Little Miss Alice Dow is a house guest at, the home of Mrs. Alfred Kibbey. ' Mrs. M. M. Johns and Mrs. Flint Johns were Walla Walla visitors Thursday. Mrs. uryce Baker win take a num ber of Athena people to Kennewick today for the Athena-Kennewick foot ball game. Walter Baldwin, Tuck Hodgen and John Pinkerton were among those at tending the game in Portland last Saturday. Sam and Fay Pambrun returned Monday form a successful hunting trip. They visited Herman Geissel in Grant county. Mrs. E. E. Goff of Newburg, who has been ill at the home of her daugh ter Mrs. Ralph McEwen is convalscing satisfactorily. Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Zerba and Mr. and Mrs. Flint Johns formed line party at the "talkies" in Pendle ton Wednesday night. Mrs. S. J. Bowles who has spent the past week at the home of her daughter, Mrs. F. S. LeGrow return ed to her home in Walla Walla Tues day. The W. C. T. U. will meet next Thursday afternoon at the home of Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton on Third street. Mrs. Otho Reeder will be in charge of the program. Mrs. Gordon Watkins and young son Graham have returned to their home in Athena, accompanied by her par ents, Rev. and Mrs. Graham of Lyn don, Washington. Mrs. M. L. Watts and Mrs. Clason Adams are in Portland for several days visit. They are en route to Palo Alto and expect to reach their desti nation Friday night. Mrs. H. A. Street of Weston, preached to the congregation at the Baptist church Sunday morning and evening services were conducted by the B. Y. P. U. members. G. D. Morey who farms on Pine creek suffered a slight stroke early Saturday morning, Mrs. Morey who was at Heppner visiting her daughter was notified and Sunday Mr. Morey was moved to the home of Frank Cop pock near Athena. Goff and Mrs. Ralph McEwen spent yesterday in Waa Walla. Nice assortments of apples, grown in Milton-Freewater orchards are noticed in the Athena market. A number of Athena people have been visitors at the Milton-Freewater apple show, last evening and today. Miss Maybelle Duncan and Mrs. W. McPherson attended a meeting of the Pendleton Women's club, last Thurs day. The Helix Camp Fire Girls held a cooked food sale Saturday, and real ized a substantial sum for their treasury. Mr. and Mrs. Earl Smith returned Wednesday evening from Portland. Mr. Smith is a miller employed at the Preston-Shaffer Mill. A number of Athena families are afflicted with severe colds at the present, but no cases of influenza have yet been reported. John Davison will leave Athena shortly for San Diego, California, where he will spend the winter, re turning here next spring. Mr. and Mrs. A.' J. Garner have been at their ranch in Eagle Valley, Baker county, this week. They drove over in their ' motor car, Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. W. McPherson spent Sunday in Walla Walla as guests of Mrs. Lilla Kirk. Diversions of the day included a sumptuous luncheon, golf and attendance at a show. Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Radtke and Mrs. F. B. Boyd motored to Pendle ton Wednesday evening and heard John McCormack in "Song o' My Heart." "Pete" Mclntyre, popular and well known driver of the Troy laundry truck has been suffering with an in fected hand and has' been in a hos pital for treatment for several days, An international Harvester com party alfalfa chopping machine was exhibited here yesterday. It was demonstrated to the satisfaction of a number of local dairymen and stock raisers. J Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton were in Walla Walla Thursday. Mrs, W. Pinkerton accompanied them to Milton where she spent the day visit ing her daughter, Mrs. Maurice Frazier. Rev. Randle of Cottage Grove, will preach both1 morning and evening Sunday, at the First Baptist church in Athena. ' Church members extend a cordial invitation to all to hear Rev, Randle. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dudley have moved down from their Bingham Springs summer home and will be on the farm for awhile, later in the fall going to Long Beach; California, for the winter.' Mrs. ISunn Moore visited her son Dean, who is confined in a hospital at Walla Walla. Dean, who was operated on last week for appendicitis, is re covering and will soon be able to re turn to his home here. Early Ohio potatoes of superior quality. Mrs. Penn Harris will return Wed nesday from Portland, where she re cently graduated fom a beauty school. Mrs. Harris will open her beauty parlor at the Harris Barber Shop, Saturday morning, November 1 Mrs. B. B. Richards has been at Walla Walla this week, visiting her mother, Mrs. H. H. Hill, who is a patient at the General Hospital in that city. Mrs. Hill is able to be up a part of the time, resting in a wheel chair. ' Mrs. Lisle Gray is interested in securing subscriptions for the wal la Walla Union, during its prize- win ninsr popularity contest, and will greatly appreciate any subscriptions given her by her friends in the com munity. A group of young people were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Wood, Saturday night, when a pot luck supper was a feature of the en tertainment. Each guest had a part the preparation of the feast and like wise participated in the annihila tion thereof. R. Alexander, pioneer Umatilla county merchant, accompanied by his son Roy, was in Athena yes terday from Walla Walla. Mr. Alex ander is residing in Walla Walla temporarily. He Is a well known lodge man, and an Odd Fellow gath ering is not complete without "Alex" being present. Students from Athena at the Uni versity of Oregon this term include Lois Lorene Johnson, sophomore, ma jor in music, member of Gamma Phi Beta; Lenore McNair, sophomore, business administration, Alpha Delta Pi; .Fred A. Radtke, junior, history; Kathleen Mae Radtke, junior English, Alpha Delta Pi. The meeting of the Methodist ladies' society was held at the home of Mrs. Frank Williams Wednesday, twenty-five being in attendance. Vis itors were Mrs. Cornell, Mrs. Lowe, Mrs. Haverland, Mrs. Chas. Betts, Mrs. Kohler Betts and Miss Maybelle Duncan. Mrs. W. O. Read had the lesson "TheCradle of America;" read ing by Mrs. Little, "This ought ye to have done;" playlet, "Why not begin now?" by Mrs. Burke, Mrs. Harden, Mrs. Williams, and Mrs. Hand. Mrs. Lowe joined the society. Mrs. A. R. Coppock and Mrs. Hand served the re freshments. Next meeting will be held at Mrs. Crabilla, November 19th. Kirk, formerly a farmer on the reservation, southwest of Athena, was in the city Saturday from his home at Richland, Washington. Leav ing Athena several years ago, Mr. Kirk went to Saskatchewan, where he engaged in wheat farming. Mrs. Jesse Smith attended the fourth annual reunion of the pioneers of Moro county Saturday. Dinner and supper were served and no form al program was presented, thus giving old friends an opportunity to visit and reminisce. Mrs. Smith returned home Sunday and was accompanied by her mother, Mrs. Emma Patterson i who will visit her for a time. Mrs. George Myrick received word of the death of her father, W. C. At- tebery, Monday at Weiser,. Idaho Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Attebery has visited at the home of his daughter in Athe na in the past and was well known by a number of Athena people. He was 72 years old and death was caused by cancer. He is survived by eight daughters and three sons. Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Metz were guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs, Fred Kershaw Sunday. The couple were recently married in Spokane and will live in Weston where Mr. Metz has a home. The bride, who was Mrs. Eva Long, is well known in Athena, having lived here in former years. With her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Knowlton, she visited here a few weeks ago, from their home in Spokane. Mrs. Ralph McEwen is in receipt of an interesting letter from her cousin, Lieutenant u. ti. boss who is an eye, ear and throat specialist in the navy. Dr. Goss had charge of equipping the new lU.UUU ton cruiser Chester recently completed at the shipyards Camden, New Jersey. It is now on what is known as a "shake down" trip to try out the engines. They touched at Naples, Constanti nople, Athens, ports in the Black Sea and Gibraltar, returning to Chester, Pennsylvania, this week. At a meeting of the Loyal Gleaners Christian church Sunday school class Friday evening, the following officers were elected: Mrs. C. M. Eager, president; Mrs. 0, E. Venable, vice president; Miss May Lockwood, secretary-treasurer. A committee com prising Mrs. Ed Montague, Mrs. Flint Johns and Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton will solicit food for a dinirer to be served delegates, attending the 0. E. S. con vention on the evening of October 29. After an evening of pleasure and a no-hostess lunch, it was decided to hold similar meetings each month.
