The condition of Mrs. Lew McNair,
who was operated on last week in a
Walla Walla hospital is improving
favorably, according to reports re
ceived from the hospital. r
Mrs. C. M. Eager and daughter,
Virginia left Tuesday evening for
Portland where they will consult Dr.
Blair at a medical clinic, where Vir
ginia will be fitted with a new foot
brace.
Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Elder depart
ed Friday morning for Cascade, Ida
ho, to remain the rest of the summer,
after two weeks spent at the L. R.
Pinkerton home. Mr. and Mrs. Elder
will enjoy a few days fishing in the
Salmon river, enroute.

Mrs. W. S. Ferguson arrived home
Tuesday evening from Nampa, Idaho,
where she spent a week visiting her
daughter Mrs. Horace Belknap and
family.
There was a good attendance at the
union services in the Christian church
Sunday night. The meeting will be
in the Baptist church next Sunday
evening, when Mr. Sias will speak,
Visitors last week at the Gholson
home, were Mrs. Fanny Proudfoot
and daughters, - ol Yakima. Mrs
Proudfoot was formerly Fanny Ghol
son, and is a niece of W. J. Gholson
Mrs. M. L. Watts had as her house
guests Tuesday, her sister-in-law,
Mrs. W. F. Anderson and Mrs,
Wagonblast of Portland and niece,
Mrs. F. M. Anderson and children of
Walla Walla.
Leo Geissel and Jack Miller are
on the Arbogast-Geissel stock ranch
in Grant county, where they will re
main until school starts. The boys
are having a fine time, with plenty
of horseback riding. '
Guests at the Sias home this week
are Mr. and Mrs. Montague Aspen
wall, of Salem, who are en route
Saskatchewan. Mr. Sias and Mr.
Aspenwall are cousins and have not
met before m over thirty years.
Mrs. James Huggins of Athena
and Mrs. Lela - Vaughn and . two
daughters of Pendleton, spent last
week at Toppenish, Washington,
where they visited Win Burden,
brother of Mrs. Huggins. They made
the trip by automobile.
Miss Agnes Little, teacher in the
Washugal, Wash., high school, is at
the home of her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Little, on Fifth street,
for the remainder of the summer,
Miss Little attended summer school
at University of Oregon.
The B. Y. P. U. cordially invites
the young people of Athena to attend
its meetings, held every bunday eve
ning at the Baptist church. The ser
vice begins promptly at 7 o clock, and
all will find interesting and worth
while programs are presented.
Rev. Dow and family entertained
Dr. and Mrs. Kempton and Rev. and
Mrs. McArthur of Pasadena, Can
fornia, Monday night.- Dr. Kempton
was formerly pastor of the White
Temple at Walla Walla. The party
left Tuesday morning for Edmonton,
Alberta.
Pattie Cunningham, the youngest
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cun
ningham of Pendleton was run over
by n car in the streets of Pendleton
last Thursday. It was necessary to
take the little one to the hospital
where she was- attended and is now
convalescing at her home.
Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Eager and
daughter, Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Gar
field and daughters and Mr. and Mrs.
Lloyd Michener were guests at the L.
R. Pinkerton home Sunday where n
pot luck picnic lunch was spread on
the lawn. The afternoon was spent
in games and social chat.
Bryce Baker met up with an ag
gravating accident Monday, when the
front axle on his oil truck broke.
Bryce was forceJ to make delivery
of gas to harvest outfits out of drums
carted behind his automobile in a
trailer. Taking no chance of having
his gas tank tapped by thieves, he
employed George Pittman to guard it

' Mr.' and Mrs. 0. L. Litsinger and
two children are here from their home
in Los Angeles, visiting Mr. and Mrs.
Bryce Baker. Mrs. Litsinger is a
sister of Mr. Baker. Mr. Litsinger is
employed in the Southern Pacific of
fices in Los Angeles and, is on his
summer vacation. They will visit
relatives at Eugene and Olympia,
Wash., before returning home.
, Clair, Loie and Mtanta Montgomery
left Tuesday morning for California
by automobile. Loie is to enter San
Francisco State Teachers college ana
Clair and Monta will return to Clover
dale, Oregon, after a short visit with
relatives in California. Mr. and Mrs.
Hiteman, Beatrice and Esma Hite-
man contemplate leaving for Clover
dale next Tuesday, where Mr.. Hite
man will be principal in the schools
of that city. '
Mr. and Mrs. K. A. Duffield have
as their house guests this week Mrs.
F. A. Rohde and daughter Mrs. Earl
Massa, mother and sister respectively,
of Mrs. Duffield, and Mrs. Geo. Massa
of Amity, Oregon, also another sis
ter Mrs. C. A. Kahle or Opheim,
Montana, and Miss Evalyn Duffield of
Portland, arrived Wednesday evening
to remain ten days with her uncle and
family. The Massas spent Tuesday
and Wednesday at Lewiston, Idaho,
returning to the Duffield home Thurs
day to spend the remainder 01 tae
week.

A son was born August 5 to Mr.
and Mrs. Verlen Haverland of Milton.
The youngster tipped the scales at 9
pounds.
Miss Emma Thoeny, who has been
attending summer school, is visiting
at the home of her sister, Mrs
Everett Rothrock.
Mrs. Zeltha Mclntyre has returned
from her farm in Sherman county,
where she spent several weeks, look
ing after her interests there.
Tom DeFreece is here from his
home near .Walla Walla, and will
spend some time at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. Sims Dickenson.
Mrs. Alick Johnson has returned
from the hospital at Walla Walla, to
her farm home northeast of Athena,
and is recovering from her recent ill
ness. . . - -
Mr. and Mrs. George Banister are
m Portland, where Mr. Banister will
receive treatment for stomache trou
ble, with which he has been afflicted
for some time.
Chester Cartwright and nephew of
Seattle, were visitors Tuesday at the
C. M. Eager home. Mr. Cartwright
and Mr. Eager were school mates in
Dayton, Wash.
Lightning put one of the motors
in the Preston-Shaffer flour mill out
of commission and the plant was
forced to close down until repairs
could be made.
Miss Lenore McNair spent Monday
night with her mother, who is in a
hospital at Walla Walla, Mrs. Mc
Nair is recovering from her illness
nicely, so it is reported.
Kilgore's Cafe is installing Shell-
ane, a gas product of the Shell Oil
company. Mr. Kilgore will do all
Us cooking hereafter on a gas range
instead of the coal range.
Charles Williams and daughter
Ruth have returned home from the
Beckner ranch near Washtucna. They
have had as guest3, Mr. and Mrs.
George Williams of Tacoma.
Mr. Gerald Clay of Prosser, Wash.,
was a week-end guest at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kershaw. Mr
Clay will be coach at the Snoqualmie
high school for the coming year.
Mr. and Mrs. J. Hennley and small
child have moved here and are re
siding in the Methodist . parsonage.
Mr. Hennley is employed by the
Preston-Shaffer Milling company.
Gordon Mercer, manager for the
Shell Oil company at the Athena
plant, is a new Athena Press sub
scriber. Mr. Mercer and family re
side in the Taylor cottage at Main
and Fifth Btreets.
Robert Lee, who has been employ
ed in the bean cultivating crew is
taking a short vacation, since finish
ing work. He is at the home of his
sister, Mrs. Edgar Spencer, at Pa-
louse, Washington.
Frances and Granville Cannon will
go to Lexington, Morrow county, on
a visit. Their mother, who was call
ed to Lexington on account of illness
of her brother, Mr. Koontz, will re
turn home with them.
While loading out wheat from the
Farmers Elevator company Wednes
day evening, John Burke fell from a
ladder, 8 feet to the ground. He
struck the ground on his right should
er, causing a severe strain.
Orville Reeves, well known in Ath
ena as an expert mechanic and com
bine harvester operator, is here from
Portland, visiting at the M. W. Han
sell home. Mr. Reeves is now con
nected with one of Portland's leading
photo studios.
John Pfankuck, a mechanic who
operated the combine for the Read
Barrett outfit, was called to Kansas
City by the critical illness of his
mother. He left Athena yesterday,
giving up a position in Montana dur
ing the harvest season there.
The Weston. Leader reports that
thefts continue from the wheat fields
in the Dry creek region. Ramsey and
Jess L. York neglected to guard their
wheat in the Bade field last Thurs
day night, and unknown marauders
with a truck drove off with between
25 and 30 sacks.
One of the coaches of the Union Pa
cific stages was delayed for a short
time in Athena, Monday, when fire
was started by a short circuit in the
electrical equipment. The fire was
put out without damage to the coach
when Forrest Zerba crashed the con
tents of a bomb fire extinguisher in
to the flames. Passengers lost no
time in leaving the coach when the
fire took place. . ,
The missionary meeting of the
Christian church waa held Wednes
day afternoon at the. home of Mrs.
L. Sherman, with 17 members and
guests present. Mrs. Louis Keen
presided, and Miss Juanita Crawford
had charge of a very interesting pro
gram, which treated of Missions in
South Africa.' Papers were read by
Mrs. Garner, Mrs. Gerking and Mrs.
L. L. Lieuallen, and a playlet was
presented by Misses Mildred Hansell,
Betty Eager, Mary Berlin and Mar
jorie Douglas; a solo by Miss Dena
Lieuallen, and a short story by Mrs.
Keen. Refreshments were served by
the hostess and Miss Maud Sherman
assisted by Mrs, Garner. The Sep
tember meeting will be with. Mrs.

Mrs. L. R. Pinkerton had the pleas
ure of visiting her cousin Virgil
Adair of Boise, Idaho, in Pendleton,
Saturday. Mr. Adair is an air mail
pilot and was pilot of one of the
stunt planes in Pendleton.
News came Friday of the marriage
of Miss Hazel McFarland, when she
became the bride of W. B. Armintrout
of Pendleton. The marriage ? took
place m Walla Walla. The couple
will make their home in Pendleton.
Mrs. Armintrout has been in train
ing at St. Anthony's hospital the past
few months. i '
Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Jones, Mr. and
Mrs. Vernon O'Harra and Mr. and
Mrs. Charles May enjoyed an auto
mobile trip over the skyline road,
Sunday. Mr. Jones says that in the
face of reports that there are few
huckleberries in the mountains, he
saw evidences of a big crop in green
berries in the district north of the
tollgate resort.
"Frenchy" Dupuis of Weston came
to Athena Monday afternoon and
called on Dr. McKinney for the third
time to. have a painful felon lanced.
"Frenchy" was doing a . buck and
wing, holding his thumb high above
his head when seen by a Press re
porter. "The higher I hold it, the
less it hurts," said "Frenchy." "Get
a stepladder," advised the Press, man.
"Jake with me," said Dupius, still
dancing.
Mrs. E. C. Prestbye was hostess at
an attractive party, Saturday evening
at her home in honor of Mrs. C. L.
McFadden who is a visitor here, from
her home in Portland. Four tables of
bridge were at play during the eve
