THE PRESS, ATHENA, OREGON, SEPTEMBER 6, 1929- Prcss Paragraphs R. B. McEwen transacted business in Walla Walla Tuesday. Mrs. Theresa Berlin and family motored to Baker where they spent the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pittman and George Pittman spent Sunday and Monday on the Umatilla. Mr. and Mrs. H. I. Watts have re turned from a motor trip to Yellow stone, Banff and Lake Louise. Miss Lucille Holmes who has spent the past three weeks visiting at the home of her aunt Mrs. Therese Ber lin left for her home in Portland Tuesday. Glenn Dudley is driving a new La Salle sedan. R. A. Thompson made a business visit to Umapine Wednesday. Mrs. Jennie Gross and Mrs. Bryce Baker spent Tuesday in Walla Walla. Mrs. Lew McNair and daughter Le nore were Pendleton vistors Tuesday. Mrs. Fred Kershaw and daughter Frederica spent Tuesday in Walla Walla. Miss Hereford, prominent teacher in the school district west of town has returned. , Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Zerba and family have returned from a trip to Southern Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Roseberry left last week by motor for an ex tended visit with relatives in the mid dle western states. Rogers and son Emery return ed from Wallowa county Friday af ter a week's camping trip there. New concrete walks will be laid on Jefferson street in front of the Eager, Buroker, Michener and Zerba proper ty. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sanders and Mr. and Mrs. Zeph Lockwood have returned from a motor trip to Al berta. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kirk and daughter Areta are visiting relatives at Brownsville and Willamette val ley points. Mr. and Mrs. Barney Foster and daughter Arlene have returned from Seattle where they enjoyed a visit with relatives. The ladies of the Baptist church have had a new range installed in their newly arranged kitchen in the base ment of the church. Mrs. William Piper was over from her home in Walla Walla this week, visiting her son and family at Helix, and friends in Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Max Hopper and Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Prestbye enjoyed a week-end motor trip to Bonner's Ferry and over the Canadian line, re turning home Monday night. H. W. Cooley returned from Salem Wednesday, where he had been called by tre illness and death of his father. Fred Heath of Read and Hawley Mountain was here Wednesday. Dr. Rice took Paul Kibbey to Pen dleton, Wednesday, where he operated at St. Anthony's hospital for the ex cision of his tonsils. The youngster is at home again and ready for school. Athena and vicinity have enjoyed relief from the heat of last week. No rain has fallen but marked humidity has prevailed. Tuesday morning white frost was noted, but no damage reported The Walla Walla County Fair is in progress, starting Thursday of this week. An interesting, racing card and the usual exhibits are proving to be features and good crowds are in attendance. Dick Swift is driving a fine new school bus in which he "calls for and delivers" the children of district 17. Mrs. Lilla Kirk and son John have returned from a motor trip to Wil lamette valley points. Marion Hansell has purchased 360 acres of wreat land from Dendow Bros. The ranch is located on Wild Horse mountain and will be farmed by Ray Hansell who has been operat ing a place in Morrow county. A. L. Douglas formerly of Athena and Weston who for several years has made ris home in the lone country was in Athena Wednesday and re ports having sold his land and mov ing to Hermiston to reside permanently. M. L. Watts will accompany his son- in-law, Clason Adams, to Palo Alto, California, the last of the week, go ing by automobile. Mrs. Adams and Mrs. Watts will go to Portland for a few days after which the former lady will take the train for her Cali fornia home. Mrs. M. W. Hansell and daughters, Helen and Mildred, have returned from a shopping trip to Portland, and a visit with relatives at Oregon City. An uncle, Mr. Abel Hicktnan, accompanied them home and will do some carpenter work at their new home in town. Mrs. Sarah J. Ralston and grand daughter Caroline Entriken have left for their homes in Los Angeles after several days visit at the B. B. Rich ards home. Mrs. Ralston formerly lived on a large ranch near Adams and is a member of a prominent fam ily. She has been visiting old friends in rendleton, Adams and Weston dur ing her stay in this vicinity. . Mrs. Charles Betts leaves Friday for New York where she will make an extended visit with relatives. ' j Dr. Rice and I. L. Michener spent Labor Day luring the unwary trout from the waters of the Umatilla. Miss Dorthy Berlin left today for Roslyn, Washington, where she will teach Latin and French in the Roslyn high school. Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Dudley and. son Glenn, Jr., have returned home after a motor trip to Portland, Seattle and Victoria, B. C. Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Douglas of Hermiston visited the first of the week at the home of Mr. Douglas' son, Arthur Douglas. A. W. Douglas had his cousin, William Hegg and Mr. Stronberg, both of Sedro-Woolley, Wash., as guests Sunday night. Miss Geneva Staggs, a former school girl of Athena was married in Walla Walla last week to Stephen Mclntyre of Wasco, Oregon. Rev. and Mrs. Dow have returned home from the Blue Mountains where they spent the summer. Mr.' Dow's health is somewhat improved. Mrs. D. H. Sanders returned Mon day from a pleasant visit with rela tives in Portland, her sisters remain ing for a longer stay in the metrop olis. Mrs. Alex Johnson, sons and daugh ter, Mrs. Anna Haworth have return ed to their home in Weston from a motor trip to Portland, Seattle and Seaside. Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Edwards of Mil ton were in the city Friday evening. Their son, Ray Edwards will leave soon for Portland, where he has em ployment. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koepke are ex pected here for a visit about the mid dle of September. They will make the trip here from Glendale, Califor nia by motor. Mr. and Mrs. Frank DeFreece and Mr. and Mrs. Will Kirk returned to Athena Sunday night after several days spent in Portland. The party made the trip by motor. Mrs. G. D. Searce was a guest Wed nesday of Miss Dorothy Brodie. Mrs. Searce who is a college friend of Miss Brodie was en route to Spokane where she will make her home. Mr. and Mrs. James Cresswell and son James, Jr., are away on their vacation. They will visit at Forest Grove at the home of Mrs. Cresswell's parents, and other valley points. William Booher is slightly improved after a serious heart attack Mon day night. For a time his life was despaired of and members of his family summoned to his bed side. Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Douglas, Miss Marjory and Aaron, after a week3 vacation at Portland and Seaside have moved into their town house, from the farm for the school year. Mr. and Mrs. II. M. Hale have re turned from Roseburg bringing Miss Margaret, who has spent the past month in that city, back with them. They expect to move into Helix soon. John Foss and family of Moro pas sed through last week on their way to visit Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Foss at their fruit farm near State Line. Mr. Foss is at present in the automobile business. Helix View Point: Mr. and Mrs. E. E. E. Tate returned Monday, evening from a weeks vacation, visiting inter esting Canadian points. Owing to forest fires they were forced to return by way of Helena, Mont. Miss Frederica Kershaw will leave about the tenth of the month for Gooding, Idaho, where she will teach during the coming year. Miss Ker shaw will teach piano in the con servatory of Gooding College . of Idaho. While on his paper routes deliver ing the Los Angeles Times in Wilmar, California, recently Mel ville Johns was severely bitten on the leg by a vicious police dog. The laceration was deep and required sev eral stiches to be taken. Mr. and Mrs. Carl Sheard are re modeling their house north of town, and when completed will have one of the most modern and cozy homes in this vicinity. A new bath room and sleeping room and kitchen built-ins will be added to the house. Sarah, Bell Jantzen who has been spending her vacation at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Richards left Tuesday night for Spokane. Miss Jantzen is taking nurses training in the Deaconess hospital in the Wash ington city and is half through her course at this time. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton and two little daughters, accompanied by Mrs. J. W. Pinkerton returned the first of the week from Genessee, Idaho, where they visited relatives. Garth .Pinkerton, who had spent the past two weeks with his grandparents there returned with them. Mrs. E. M. Bollinger, wife of a former local Baptist minister, called on Athena friends on Monday, while en route to Raymond, Washington. The Bollingers have been located in Clarkston, Idaho, since leaving here but have recently resigned the pas torate of the church there and con template a trip to New York in the near future. Mrs. O. O. Stephens was honored Wednesday night at a session of the Eastern Star Chapter, when a delic ious repast was served after the busi ness hour by Mrs. B. B. Richards, Mrs. W. P. yttlejohn and Mrs. W. . Ferguson, Mrs. Stephens has been pianist for the Chapter for a num ber of years, and on leaving to make I her home in Pendleton, the ladies took this method of showing their" regard : for her. This will be followed by the morning service at 11:00, including a sermon by the new minister Mr. Sias. The basket-dinner at noon will attract a large number of members and friends of the church. A most cordial invitation is extended to the public to come and enjoy the fellowship of the occasion. There will be a song-service and sermon in the afternoon hour, as well as in the evening. The-hour ol the evening service will be 7:30, on through the fall and winter. E. C. Gallaher of Walla Walla was an Athena visitor Tuesday. BINGHAM SPRINGS Elliott Wood of Walla Walla is visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Winn of Bingham. Mr. and Mrs.. Walter Adams and children of Walla Walla were visit ors at Bingham Springs the past week. Mr. and Mrs. Kirk of Waitsburg visited this last wek with Mrs. Kirk's parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dudley at Bingham. Dean Long and family of Pendle ton spent Sunday and Labor Day at Bingham Springs. Frank Jackson and wife of Weston were Bingham Springs visitors last week. Mrs. Max Dudley and children of Pullman visited this last week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dudley at Bingham Springs.
