Mrs. Theresa Berlin has been ill for some time but is able to be about the home again. S. S. Haworth, who has been in ill health for some time was taken to St. Anthony hospital at Pendleton, Wednesday of this week for treat ment. , " ; M. L.' Watts transacted business in Walla Walla Tuesday. : Mrs. Frank Yenney of Walla Wal la visited her sister, Mrs. Penn Harris Tuesday. Glenn Dudley is still confined to his home suffering with a severe throat infection. Mrs. Lilla Kirk came over from Walla Walla and visited at the home of Mrs. W. McPherson. Mrs. Henry Koepke, Sr., is in a Redlands, California, hospital to re ceive medical treatment. : Mr. and Mrs. C. A. Sias were din ner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs; Charles Betts Friday last. Raymond Kibbey has been out of school for the past two weeks. He has had an attack of intestinal flu. Mr. Chapman of Genessee, Idaho, was a guest last week at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Floyd Pinker ton. J. R. Stott of Wenatchee, was a visitor for several days last week at the home of his sister Mrs. E. 0. Lee. The Circle, Women of Woodcraft, held their monthly meeting Tuesday night. Dow spent a portion of the week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Zerba, west of Athe na. known here was a visitor Wednesday, Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Zerba and Miss Edna Zerba were Pendleton visitors Tuesday. Walter Adams former Athena farm er and well known here, was a busi ness visitor Monday. A. E. Page of Page Machinery Company Walla Walla called on busi ness friends here Wednesday. Mrs. Chase Garfield will leave here in the morning by motor for Lewis ton, Idaho, where she will spend the week-end. Mrs. E. C. Rogers was in receipt this week of a box of fine naval oranges, sent from California by her nephew, Worth Watts. The condition of Mrs. George R. Gerking who has been suffering with an infected eye, continues to improve her friends will be pleased to loam. Miss Hilda Dickenson returned to Arlington, Sunday, where she is chief operator of the Pacific Tele phone & Telegraph company ex change. Penn Harris, Allen Bell, Everett Rothrock, Claire Gurney and Justin Harwood attended the district ' con vention of the American Legion at Milton Tuesday. Carl Mosier, State Adjutant of the American Legion, called on friends here Tuesday. The visitor was en route to Milton to attend the Legion district convention. Mrs. Ralph Singer spent last week at the home of her mother, Mrs. Alex Malcolm, at Echo, returning Sunday. Mrs. Singer who has been ill, is somewhat improved. About fifty guests enjoyed the hos pitality of Mr. and Mrs. Ross Catron, thq occasion being another dancing party. Excellent music was furnish ed and a lunch was served. A contract foursome spending Wed nesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Lloyd Michener Wednesday included Mrs. C. M. Eager, Mrs. Ralph Mc Ewen andl Mrs. Laurence Pinkerton. The Weston Epworth League will present the two-act comedy drama, "Aunt Billie From Texas" at the Weston high school auditorium, to morrow night. There will be song and dance numbers between acts. Last week Mrs. Theresa Berlin picked rosebuds from her garden. The buds were perfect in formation and J were ready to burst forth in bloom when one night, Mr. Jack Frost came by and froze their posie aspirations. L. A. Cornell was a patient in a Walla Walla hospital over the week end, where he was treated for infec tion resulting from the extraction of an ulcerated tooth. He has return ed home and is on duty again at the Red & White store. Mr. Will Hammer, who with Mrs. Hammer, were guests last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Pink erton, was stricken with sudden ill ness while here. However, he recov ered and was considerably better when he left for his home. The Etude Club met Tuesday after noon at the home of Mrs. Gordon Watkins. At a business session it was decided to set the date of the forthcoming concert of the club, for Tuesday evening, April 14. Chorus practice followed and later the host ess served tea. The Pinochle club spent a happy evening at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Jenkins Thursday evening of last week. High scores were awarded to Mrs. C. E. O. Montague and Mr. C. H. Potter and the consolations went to Mrs. Jesse Smith and Mr. Dean Moore. Refreshments were served. A group of friends was informally entertained at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Zeph Lockwood last Saturday night. Cards were enjoyed followed by refreshments. Those enjoying the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Lockwood were Mr. and Mrs. Dean Dudley. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sanders and Mr. and Mrs. Sheldon Taylor. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Hirsch passed through Athena Saturday from Waitsburg to Pendleton where Mrs. Hirsch took the train for Scotland, South Dakota, where her mother, Mrs. Sneider died on Friday. Venard Bell, well known here who has been ill for several months from the effects of ptomaine poisoning was here from Walla Walla Tuesday. His condition is improving. J. N. Banister who has been ill for the past fortnight at his home in Weston was taken to College Place Sunday for treatment. At last re ports the patient was improving. E. H. Lindley, president of the Walla Walla Credit Men's association was a business visitor her Wednes day. Mr. Lindley also transacted business in Pendleton. Sub freezing temperatures follow ing the heavy fog of Tuesday night made the highways in this vicinity a glaze of ice. The grades near Blue Mountain were especially dangerous and several cars left the highway at that point. Cars were slightly dam aged but no one was injured. Miss Wavel Mitchell and Lee Craig' en of Weston Mountain were married at Walla Walla last Thursday. Mrs Craigen is the attractive daughter of Ed Mitchell who farms on Weston Mountain. Mr. Craigen is also farmer and the young people will make their home on his place. The Island of Java was the lesson subject the members of the Athena Study club discussed Friday afternoon when eight members met at the home of Mrs. Theresa Berlin. Papers were given by Mrs. E. C. Rogers and Mrs, Stella Keen. The club will be enter tained at the home of Mrs. Miller, Friday afternoon, February 13. About twenty-five Masons were in attendance at the meeting of the Masters and Wardens Association of the seventeenth Masonic district, held in Masonic Hall, Friday evening. Rep resentatives from Masonic lodges of Pendleton, Helix, Pilot Rock, Weston and . Milton were present. Dolph lodge stood the treats of cake, ice cream and cigars. Ohayata group of Campfire girls will be hostesses at a Valentine "pa jama" party next Tuesday evening at the McEwen home. The Wauna and Bluebird groups and their guardians will be guests. An attractive pro gram of stunts and musical numbers is in preparation and games and re freshments carrying out the Valen tine idea will be features. The O. D. O. Club was entertained at the home of Mrs. Ross Catron last Friday. The afternoon was spent in social needlework and at the tea hour the hostess was assisted by. Mrs. Ethel Montague. Mrs. A. R. Coppock and Mrs. A. W. Logsdon were guests. Plans were made for a party to be given at the home of Mrs. Flint Johns, February 13. Complimenting the husbands of the members. This affair will substitute for the next regular meeting. A group of Adams friends were responsible for a successful mas querade dance last Saturday night. Many attractive and characteristic costumes were donned by the large number of guests, Mr. and Mrs. Dick Swift representing Uncle Sam and Miss America and wearing costumes accenting the national colors were awarded first prize. Bill Remillard and Miss LaFave who impersonated a colored couple also received a prize. Supper was served following the un masking. A group of ladies spent last Fri day afternoon at the home of Mrs. Fred Pittman where they assisted in quilting an attractive quilt belonging to the hostess. Dainty refreshments were served at the tea hour. Those present were Mrs. John Burke, Mrs. Will Harden, Mrs. Charles Henry, Mrs. J. Huggins, Mrs. W. McPherson, Mrs. Schubert, Mrs. E. Tucker, Mrs. Wayne Pittman and son Donald, Mrs. Frank Little, Mrs. John Stanton, Miss Itol Schubert, Mrs. B. Weber and Mrs. Willard Crabill. Flint Johns was complimented with a birthday party Monday night when a group of friends was invited to the Johns home west of Athena. The affair came as a complete surprise to the honoree, who was the recipient of a number of attractive gifts in honor of the occasion. Bridge was the diversion of the evening, Archie Mclntyre making high score. The hostess served supper following the play. The guests were, Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Zerba, Mr. and Mrs. Bert Logsdon, Mr. and Mrs. Archie Mcln tyre. Rev. A. L. Wilson who has been preaching at the Baptist church for the past month left Monday for his home at Hereford accompanied by Mrs. Wilson who had spent the week end here. Rev. Wilson will spend the next month at Helix where he will preach in the Baptist church there. The local church has invited Rev. Hall, of Monmouth, to fill the pulpit here for a time. Rev. Hall, who was formerly a representative of the Bible Association, is known as Captain Hall. For years he had charge of a ship which plied up and down the coast distributing Bibles and otherwise furthering the work of j the organization. Bobbie Hopper was complimented at a real party last Friday, the occa sion being his sixth birthday. Games were played and prizes won by Mary Hale and Patty Mann. Refreshments were served at a long table centered with a wonderful birthday cake deck ed with red candles. Tall tapers in the same shade were used as further decoration and Valentine candies were given as favors.
