Spokane, are visiting at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Geo. R. Gerking, west
of Athena.
Miss Hilda Dickenson came tip from
Arlington Sunday and spent the day
at the home of her parents, Mr. and

C. M. Eager returned from Sea
side Saturday, and went to Dayton,
where his father has been confined to
his home with illness.
Miss Margaret Proebstei, who is
visiting her sister, Mrs. Lilian
Frederick at Weston, called on Athe
na friends yesterday.
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Swift will noon
be at home in the Harris cottage, on
Fifth street, recently vacated by Mr.
and Mrs. J. F. Kershaw.

were guests of Dr. Geyer and Dr.
Cowan on the golf course at tho Wal
la Walla country club, Sunday.
Mr. Dean Rubin and Miss Jefrra
Boatright of 'St. John, Washington,
were Sunday guests at the homo of
Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Watkins.
Mrs. Sims Dickenson entertained
the members of the Methodist Ladies'
club at her home in the north part
of town, Wednesday of last week.
Miss Maude Sherman came over
from LaGrande, where she in attend
ing summer school and spent Sunday
with her mother, Mrs. L. Sherman.
J. H. Templeton, Seattle attorney,
accompanied his wife to Athena Sun
day, where they spent the day at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Chase Garfield.
George Gerking received by freight
Tuesday, a used Case combine which
he wUl have overhauled and repaired
in time to operate in harvesting his
crop.
Mrs. Lillian Dobson, who is visit
ing relatives in Portland, sailed from
that city Wednesday for Hawaii,
where she contemplates spending the
summer.
Mrs. O. M. Castleman and daugh
ter Barbara have returned to their
home at Ontario, Oregon, after
spending some time at the J. H. Ker
shaw home.
Mrs. J. V. Mitchell of Portland, is
visiting at the home of her sister,
Mrs. Fred Gross, west of town. Her
son, Robert, also was a guest at the
Gross home last week.
Lew McNair, after a vacation ol
two weeks duration, returned to his
position with the Athena Department
store, Wednesday. Lew made a trip
to Lewiston, Idaho, last week.
Mrs. L. G. Stott has returned from
Dayton, Wash., for a visit at tho
home of her daughter, Mr3. E. O. Ie.
Mrs. Lee is also entertaining her
niece, Mrs. G. W. Webbor, of Los
Angeles.
Mrs. Henry Dell was hostes to the
Athena Bridge club at her home on
Fifth street, Friday afternoon. High
score was made by Mrs. Glenn Dad
ley, low going to Mrs. Chase Gar
field. Two tables were in play.
Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton last week en
tertained two of her cousins, Edgar
Henderson and Ray Boone, who ar
rived by automobile from North
Carolina. They have left Athena lor
Genessee, Idaho, to visit relatives
there.
The Red & White store people en-
joyed their annual picnic Sunday at
Emigrant Springs. Mrs. Ed Mon
tague of the Athena store, registered
as the 100th arrival at the picnic, and
was awarded a sack of flour as a
prize.
The social period of the meeting of
McKenzie Chapter, O. E. S. was ob
served in honor of Mrs. Lee Hiteman,
worthy matron, who will leave Athena
in the near future to reside at Clover
dale, Oregon, where Mr. Hitemnn will
be
superintendent of schools
A renresentative of the Kerr com
pany was in Athena this week re-
lacing lids on Kerr jars in .hock
i the local stores. Last year house--iv

tables, attributable to defective jar
lids, and the company decided to re
place the present stock with new
lids.
On Thursday of last week, Mrs. A.
. Kimball. Mrs. O. O. Stephens and
Mrs. Ralph Hassell of Pendleton en
tertained a group of Athena friends
at a bridge luncheon given at the
home of Mrs. Hassell. Four tables
of bridge were in play first prize go
imr to Mrs. U. I. WatU and second to
Mrs. M. L. WatEs.
Roy Pambrun visited with friends

in Walla Walla, Tuesday.
Mrs. Ernest Haney was a business
visitor in Walla Walla Tuesday.
Mrs. A. W. Logsdon. is confined to
her home this week owing to illness
Miss Adaline Kennedy of Weston
was a Sunday guest of Dorothy
Burke.

Miss Dorothy Berlin, teacher in
the Roslyri, Washington, high school
is home for the summer months.

ter, at St. Mary's hospital, Walla
Walla.
Laurence Rose took ill at the Jos.
N. Scott ranch last week and went to
Portland. He is reported to be improving.
The Baptist Bible school held their
annual picnic at Bingham Springs,
Wednesday with a goodly number in
attendance.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Hirsch and
daughters of Waitsburg visited the
E. C. Prestbye and J. C. Harwcod
homes Sunday.
Mrs. R. A. Duffield and Mrs. W.
McPherson visited Mrs. Jennie Proeb
stel and Mrs. Lilla Kirk at the Kirk
farm Tuesday.
Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton and Mr. and
Mrs. J. W. Pinkerton were Wednes
day guests at the Maurice Frazier
home in Milton.
Mr. and ' Mrs. Edgar Spencer,
(Dorothy Lee) came down from Pa-
louse and spent Sunday at the E. O.
Lee home west of town.
At a recent meeting of the Athena
Farmers Co-operative Grain Assoc
iation, Lee Wilson was chosen N as
secretary-treasurer and manager.
The annual Bible school picnic of
the Christian church was held Wed
nesday at the Walla Walla citv park
with about sixty-five in attendance.
Miss Reta Barrett and mother Mrs.
Jennie Barrett arrived last week
from Portland and will spend the
summer months at their home in
Athena.
Miss Mary Tompkins who under
went an operation for appendicitis at
St. Mary's hospital last Saturday is
convalescing nicely. Her rapid re
covery is expected. ' .
A recent birth in the James Hodg
son family makes Joe Hyatt of Wes
ton Mountain a great grandfather,
and Lee Kirk, well known in Athena,
a great, great grandfather.
Mr. Claire Gurney visited relatives
here Sunday. Mrs. Gurney left Wed
nesday for Hilgard, Oregon,, near
where she and Mr. Gurney will be
located for the summer.
Mrs. J. F. Kershaw and niece Miss
Barbara Castleman of Ontario, who
is a visitor at the Kershaw home
were Walla Walla callers Tuesday. .
Mrs. Kibbey entertained her four
boys and six other youngsters at her
home - Wednesday. Out-door games
and fireworks were means provided
for youngsters to while away the
hours. Refreshments, consisting of
sandwiches, ice cream, cookies and
lemonade were served by the hostess
Athena friends were pleased to
greet Mr. and Mrs. Ora Rhodes and
son Edward, who arrived in Athena
and spent the week-end here, before
going on to Colfax. After visiting
relatives at Colfax, Mr. and Mrs,
Rhodes will proceed to Canada, where
they will remain several week with
the Jenkins family before returning
to their home at Owensburg, Ken
tucky, where Mr. Rhodes has a J.
C. Penney company store.
The W. C. T. U. held its monthly
meeting at the home of Mr;. Jesse
Gordon, Tuesday p. m. at 2:30 o'clock.
There were eleven members and live
guests present. After the business
session, an entertaining program pre
pared by Mrs. Louis Stewart, consist
ed of violin solos by Miss Tubbs ac
companied by Arleen Foster, and
readings by Mrs. Stewart and other
members. Dainty refreshments were
gerved by Mrs. Louis Keen and Mrs.
Jesse Gordon. The next meeting will
be held at the home of Mrs. Ixuia
Dowd, July 22nd. Mrs. Lee and Mrs.
Jesse Smith were appointed on the
committee for refreshments.
Mrs. Sims Dickenson and Mrs.
Fred Gross were hostesses to the
Methodist Ladies club Wednesday.
The rooms were beautifully decorated
with sweet peas and delphiniums.
There were twenty-five ladies pres
ent. A short program, conducted
by Mrs. H. II. Hill and readings by
Mrs. Will Harden, Mrs. John Burke
and Mrs. Willard Crabill. Delicious
refreshments were served by the
hostesses, assisted by Mrs. Claude
Dickenson and Miss Phyllis Dicken
son. Because of the illness of Mary
Tompkins, the picnic will not be at
the Tompkins country home but was
changed to the Walla Walla park,
for next Sunday. , Visitors present
were Mrs. Minnie Mitchell of Port
land, Mrs. Frank Little and her
mother, Mrs. McKinney of Arlington.

Susia Campbell. It was voted by the
Grand Lodge of Oregon to raise the
membership fee to two dollars a
year, to become effective July 1st,
1930. A committee composed of Mrs.
Ada Montague and Mrs. Lorena
Tucker served refreshments.

The sewer pipe across Third street
at intersection of Main has long been
deficient in affording satisfactory
drainage. Excavation by Water
Superintendent Miller this week dis
closed that the drainage tiling had
broken down and further that the
pipe is high at the lower end of the
drain. . ' '
An event of considerable interest
to the family was the 65th birthday
anniversary of W. J. Crabill, last
Sunday. In honor of the occasion,
Mrs. Ray O'Harra, da'usjhtsr of Mr.
and Mrs. Crabill, served a sumptuous
dinner at her Pendleton home. Covers
were laid for eight, including Grand
ma Sleeman.
All Athena boys, or .noarly all,
who are old enough to work am em
ployed in bean cultivation in this
vicinity at this time. Marvin Hansell,
field superintendent for tho Eiekhoff
Farm Products company, is the big
"man behind the gun" in the estima
tion of the boys, just now, for he is
the guy they look to for jobs. '
