Watts is home from Portland, where she spent several weeks, receiving medical treatment, Mrs. Montague of Roosevelt, Wash., is at the home of her son Ed Mon tague, and may remain for the win ter. Miss Merle Best former primary teacher in the Athena schools, and now in the Pendleton schools, was an Athena visitor Sunday. Miss Vera Grant, former instructor in Athena high school, and now on her fourth year with Mac-Hi at Mil ton, was in Athena Saturday, visiting old time friends. Farmers who have finished seeding in this vicinity are rejoicing at the recent rain which has brought the grain up. Others are now engaged in putting in the fall crop. Miss Ellen Henry came from Beard man where she is a member of the faculty of the Boardman schools, and spent the week-end with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Henry. LeRoy McCubbins, employed by the Farmers' Grain Elevator company is taking a week's vacation. He left Tuesday evening for Portland to take in the International Stock Show. ' Rev. and Mrs. Dow and son Jack, accompanied Dr. Kempton, pastor of the White Temple Baptist church of Walla Walla on a motor trip to Van couver, B. C, the .fore part of the week. Miss Lois Mclntyre went to Cor vallis and spent the week-end with her brother Norman, at Oregon State college. She returned home Monday, driving back in Norman's Whippet coupe. Miss Dena Lieuallen of Adams, junior at University of Oregon, has been chosen as member on the glee club and also of the Polyphonic choir, an organization comprising thirty-five voices. H. M. Cockburn, well known resi dent and former county commissioner is in Portland, where he is receiving medical treatment. It is reported that Mr. Cockburn has been in fail ing health for some time. Miss Hilda Dickenson, chief oper ator for the Pacific Telephone & Telegraph company at the Arlington exchange, is remaining at the home of her parents in Athena for a few days on account of illness. Mrs. Jacob Proebstel of Portland, is visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. M. M. Johns in Athena. Mrs. Proebstel returned to Athena Sun day with Mr. and Mrs. Flint Johns and Mrs. Johns, who motored to Wallula, where Mrs. Proebstel was visiting at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Ayers. Eickhoff left Wednesday morning for the Lake Chelan country on a deer hunt. They will outfit with saddle and pack horses for the trip into the hunting country. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Kershaw ar rived home from a two weeks motor trip to Idaho. They visited their daughter Frederica at Gooding, and traversed the country adjacent to the Owyhee dam project. Penn Harris has leased the Duf- field barber shop and will take charge Monday morning. Mr. Harris will close the shop he is at present oper ating. Mr. and Mrs. Duffield and son Curtis are leaving for Portland, Sun day. The ladies of the Christian church announce their annual bazaar and dinner for Saturday, December 7th, when many articles suitable for Christmas presents will be displayed. Watch for further particulars as to place, etc. . Mrs. Cornell arrived in Athena this week from Brogan, Oregon, to join her husband, L. A. Cornell, who recently purchased the Thompson Garage, Mr. and Mrs. Cornell will live in the residence purchased from Mr. Thompson. Mr. and Mrs. Penn Harris, Mrs Bert Logsdon ' and Mrs. Sheldon Taylor attended the funeral of W. H. Yenny at Walla Walla, Monday. Mr. Ycnny was a pioneer farmer of the Russell Creek neighborhood in the Walla Walla valley. About sixty dollars are the net proceeds derived from the chicken dinner given by the ladies of the Baptist church in the dining room at Masonic Hall, Saturday evening. The dinner was well patronized by the public. The members of the 0. D. O. club had a most pleasant time Friday afternoon, when Mrs. Jesse Gordon, entertained the club at its first meet ing of the fall. The club will meet next at the home of Mrs. Ross Catron, on November 8. Mrs. Frank Williams of Freewater, who was at the- home of her son A. L. Jenkins, when Mrs. Jenkins was in the hospital, has returned to her home. Mrs. Jenkins continued to im prove satisfactorily since returning home'fr&m the hospital. A ram which leaves approximately three inches of moisture in the sum mer fallow, has induced those farm ers who had not seeded on account of the drought to get to work, and broadened the smile of those farmers who had their seeding finished. Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton will be host ess to the Missionary society of the Christian church next Wednesday at her home west of town. At this time the society will receive garments to be sent to the Midnight Mission, of Los Angeles, members are reminded. Johnny Hoey has recently built an addition to his home in the north part of town. His friend McArthur ad vises the Press that he is somewhat suspicious of Johnny's intentions for the future, but admonished tho re porter to say that "Mac was saying nothing." Rev. and Mrs. D. E. Baker arrived in Athena Monday evening from their home in Eugene, and are guests at the home of their son, Bryce Baker. Rev. Baker, formerly pastor of the Baptist church of Athena, will preach there Sunday, at which time he will be pleased to meet his old-time Ath ena friends. " "' Mrs. 0. M. Castleman accompanied by her mother Mrs. Willaby arrived Wednesday from Ontario. After a short visit Mrs. Castleman will pro ceed by motor to Portland where she will be joined by her sister Mrs. Goldie Bacon and the two will go to Seattle for a month where they visit Barbara Castleman, who is attending University of Washington. Miss Emily Menefee of Weston wishes to rent a room or basement suitable for dancing lessons, prefer ably with a piano. Miss Menefee will be at the home of Mrs. H. A. Barrett, tomorrow at 9 a. m. Miss Menefee announces that she will hold dancing classes in Athena on Satur day mornings hereafter. Tomorrow the classes will meet at Mrs. Barrett's home. Miss Beulah Smith and Miss Dorothy Brodie motored to Walla Walla Wednesday evening where they attended the wedding of Miss Martha Maxwell and Walter Wright at the First Christian church.
