Roy Hess summer home near Cold Springs, Sunday. The Henry Koepke harvesting out fit has finisHed the work at Helix and has moved to the Koepke farm south of Athena. Miss Doris Lieuallen of Adams, who has been attending summer school at University of Washington, has returned home. Mrs. C. M. Eairer and daughters Betty Jane and Virginia arrived home Sundav moraine after a vacation of several weeks at Seaside. Simon Deaxdorff has returned to his home here after several weeks employment in the berry fields on the mountains east of Weston. Miss Edna DeFreece returned- to Athena Friday evening from Port land, where she visited several days with relatives and friends. Mrs. Gordon Meicer of Pendleton spent' the past week here, visiting her husband who drives the gasoline truck for the Shell Oil company. Mrs. Otis Whiteman and Mrs. John Shaw of Walla Walla spent Sunday at the home of Mrs. wnitemans sis ter, Mrs. B. B. Richards in Athena. Walter Hamon who finished har vesting with the Lila Kirk crew Wed nesday, left for Idaho where he will be employed in harvesting operations. A series of wheat tires have Deen the lot of a number of farmers in the vininitv of Walla Walla. The fires are believed not to be of incendiary origin. J. A. Bagwell of Hollywood, Cali fornia, has been at Helix recently. Mr. Rao-well formerly resided on a ranch near Helix, where he still has land in terests. Mr. and Mrs. Victor McDonald of Lone- Beach. LeGrow made up a contract foursome playing at the LeGrow home Tuesday afternoon. Carpenters are replacing canvas with a Drotection of boards above the doorwav at Radtke's store. Logan Fernger, wen Known 10 Adams and Athena residents recently met with a serious accident in which his right arm was fractured, when he fell from a ladder at his home in tin ton. New York. Miss Ellen Henry is visiting at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs Charles Henry. Lisle Gray and Oral Michener have been heipirrsr him with lui work. ' Miss Viola DeLong of Medford, who was a guest at the J. F. Ker shaw home, left Wednesday for the home of her father at Wallula. Miss DeLong is a sister of Mabel Strick land, famous rodeo performer. 4 Very pleasant fellowship and ser vices were had last Sunday morning, when the Baptist congregation vis ited the Christian church, and in the evening when by invitation, minister Sias preached in the Baptist church. Mrs. Gordon Watkins returned home Saturday morning after several weeks visit on the Sound. She was accom panied here by Miss Mildred Watkins who has been attending summer school at the University of Washing ton. . Mary Lou Hansell met with a pain ful accident Tuesday afternoon, when climbing into a barn window while at play she ran a large splinter into her chest. She was hurried to Dr. Mc Kinney who used a local anaesthetic while removing the splinter. Albert McLouth and Henry Barrett spent Sunday and Monday at the Ed Burtch ranch on Spring Gulch, south west of Wallula. They witnessed the grass fire in that vicinity which burn ed over a large area of the George Lomden sheep range on the high ground south of Wallula. "Fritz," Kenneth Rogers' dog pal, was found dead in the south part of town one morning of last week. The dog was especially fond of children and was a general favorite and play fellow with them. He was well broken to harness and in winter pulled a sled over the snow at a rapid pace. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Knowlton of Spokane who have been visiting at the home of Mrs. Metz in Weston vis ited at the Fred Kershaw home here Friday. They have left for their home in Spokane accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Knowlton who have spent the past three months in Weston. Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Nelson who have been visitors at the D. A. Pinkerton home, left Wednesday for La Crosse, where they have farming interests. Mr. and Mrs. Nelson have recently returned from a trip to, Montana and Canada and were accompanied by their daughter and husband, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Allen, of Spokane. A birthday party which occurred Sunday at Adams was in honor of June Thompson" and Mary Jane Hod gen at the Hodgen home. Beside the honor guests those present were Miss Free, Nadyne Golson, Margaret and Ann Thompson, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hodgen and Dona, Gilbert and Phillip Hodgen and Mr. and Mrs. Newt Hodgen of La Grande. The Kill Rare Pinochle Club met Wednesday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Dick Swift, three tables be ing in play. Those present included, Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Roseberry, Mr. and Mrs. M. I. Miller, Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Lowe, Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Cornell, Bert Swift, Edgar Copenhaver and Laurence Copenhaver and the hosts. Mrs. Cornell and Mr. Swift won high score and Mrs. Swift and Mrs. Miller received the consolation. Door prizes went to Mrs. Swift and Edgar Copen haver. Refreshments were served following the play. H. H. Eickhoff and family passed through Athena Monday en route from Walla Walla to their home in Indiana, by motor. Mr. and Mrs, Eickhoff and children have been resi dents of Walla Walla for the two years, during which time Mr. Eick hoff experimented with bean raising here and in Walla Walla counties for the Eickhoff Farm Products corporation. Emery and Kenneth Rogers who have been working in harvest here will leave soon for Creston, B. Emery drove caterpillar for Laurence Pinkerton and Kenneth operated the grain ele vator on the ranch of Mrs. Carrie Rogers during the present harvest season. An interesting meeting of the W. C. T. U. occurred Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. E. B. Foster, Mrs. Clarence Tubbs was program leader and a number of clippings of current interest were read and dis cussed. ' Miss Betty Tubbs played two violin numbers, "Menuet in G," Bee thoven, and Cantilene, Devaux." She was accompanied by Miss Arlene Fos ter who latter pleased with a piano solo, "Love Dreams" by Brown. A piano duet, "Stars of the Summer Night" by Annabel Payne and Elaine Tubbs, was much enjoyed. Following the program a social hour was en joyed by the members when the host ess served dainty refreshments. In honor of the eleventh birthday of Miss Beverely Barrett, Mrs. Henry Barrett invited a group of the honoree's friends to a lawn party Saturday evening from 6:30 to 9 o'clock. Games of all kinds were en joyed by guests Cold drinks and ices were also served from a table deco rated with diminutive lady dolls dressed in pastel shades. The young honoree was the recipient of a num ber of beautiful and useful gifts. Those present were Melba Montague, Doris Jenkins, Marjorie Martin, Bar bara Huffman, Dorothy Gould, Helen Johns, Mary Lou Hansell, Frances Alkire, Helen Alkire, Iva Mae Booher, Patricia Ann Thomson, Genevieve Barrett, Mrs. Flint Johns, Mrs. Jen nie Barrett, Mrs. A.
