THE PRESS, ATHENA, OREGON, OCTOBER 25, 1929 Claim Tigers in India : ,, Serve Useful Purpose The unconventional opinion that (tigers are really "shy beasts," fulfill ing a "very .useful, function In nature by keeping down the deer" and oth er anhunls that damage crops, Is jurged In a statement from India made public by the British Society for the Preservation of the Fauna of the Em pire. " ' 1 ! Even when tigers take to killing cattle, continues this surprising de fense of nn animal usually dreaded instead of praised, that fact Is not necessarily harmful to human affairs. Tn Tmlln Mia 1ira'a firlvnrnfA 111-irpfL . religious scruples induce the villagers to keep alive vast numbers of old 'and decrepit cattle. ! Even the Indian popular leader, Mahatnm Ghandl, was criticized se verely for permitting an old, sick cow to be put out of pain. What occiden tals would consider their duty, to get rid of useless and miserable nnlinnls, ils shirked by Indian villagers, the spokesman of the Preservation soci ety argues, and Is usefully taken over ;by the tigers, unhandicapped by re ligion. : Most tigers are imbued, the state ment continues, with a wholesome fear of man, mankillers being the rare exception. It may be considered im probable, nevertheless, that any large percentage of Indian villagers will in vite one of these supposedly shy and useful forest kitties to come nnd live In his barn In order to protect bis garden. Alaskan Natives Erect j Buildings Over Graves j The natives of Alaska are much given to superstitious beliefs, witch craft and ghosts, and as a rule they are dreadfully afraid of the ghosts of the departed, so that the section !of land given over to the dlsposl Itlon of the dead is held In great rev erence. The dead one, with all his personal effects, such as skins, blanket and trinkets accumulated dur ing life, Is laid away nnd is gener ally safe from molestation, although occasionally some member of the tribe may become so depraved as to remove some of the goods if he can ;do so without detection. Frequently a small house is erected over this accumulation, so that in the course ,of time the burial ground comes to ,take on the appearance of a nilnla iture village. In some parts this has jtaken the form of an annual cere mony and on a certain day of the nutumn many persons muy bo seen icrectlng these houses over the rest 'Ins place of llintr rtnnnrtert relntlvea. Wild Sheep and uoati There were wild nionntiiln sheep in the Itocklcs and some other parts of the continent before the discovery of tAmerIcn by Europeans. The Indians had not domesticated these, however, nnd there has been no success since -at domesticating them or crossing 'them with domestic breeds. The Europeans brought sheep to the New world as soon as they began to set lie here, and all the domestic breeds now known In this country are de scended from similar breeds of the Old world. The nearest allies of the sheep are the goats. The span of life of a sheep Is from ten to fifteen years. Amazon's Wid Moutb J The width of the mouth of the Amazon river, says the Pathfinder Magazine, Is usually measured from Cubodo Notre to Puuto Putljocn, a dls- tance of 207 miles. This, however, In I eludes the ocean outlet of the Para river 40 miles wide which should be deducted, ns this stream is merely the lower stretch of the Tocantlns. It also Includes the ocean frontage of Marnjo, an Island about as large a the entire kingdom of Denmark lying In the mouth of the Amazon. The ac tual width of the principal mouth Is ut out 60 miles. Taking It Literally They had departed to a warmer clime for the winter mouths nnd the master was watching his servant un pack the various bags, while he checked their contents with an eagle eye. "You are sure we've got everything we want?" he asked, when the opera tion was almost complete. "Yes, sir," answered the vnlet. "What about the medicine chest t Is everything in ItT Dundages, safety pins, lint, brandy, Iodine" "There's no Iodine, sir," Interrupted the vnlet hastily. "Why not, Indeed?" "Because you'd written on the bot tle that It was not to be taken, sir," replied the other meekly. London Answers. Bar Library Shelves In medieval limes reading was serious business. When a writer began a volume the choice of subjects was easy there were but seven ; theology, philosophy, medicine, logic, graiumur, history and Canon law. Perhaps that Is why there were so few books. The libraries were little frequented, and perhaps that was because patrous bad to stand up to read. On no ac count could anyone take a book home, for all volumes were chained to the stall In which they were kept Even college libraries did not offer very ex tensive reading. King's hall In 1307 listed 87 volumes and the University 'library enumerated mere 122 as be ting In Its possession tn 1424. Petrol! Kent, . .... . '.. 21 Years Ago Friday, October 23, 1908 Win.
