Clarence Hand has purchased a truck and will sell and deliver full growth yellow pine wood, from the forest near Meacham. Miss Martha Murray who is a pupil of Mrs. Glenn Steen of Milton was among the winners at the Eastern Oregon district contest. Mrs. Martin Wright and small children, and Mrs. Thelma Hodgson of Walla Walla were visitors at the Fred Bruce home, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Dick Swift and Mr. and Mrs. Harve Roseberry and Miss Margaret Lee enjoyed a picnic lunch Sunday, west of Pendleton. Carl Sheard was laid off from plow ing several days last week due to the antics of a refractory tooth. He returned to work Tuesday. Charles Pinkerton, field deputy of the county assessor's office, has been in Athena this week, assembling valu ation for the assessment rolls. A group of friends called in the evening to greet the senator, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Tittman will move in a few days to the McArthur place south of town, Wayne will give special attention to chickens and gardening. , Martin Carder is on crutches as a result of an accident which occurred at the Rich Thompson ranch Satur day, when he received a severely mashed foot. Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Franklin and family of State Line and Mrs. Geo. Green and daughter Georgie visited at the Claude Franklin home at Thorn Hollow, Sunday. Otha Reeder is farming his Walla Walla county ranch, formerly oper ated by Clem Duncan. Dick Win ship is plowing 24ff acres of summer- fallow on the place. Miss Marjorie Weber, who is a stu dent at the Eastern Oregon normal school at La Grande, spent the week end at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bruno Weber. Mrs. A. B. Cameron of Portland, spent the week-end with her daughter, Miss Mary Cameron, Athena high school teacher, at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pinkerton. Shannon O'Shea, who is clearing off a ranch southwest of Meacham, and has yellow pine wood for sale in large quantities, was transacting business in Athena yesterday. Miss Delia Bryant and Miss Blanche Thorson motored to La Grande last week-end where they visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rom inger, former Athena residents. Mrs. Huldah McKinney, mother of Mrs. Frank Little has been ill the past week but is reported improving Her granddaughter, Miss Bunnie Mc Kinney of Walla Walla is visiting her. Rev.'W. C. Gilmore, pastor of the Congregational church at Dayton, Washington, accompanied by Mrs. Broughton, Dr. McLaughlin and others visited Athena friends Sun day. E. C. Prestbye, Justin Harwood, Penn Harris and Flint Johns, who will represent Athena in the county tournament on the Pendleton golf links Sunday, played golf on the Pilot Rock course, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Andy Rothrock and Bud Price left Wednesday for John Day, where they will spend a few days. They were accompanied as far as Baker by Mrs. Fred Bruce, who will visit her sister in that city. Mrs. Vista Turner, sister of Mrs. Frank Little, died Tuesday at her home in Kennewick, after a long ill ness. Funeral services were held yes terday at Kennewick and interment will take place at Coeur d' Alene, Ida ho, today. The dandelion growth In Athena lawns is receiving the undivided at tention of a number of home owners, with result that the number of yellow blooms are growing less in the patches that have been attacked with cutting blades and gasoline squirts. F. J. Jackson has gone to Portland to consult a specialist in treatment for his eyes. For some time past, Mr. Jackson has been confronted with failing eyesight and hopes to find re lief through treatment in Portland. Mrs. J. F. Kershaw, accompanied by Mrs. L. A. Cornell, returned home from Ontario Sunday evening. The many friends of Mrs. Barbara Willaby will be pleased to learn that she con tinues to improve, and is able to be up for a time each day. The May meeting of the Christian Missionary society will be held next Tuesday, instead of Wednesday at the home of Mrs. George Gerking. South Africa will be the subject, with information concerning missions there. All interested are invited to attend. The East Oregon Christian mission ary convention will be held in Milton, May 6-7. There will doubtless be a number from this community in at tendance. Mr. Sias, local minister here will give the closing address Thurs day night on "The Faith of Our Fathers." Circle number 10 met for practice at the Knights of Pythias Hall last Fri day night About - fifteen members were present. Following rehearsal the group adjourned to the drug store where ices were served. The Circle will attend a joint meeting at Weston, Friday night, when initiatory work will be a feature of the program. Mr. and Mrs. Laurence Pinkerton were hosts to the B. B. club Friday night. The rooms were prettily deco rated with spring flowers and potted plants. Dinner was served at 6:30 and at bridge which was the diversion of the evening. Mrs. Flint Johns won high score and C. M. Eager received the consolation. The next four meet ings will convene at 7:30. Bridge will be played and light refreshments served following the play. Spring flowers in shades of pink and white were used as decoration at the home of Mrs. Gordon Watkins Thursday of last week when she en tertained the 3 o' 4 bridge club. The usual four tables were in play and Miss Helen Hansell and Mrs. D. A. Lowe were additional guests. High score was won by Mrs. Laurence Pinkerton, Mrs. Lowe receiving an at tractive guest prize and Mrs. A. A. Mclntyre the consolation. This was the last meeting of the club for the season. Seventeen members of the 0. D. O. club were entertained at the home of Mrs. Granville Cannon last Friday af ternoon. A business session was held at which time Mrs. A. W. Logsdon was elected to membership in the club. Miss Lois Smith was a guest of the club. Tha. afternoon was spent socially and at the tea hour the host ess was assisted by Mrs. Lewis Stew are in serving delicious refreshments. The next meeting of the club will be held at the home of Mrs. Lee Craw ford on the afternoon of May 8. Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Buffum visited Athena friends Tuesday. Mrs. Buf fum will be remembered as Miss Mary Jane Cornelison who taught in the Athena high school several years ago. Since her marriage to Mr. Buffum a year and a half ago in California the couple, have traveled extensively. Mr. Buffum is a chemical engineer for a large petroleum company and his work takes him to the far corners of the earth. He and Mrs. Buffum have just returned from the Canary Islands off the coast of Africa, En route home they traveled in Europe visiting many places of interest. The Athena Thimble club met at the home of Mrs. A. M. Johnson Tues day afternoon and worked on quilt block and tea towels. Charity is the object of the organization and ways and means were discussed during the business session.
