Kirk returned home Tuesday evening after a weeks visit in Portland. Virgil Zerba, Jesse Smith, L. R. Tinkerton and V. C. Harris made a business trip to Pendleton Wednes day. Mrs. Maurice Frazier and daughter of Milton and Mrs. Rose of Adams were gusets of Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton, Sunday. The Etude club will meet next Tuesday, September 16th at the home of Mrs. E, B. Foster. Mrs. Clyde Lester, chorus director will be pres ent and all members are urged to at tend. There will be a business meet ing at 2 and chorus practice at 3 o'clock. The annual barbecue was held at the G. R. Gerking farm home Tuesday evening, when about 150 members and friends of the Christian church and Bible school enjoyed the hospi tality of Mr. and Mrs. Gerking. Bar becued lamb, baked beans, salad, sandwiches, pickles, pie and coffee were -served during the evening. The E. B. Foster family were guests at the A. W. Douglas home Sunday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Bond and Mrs. E. J. Burchill of Pendleton, called at the C. M. Eager home Sunday eve ning. ' Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Stone and son Tillman have moved to Walla Walla where they will take up their resi dence. Mr. and Mrs. Izzy Bodeway of Port land, and George Cutler of Hood River, were recent guests at the Leon Miller home. Miss Dorothy Berlin left last Fri day for Roslyo, Washington, where she is engaged as a teacher in the schools of that city. , Mr. and Mrs. Joseph N. Scott and daughter, Mrs. Margaret Luck, left Sunday for Corvallis. Mr. Scott will return home in a lew days. Mr. and Mrs. Dale Mercer of Pen dleton spent Saturday evening and Sunday at the home of his brother, Gordon Mercer and family. John Walker, Miss Jennie Walker and Mr. and Mrs. Cliff Walker re turned Saturday from Bonners Ferry, where they visited Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Booher. Bryce Baker attended the rodeo in Heppner Saturday and left Tuesday for Horse Heaven with Cliff Banister of Holdman, where they will round up horses. . Miss Frederica Kershaw left Tues day for Roscburg, where she will teach music in the schools of that city. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Douelas. Aaron and Marjorie Douglas, spent Sunday at Hermiston, visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Douelas and fnmilv have moved into their Athe na residence on Fifth street, for the school year. Johnson of Adams is teacher this year of the school in District No. 52, west of Athena. The school oncned Tuesday of last week. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jones and Miss Evelyn Grimes were recent guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Lee. They reside at Wenatchee, Wash. Mr. and Mrs. James Nelson will re turn to their home at Long Beach, California, this week, after spending the summer in thia vicinity and in Alberta. Mrs. H. II. Hill was taken to a Walla Walla hospital Sunday by her son Maurice Hill, of Walla Walla. Mrs. Hill has been in poor health for sometime. Miss Agnes Little left Athena last week for Washougal, wasnmgton, where she will teach in the public schools. Miss Little taught m wasn ougal last year. Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Mr. and Mrs. Richard Beamer oi Weston, narents of Mrs. Jesse Gor don, are both ill. Last Friday Mrs. Beamer suffered a slight stroke oi paralysis, but is reported Detter at this writing. Wew. C. S. Treadwell of Colfax, Washington, preached morning and eveninir last Sunday at the local Bap tist church. Rev. Treadwell will de liver the morning sermon there this coming Sunday. Mrs. M. L. Watts entertained Mon day afternoon at a foursome in honor of her daughter Mrs. Clason Adams, Guests were Mrs. R. B. Mcfcwen, Mrs. Glenn Dudley, Mrs. Henry Koepke and the honoree. Fred Blatchford. who has spent the summer with his brother Dr. Blatch ford of this city, and worked in the bean crop, left Monday for his home in Salem. He will resume his studies at Willamette University. Mr. and Mrs. Ross Catron will soon mov to the Taylor place west of Athena, which was recently purchased by Mr. Catron. Mr. and Mrs. Shel don Taylor will move to their farm southwest of town. The house is be ing remodeled and renovated for their resident there. E. C. Rogers transacted business in Pendleton yesterday. ; 1 . Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Roseberry en joyed an automobile trip to Seattle and other points on the Sound. They returned Sunday, Mr. Roseberry tak ing up his duties as foreman of the M. L. Watts ranch north of town. Mrs. Rose Miller came over from Freewater and spent Sunday at the home of her mother, Mrs. Sanchez. Mary Jane Miller, who packed fruit at Freewater for several weeks has re turned home and entered school. Cleve Stanton has returned from the Palouse country, where he oper ated a combine harvester for a sea son of 35 days. Prior to going into the harvest field, Cleve was engaged in repairing harvesting machinery. Mr. and Mrs. Jack West of Butte, Montana, accompanied by Miss Caro lyn Kidder were in Athena, Wednes day, en route to Portland, where they will visit George Banister, uncle of Mrs. West, who is ill in a hospital there. ; Mrs. L. Sherman has left for Cor- bett, Oregon, where she will join her daughter. Miss Maude Sherman, who is teaching in the public school of that city. Mr. and JWrs. Clarence Hand will live in Mrs. Sherman's Athena residence. The B. Y. P. U. meets Sunday eve ning in the Baptist church. The meet ing will be led by Miss Jaunita Craw ford, with the topic "The King's Jewels." A very interesting meeting is in prospect and all young people are invited to attend. Athena friends of Roy Cannon will be glad to learn that he is improv ing somewhat in health. Sunday Mr. and Mrs. Cannon returned to their farm home north of Athena, after re maining for several weeks at the Cass Cannon home in town. Bobby Zerba was host to a party of boys and girls Thursday of last week. Mrs. Zerba and Mrs. Flint Johns took the little folks to the river, where swimming was the event of the af ternoon. Before returning home the children enjoyed a weiner roast, buns, chocolate and cookies. Mr. and Mrs. Jim Nelson are en route home after sev eral months spent among relatives in Montana, Idaho and Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Joyce and little daughter were in Athena the first of the week from 'Skykomish, Wash., visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Prestbye. Mrs. Joyce and Mrs. Prestbye are sisters. Mrs. Prestbye accompanied the visitors to Portland leaving Wednesday. Dr. and Mrs. R. D. Blatchford have entertained recently Rev. and Mrs. Heineck of Okonoean. parents of Mrs. Blatchford; Mr. and Mrs. Joss of Bremerton, and Rod Blatchford of Salem, brother of Mr. Blatchford. Rod Blatchford is a student m the univer sity of Oregon ' medical school in Portland. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pinkerton ar rived home Monday afternoon from a week's Visit with relatives at Nampa, Idaho, and Nyssa, Oregon. At Nyssa thev visited at the home of Nate Pinkerton, who has been away from Athena for many years. Billy was kept busy answering Nate's inquiries about old-time Athena friends. Herbert Parker and Fred Radtke returned Monday from their fishing trip in the Bend country. They fished in the Deschutes river and at Davis and Clear Lakes, and from the latter lake they brought home some beauti ful large trout. Mr. and Mrs. Harry Keller accompanied them on one of the trips they made out from Bend. "Billwilliam" is the name of a promising and bred-in-the-purple pointer pup. He is owned, petted and handled bv Lvsle Gray, who has had considerable experience in training bird dogs. "Billwilham" is just old enough to enter the period of field trainintr. and is fortunate in having a competent tutor in "Peggy," another hunting dog that makes its home witn Mr. Gray. Mrs. H. A. Barrett entertained the Athena bridge club Friday afternoon. Four tables of bridge were at play with the following euests present. Mrs. Henry Koepke, Mrs. Armond De Merritt, Mrs. R. D. Blatchford, Mrs. T.. R. Pinkerton. Mrs. A. A. Mclntyre and Mrs. Clason Adams. Mrs. M. W. Hansell received high club score, Mrs. R. B. The rooms of the Barrett home were made attractive by fall flowers grown in the Barrett garden. The Royal young peoples' class nf the Christian Bible school, assist ed by their teacher, entertained in honor of Jaunita Crawford and Marvin Crawford who are depart in for school, at the Gerking home last Saturday evening. Take one egg white, four tablespoonfuls of mashed cooked prunes, one tablespoonful of sugar, a pinch of salt and cream of tartar. Beat the egg white, adding the cream of tartar, add salt and a few drops of vanilla. The prunes are folded In after they have been put through a rlcer or a sieve, riace in a buttered ramekin, set into hot water and bake until light and brown. Serve with prune Juice or whlpnrd cream.
