Bill To Increase Compensa
tion Passes House By a
Vote of 324 to 49.
Washington. Sweeping . increases
in the government's ' compensation
policy for World War veterans were
voted by the house after more than
a week, of debate, climaxed by a
tumultuous eight hour session in
which many predictions were freely
made that President Hoover would
veto the measure.
In the face of protests by Chair
man Wood of the appropriations com
mittee that such legislation should
not be enacted in view of the presi
dent's . request that expenditures be
curtailed, a bill to provide compensa
tion for every disability incurred up
to Jan. 1, last was approved S24 to
49, and sent to the senate.
Ordinally sponsored by Chairman
Johnson -of the World War veterans
committee, the measure was so great
ly altered by amendment that its
author, after failing in an effort to
have it sent back , to his committee,
obtained unanimous consent to change
its name to the "Rankin Bill."
Representative Rankin of Missis
sippi, democrat, was responsible for
many of the changes in the measure.
Among others was an amendment
proposed by Rep. Connery, democrat,
Massachusetts, advancing the time
limit of the presumptive clause from
Jan. 1, 1925, as carried in the original
bill to Jan. 1, 1930.
Catch Escaped Prisoner
Thomas J. Hazelwood, trusty, who
escaped from the Walla Walla prison
farm, was apprehended by the Pasco
police less than ten hours after his
absence was first noticed. Guards
from the prison left immediately and
returned Hazelwood to his cell.

Weston Leader: Melvin Barnett,
eight years old, who early in March
rescued Marilyn Adkins, five, after
she had fallen into the raging waters
of Pine creek in the upper end of
town, will receive no recognition from
the Carnegie Hero Fund commission
of Pittsburgh, Penn. Although it has
been well authenticated that Melvin
effected the rescue at imminent risk
to his own life, and that last year he
saved his younger brother at the same
spot in the same manner, his cour
ageous act, it appears, does not come
within Jthe scope of the jCarnegw

matter and supplied the Carnegie
commission with facts and evidence.
Below is the text of the reply he re
ceived from F. M. Wilmot, under date
of April 15r . .
"Your letter of recent date, giving
information on the case of Melvin
Barnett, was duly received. ' : ;
"The.. Carnegie Hero Fund applies
to acta in which conclusive evidence
may; be obtained showing that the
person performing the act voluntarily
risked his own life in saving, or at
tempting to save, the life of a fellow
being. ' .''. '
"While Master Melvin's act is com
mendable, from the facts at hand it
does not appear that it was attended
by any extraordinaly risk to his own
life; and for this reason his case, I
regret to say does not come within
the scope of the fund."

State college has come forth with a
farm tractor endurance - run which
since its start on April 12 has broken
two world records and was still going
strong at last reports. The machine,
a Caterpillar 10, has been operated
day And night without stopping the

ditions, the tractor is equipped with
every sort of automatic device ob
tainable to register draft with var
ious implements, .total, revolutions of
engine and miles traveled, fuel and
water consumption, track wear and
other factors. The test is being check
ed by both the agricultural and en

rows and floats, the tractor has cul
tivated a considerable area of the col
lege farm and an entire 130 acre
prune orchard as well as some other
