Miss Maude Sherman had for a guest this week, Mrs. : Martin Mc Laughlin, of Duncan. , Mrs. Zeltha Mclntyre is a guest this week at the Ralph Cannon camp at Bingham Springs. Mrs. L. A. Cornell visited, in Walla Walla this week at the home of her son and daughter-in-law. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Potter were guests of the Frank Lockwoods at Bingham Springs, Sunday. . Mr. and Mrs. Archie Mclntyre and two little daughters are spending the week at Bingham Springs. Wm. Campbell and family have spent the past week at their summer camp at Bingham Springs. Mrs. Bella McLean is visiting at the home of her son, James McLean, near Washtucna, Washington. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Shick were in Athena Sunday from Walla Walla, visiting relatives and friends. Born, at College Place sanitarium, August 18, 1930, to Mr. and Mrs, Alonzo Liles, of this city, a son. Mrs. Emory Staggs and daughter of Weston, visited at the Jesse Gor don farm home north of Athena, Fri day. The small daughter of Mr. and Mrs Frank Williams has been seriously ill and was a patient at a Walla Walla hospital. Wood Light Yellow Pine wood at $5.50 per cord, accessible for truck hauling. W. M. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Johnston are vis iting Mr. Johnston's parents at Mos cow, Idaho, and are contemplating lo cating in that vicinity. , Joseph N. Scott has gone to Cor vallis to visit his family, after com pleting harvest operations on the ranch west of Athena. - Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kirk and little son left Athena Tuesday for their home near Creston, B. Mr. and Mrs. Nesmith Ankeny of Walla Walla, were in Athena Sun day for a short time. Hiss Margaret Lee, who attended summer school at University of Mon tana, has returned home. Mr. and Mrs. Don Wilks and daugh ter are visitors at Elk, Wash., the home of Mr. Wilk's folks. Fern Carsten returned home from LeCrosse after a month's visit with her sister Mrs. Eva Gould. Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Pinkerton and daughter and Mrs. .Lisle Gray and children were Milton visitors Thursday." Miss Iris Little, society editor of the Walla Walla Bulletin, is spend ing a two-weeks vacation with her parents and sister here. W. M. Harvey of Gibbon, was in town Tuesday. Mr. Harvey has some good yellow pine cord wood which he is putting on the market. Mrs. Mae Walker and daughter Lola of Waitsburg are spending the week with Mrs. Walker's brother, Ralph Singer and family. Dorothy Gould returned to her home in LaCrosse, Wash., after a month's stay in Athena a guest of her grandmother, Mrs. Finch. - Lee Mitchell has taken up his work again with the bean crew and is stay ing at the home of .his aunt, Mrs. Fred Pittman, in Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Douglas and family and Mr. and Mrs. Barney Foster spent Saturday night and Sunday at Bingham Springs. Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Gordon and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Payne and daugh ters left yesterday morning for a week's outing at Wallowa Lake. George Corder, who is again in failing health, left for Walla Walla Wednesday to make his home for awhile with friends in that city. A meeting of the W. C. T. U. will be held next Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. C. A. Sias, and members are requested to attend. Frank Beale, old-time Athena farm er and meat market owner was in town Tuesday for a few hours, hav ing motored over from La Grande. The Forrest Zerba, Flint Johns and Bert Losrsdon families and Miss Edna Zerba spent a pleasant day Sunday at Tollgate in the Blue Mountains. John Johnson of Pasadena, Cali fornia, is in the city, visiting at the home of his uncle, Alvin Johnson. He will remain until after the Round-Up. Mrs. R. A. Duffield and son Curtis left Sunday morning for Portland in company with Miss Evelyn Duffield who has been a visitor at the Duffield home. Mr. Rov Dow of Vancouver, B. C, is in the city; having come here to at tend the funeral of his brother, Rev. II. E. Dow, which occurred Wednes day afternoon. Mrs. Clyde Willaby was over irom Freewater Monday and removed the household furniture from the Will- aby cottage on Jefferson street, which is to be sold next month. Charles Petrie and family called on Athena friends Wednesday. Mr. Petrie spent his vacation at his old home in Touchet He conducts a ser vice station at Monmouth. Melba Montacrue entertained twelve girl friends at her home Tuesday afternoon, in honor of her elaventh birthday. Games and refreshments were diversions of the afternoon. Bill Richards' ponies, "Dutch," "Sam" and Topsy," will be among the equine visitors at the Round-Up next week and are being: properly groom ed and dolled up for the occasion. - Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Pinkerton and daughter, Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton, Bonnie Johnson and Mrs. Lloyd Michener returned Sunday after sev eral days spent at Bingham Springs. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Garfield had as their Euests Tuesday evening, U. S. Congressmen, J. W. Summers and wife who have spent the summer in and near Walla Walla, their former home. Dr. Kettle, a physician of Joseph Wallowa county, was in Athena the fore part of the week. Dr. Kettle is leaving Joseph, where he has been practicing medicine for a period of four years, and is seeking a new la Mrs. Gross and Mrs. Bryce Baker were in Walla Walla Wednesday. Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Lee and family will spend the week-end at Langdon Lake. . ' Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hand are in from the Berlin ranch and will reside in Athena. ' Hughie McEwen returned home yesterday from Portland, where he spent a month visiting relatives. Miss Sadie Pambrun will close her beauty shoppe next Friday afternoon and all day Saturday on account of the Round-Up. Mr. and Mrs. George Sheard left this morning on a vacation trip into the Bend and Medford country. They will also spend some time on the coast. . ; Mr. and Mrs. Jack Rose and two daughters have returned to their home at Northport, Washington, after visiting relatives in this vicinity for several days. Miss Mildred Watkms will leave the forepart of -next week for Spo kane to visit relatives before pro ceeding on to Centralia, to teach in the public schools there. ' Mr. and Mrs. Orel McPhernn are visiting relatives in Spokane this week. George Weatlierly is driving the delivery car and working in Orel's place at the Athena service station. Mrs. Barbara Willaby left by train Wednesday morning for Ontario, Ore gon, where she will visit her daugh ter. Mrs." 0. M. Castleman. Mrs. Willaby is convalescing after a ling ering illness. Mrs. Lew McNair, who returned several days ago from St. Mary's hospital at Walla Walla, where she underwent a major surgical opera tion, is convalescing satisfactorily at her home m Athena. Sunerintendent and Mrs. Edward Bloom have taken up their residence in the home of Mrs. Lila Kirk. Mrs. Kirk and son John are moving to Walla walla where John win enter Whitman college -this fall. Mrs. L. A. Cornell has returned to her home in Athena from Walla Wal la, where she spent several days at the home of her son, A. a. Uorneli. She was accompanied home by her grandson, Clayton Cornell. Billv Pinkerton has placed ol' "Blue" under Elmer Stockstill's care at the Athena Garacre. where she will be equipped with diamond rings and other mechanical jfurbelows; if Buly knows what these may be. Earl Smith a miller of Preston Schaffer Milling company left Tues day morning for Salt Lake city to act as miller in the company mill in that city. Earl .Martin is acting temporarily as miller in Mr. Smith's place. Ed Montague of the Red & White Store, left Sunday for Eugene where he visited with relatives during the week. He will be accompanied home bv his son Clarence, who has been in the Willamette Valley all of this sum mer, since school closed. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Stewart and little sons spent Saturday and Sun day with relatives in Baker. They were accompanied home from Baker by Mr. and Mrs. Harry Herr and two sons of Portland. Mr. Herr is a brother of Mrs. Stewart. Miss Dena Lieuallen has been en tertaining Miss Dorothy Thomas of Portland, at her Adams home this week. Both Miss Lieuallen and Miss Thomas will be University of Oregon seniors this year, and Miss Thomas is assistant editor of the Oregana. 'Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Stockstill are home from a visit to relatives at Riitte. Montana. They are showing some fine kodak pictures of the mines and smelters at Butte and Annronda. Thev scent some time at the home of Mrs. Stockstill's mother at Boulder. H Mr. and Mrs. Homer Watts are at Wallowa Lake. On the return of Don Wilks, to take Bert Logsdon's place in the meat market, Mr. and Mm. Locsdon will ioin Mr. and Mrs. Watts at the lake. The men folks have a hi-yu fishing trip planned and Bert is rarin' to go. MAhel Strickland, famous rodeo nerformer and ex-aueen of the Pen dleton Round-Up, is being entertain ed this week at the farm home of Mr. and Mrs. L..R. McEwen, north of Athena. Mrs. Strickland will ride the George Drumheller string of relay horses at the Round-Up next week. Bryce Baker is engaged in as .omMincp ativk for the Hanoy Canyon show at the Pendleton Round-Up. He has a trailer equipped to transport horses over the highway, and Monday he took down a trick mule that will do its firecracker stunt for the en tertainment of Happy Canyon crowds. Mr. and Mrs. S. Dodson of Con don, visited Monday and Tuesday at the Wm. McPherson home, while en route home from a trip through Ida ho. Mrs. Dodson is an aunt oi rar. McPherson. Mr. and Mrs. Dodson will continue on to California to spend the winter months after a short stay at their farm near Condon. A card received from Miss Beatrice Hiteman says the family are nicely situated in the town of Cloverdale, which is nestled in the Coast Range mountains, near enough to the coast to enjoy the sea foods. . ..- i Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Forrest were in town Tuesday from their Thorn Hollow ranch. Ed is harvesting a 300 acre wheat crop on the south side of the Umatilla river that is averag ing better than 50 Tbushels per acre. He has about 90 acres yet to harvest and was in town for repairs for his machine. Mr. and Mrs. Clason Adams of Palo Alta, California, are in the city visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Watts, parents of Mrs. Adams. Mr. and Mrs. Adams came by automo bile traveling over the famous Red wood Highway. They also stopped at Crater Lake and were delighted with the route selected. Mrs. W. S. Ferguson was hostess to the Athena Bridge club last Friday evening, when four tables of bridge were at play. Mrs. Sarah Bowles of Walla Walla, Mrs. J. S. Scott of Los Angeles and Mrs. J. C. Harwood were guests. Mrs. Harwood received guest prize and Mrs. E. C. Prestbye high club score and Mrs. W. P. Little john consolation. Mrs. Kennedy of Kenoshe, Wiscon sin, has been a guest at the F. B. Radtke home for several days. Mrs. Kennedy is an old friend of Mr. and Mrs. Radtke; when they resided in Wisconsin, before coming to Oregon. Tuesday Mr. and Mrs. Radtke ac companied Mrs. Kennedy to Lewiston, Idaho, where she will visit friends, returning to Athena this week. The birthday anniversaries of Fred Pittman, his son Wayne and his daughter, Mrs. Tom Kirk falling on the same day of the month, a splendid dinner was served Sunday at the Pitt man home in honor of the . event. Guests were Mrs. Nellie St. Dennis and children, Ronan and Arlee, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Payant and sons Junior and Lester, of Weston; Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Pittman and son Donald, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kirk and son Billy, and Mr. and Mrs: Fred Pittman.
