The potatoes sold on the Portland markets the past season have been of high quality, declares the in spector under the state market de partment. Several experiments were carried out to determine the variety which should be used for different nurooses. These trials demonstrated that the large Netted Gems are first choice as bakers, due to their dry, mealy texture and thick peel. Red mond and Klamath Falls produce Netted Gems popular with the trade for general purposes as they are of a desirable size and there is a mini mum loss in peeling. The Burbanks from the Willamette valley and Clarke county, Washington, are first choice for mashing, making French Fries and in the manufacture of po tato chips. Five carloads of Bur banks from the Willamette valley topped the potato-chip in California in price the past season. The Bur banks have proven to have the best keeping quality of any variety in lo cal storage during 1929. "There is one phase of the automo bile accident situation that seldom comes in for consideration- how many lives has good automobile con struction saved?" observes an ex change. "Four-wheel brakes and non ghatterable glass have often made minor collisions of what might have been fatal crashes. But the all-steel body has been the safeguard that has stood between motorists and death in many accidents. A car with a steel body triumphantly met the severest test ever given an automobile. It was released down a runway and plunged oft the end, turning over six times. The test was repeated three times and the car then driven away under its own power. Last year over 30,000 people were killed by automo biles. That was a horrifying record but was much less than it would have been with old-style car construction." o The editor of one of our exchanges points out that heavy fire losses have an adverse effect on fire insurance rateB. When destroyed property, is not rebuilt the taxes such property would have paid must be borne by others. These facts enter into the operation of every business and are items of importance in determining the cost of living. - They affect, in one way or another, the price of every purchase, whether it is a home or a loaf of bread. A single mine in one of the West ern states has an assessed valuation of over $92,000,000. This is equival ent to the valuation of 18 of the state's 29 counties and represents 79 per cent of the total valuation of the two largest counties. This example is indicative of the importance of mining to the West. The prosperity of many states is dependent in a largo measure on the future mine tax poli cies adopted. o . Coolidge sees good derived from tourists spending their money abroad. Well, Cal has the reputation of stcing about as far as anybody, lla figures that travel is a great civiHuor, that it takes money to travel, and that most of the ducats spent over seas eventually find their way homo again. Maybe he spent some ovei- there, we dunno. David Lloyd George sees tariff re prisals against this country and de claims such trade barriers cause com mercial mischief. This old boy, who is broad between the eyes, once in a while hits ther nail squarely where it's made to be hit; on the bead. It is not surprising that police have found Los Angeles to be a link in a national narcotic ring. General sup position that Los Angeles dope was supplied from somewhere has pre vailed for some time. Jay Upton may be the dark horse to come under the wire and grasp the gubernatorial nomination plum. Main St. Walla Walla NORBLAD'S RENUNCIATION (Morning Cregonian) Governor Norblad's announcement that he will not again become a can didate for governor .this year because of his regard for the primary verdict whereby he failed to obtain the nom ination would have been received by the public as a , gesture of good sportsmanship had he not immediate ly spoiled it all by attacking M. F. Corrigan, W. C. North and R. W. Sawyer again in an attempted justi fication of his own acts in removing them from office. The general charge in effect that Mr. Sawyer was a trouble-maker on the highway com mission, as well as a perniciously active politician while serving as a state official, will harm the governor in the public estimation more than it will harm Mr. Sawyer. One need hold no special brief for the Bend publisher to recognize this fact. Nor is Governor Norblad very con vincing when he attempts to draw a parallel between his own removal of Mr. Sawyer and the prior removal of William Duby from the highway com mission at the time of Mr. Sawyer's appointment to that body. Mr. Duby, a democrat, was removed by a re publican governor in order to bring a majority of the commission into po litical harmony with a republican ad ministration, just as a democratic governor in the preceding administra tion had removed a republican com missioner in order to make the com mission majority democratic. But Governor Norblad, a republican, re moved a republican commissioner. To all who follow the methods of-party politics the difference is highly obvious. The bete noir that has been at the governor's heels from the first mo ment of his coming into the succes sion has been his own predilection, amounting to a negative genius, for doing and saying the wrong thing. Apparent all along his course, that trait again shows up in the manner of his renunciation. Cherries and prunes are especially plentiful in orchards which escaped the late frosts. Fay LeGrow spent the Fourth at Lind, Wash., where he was interested in the races, roping contests and horse breaking. Fay made the Washington town sit up and take notice in the racing events, and De Young, a lider from his Crab Creek cattle ranch, won the honors in the roping and rotgh riding contests. Mr. LeGiDw's horse, "Joe," won a match race and trother of his string won in the purse races. Lind is a lively little town, supported by a grain-growing district. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Cannon have tak en charge of the Watts farm and have moved there to assume the duties at tendant upon farm life. Misses Eatherine and Carrie Sharp left Saturday via Walla Walla, for Monmouth, where they will attend the summer session of the Normal school. Nib Ying, for years a cook at the St. Nichols hotel in this city, was in Walla Walla yesterday, en route to China, where he will remain a year. Uncle John Callender recreated at Bingham Springs last week. He had a splendid time, and though he caught no fish, he returned with a fresh story or two. Measles has appeared in Athena again, the children in the King family being afflicted. Two little girls in George Gerking's family east of town have just recovered from the disease. The harvesting of wheat has com menced at Echo and at Pilot Rock. Tuesday morning. C. A. Cramer of Echo commenced harvesting 1700 acres. He expects a yield of 25 bush els per acre. E. A. Dudley went over to Walla Walla the first of the week where he purchased four mules to finish out his team of 32 which will be attached to his combine. The ribbons will be handled by his son Dean. Never before have Athena farmers had cause to rejoice more over flat tering prospects for a big grain crop. Every indication points to a bumper yield. The acreage is normal and ad ditional harvesting machinery pur chased this summer, would indicate that the crop is to be well taken care of. A lawn party was given by Miss Cecile Boyd Tuesday at her home on Fifth street in honor of Melville Johns, who is visiting here from Sea side. Fifty young people were pres ent and enjoyed themselves on the lawn, which was lighted with Chinese lanterns, until near midnight. Sand wiches, cake and punch were served, with four small ladies as waitresses.
