Mrs. Sims Dickenson and daughter Phyllis were in Walla Walla Tuesday at the bedside of Mrs. Dickenson's father, TV P. DeFreece, who is criti cally ill at the Walla Walla hospital. Mrs. A. R. Scott and two small daughters of Los Angeles arrived in Athena last Saturday and will spend about six weeks visiting Mrs. Scott's sister Mrs. Glenn Dudley and family. The members of the W. C. T. U. will meet next Tuesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Louis Dowd, on Weston Mountain, where a program of interest will be the feature of the meeting. Mrs. M.- M. Johns returned home Tuesday evening from Portland where Bhe has spent several weeks. On ac count of her brother's illness, Mrs. Johns will return at once to be at his bedside. Bill Switzler. owner of the Umatil la ferry boat on the Columbia river, was an Athena visitor Saturday. Mr. Switiler is identified with the Pen dleton Round-Up each year in capac ity of a Hi-Yu wrangler in the arena. He formerly was engaged in raising horses in large numbers in the Horse Heaven country, and his stock used to be in demand for the wild horse race t the R&Uoi-Up. Elmer Johnson and son Merle arriv ed in Athena last week from their home in Lebanon, Or., . in quest of summer work. Merle departed for Hood River Monday where he will be engeged in fruit packing. Mr. and Mrs.' Chas. Kirk, and daughter Areta, arrived in Athena Wednesday evening from Creston, B. C. After a few days spent with rela tives and friends they will go to Halsey, Ore., for an extended visit. Pastor Sias has Been trimming the shade trees at the Christian church parsonage this week. With ladder, saw and a good strong arm, Mr. Sias has changed the appearance of the trees for the better. Attorney Prestbye has been suc cessful in eradicating the dandelion growth in his lawn, with a newweed exterminating fluid, which is sprayed over the lawn, affecting weeds but in no way injuring the grass. Mahlon Haworth, who has been at Pendleton for several months receiv ing medical treatment is in Athena, staying at the home of his father. He is better than for some time past. He has been in the hospital for a year. W. J. Giiolson has returned from a visit to his daughter, Mrs. A. A. Foss, north of Freewater. Mr. Ghol son explains that he didn't cool off by changing his location from Athena to the Walla Walla valley for a few days. The union evening service . will occur at the Christian church next Sunday night. Rev. Dow will deliver the message. Beside a general song service, special music will also be furnished. The public is cordially in vited. A goodly number of swimmers took advantage of the free instruction given by Harold Hatton of Pendleton at Legion Natatorium, the fore part of the week. Nelson arrived in Athena this week, from California; they brought with them a pair of love birds for Bonnie, and the little miss is very much de lighted with her pets. Mr. Blatchford who is a medical student at University of Oregon, went to Pomeroy, Washing ton, where he has a position in a grain warehouse for the harvest seas on. Mrs. H. I. Watts was hostess to the Athena bridge club last Friday after noon. Four tables of bridge were at play with the following guests pres ent: Mrs. A. A. Mclntyre, Mrs. A. H. Mclntyre, Mrs. Fred Pinkerton, Mrs. F. L. Zerba, Mrs. R. D. Blatch ford, Mrs. J. C. Harwood and Mrs. Lew McNair. High club score was won by Mrs. W. S. Ferguson and high guest score by Mrs, A. A. Mc lntyre. Punch was served during the afternoon by the hostess. Mr. and Mrs. Flint Johns returned Tuesday from Vancouver, Wash., where they attended the Golden Wed ding celebration of Mrs. Johns' par ents, Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Chapman of that city. The event was a notable one, comemmorating a double wedding that of Mr. and Mrs. Chapman and Mr. and Mrs. Frank Wickar, the lat ter a sister of Mr. Chapman, which occurred fifty years ago last Sunday in Kansas, the two couples being present as well as ten people who at tended the first wedding. The cele bration was held at a picnic in Kalama, Wash., with one hundred relatives being present, including eleven children of Mr. and Mrs. Chap man and their families. On Monday a reunion of the Chapman family was held at the parental home in Van couver. . .
