DR. S. F. SHARP
PHYSICIAN AND SURGEO'
Athena, Oregon
The Morning Oregonian publishes
the following bit of Bannock war
history as told by Darius H. Smith,
Harney county pioneer:
"It was my brother who shot and
killed Little Buffalo Horn, the war
chief, when the Bannocks, Piutes and
Snakes were on the warpath in 1878,
and I shot Chief Egan, who succedT
ed Little Buffalo Horn as leader of
the hostiles, a few days later, but
Egan was finally killed by Umatil
la Indians, who cut off his head."
So stated Darius H. Smyth, pioneer
of Harney county, whose postofflce
is Diamond, near Steens mountains,
There being little excitement at Dia
mond, Ri Smith and his wife Penel
ope came to Portland to see the
sights and are lodged at the Impe-
rial. , ;
"We received word that the Indi-
ans were coming, so my father, my
brother and I took the women to
Camp Harney, which was a few
miles from where Burns now stands.
My father and brother returned to
the ranch in wagons to recover house
hold effects, and I was to follow two
days later n horseback. When I ar
rived at the ranch I saw plenty of
horses and camp fires. I supposed
the figures I saw around the fires
were other settlers until I heard the
Indian medicine man signing the la
ment, and I knew there had been a
deaths ;. : . ' ""' -
"There were about 500 Indians at
the ranch, and my father and brother
were in the house. Little Buffalo
Horn led the attack, and my brother
killed him with a rifle. The hostiles
murdered my father and brother. I've
heard it said that Little Buffalo Horn
was killed at Silver creek, a few
miles south of Riley postoffice, but
that's not true, for I was in the bat
tie at Silver creek. Buffalo Horn Is
buried at the foot of the. Jedge of
rimrock on the ranch where he was
killed. The children have picked
beads from his grave.
"When Egan succeeded Little Buf.
falo Hore to the command, the Indi
ans were on Silver creek. I was
there with about 60 settlers and coy
boys, and with us was, Colonel Ber
nard'3 cavalry, The troops charged
through the Indian village and I
blazen away at Egan and shot him
in the left arm. I knew Egan as well
as I know anyone, for I had seen
him many times. Without waitine
to finish Egan, I started after somej
oiner maians and rete French fol
lowed Egan, shooting half a dozen
times and missing him each time.
"Colonel Bernard could have ended
the" Indian war then, for the Indians
were ready to surrender; but Genera!
O.O. Howard sent a messenger to
the commander of the cavalry telling
him to wait. General Howard was a
couple of days away with his wag
ons. That's the facts of the case. If
it wasn't for Howard, the war would
have ended right then. Colonel Ber
nard told me to prevent the Indians
from going north, and we held them
back for a time."
"However, the Indians moved into
the John Day country and we had a
battle with them at Birch creek and
again farther north. The Umatilla
Indians came down and joined the
Bannocks, but later, to square them
selves with the reservation agent,
they took Egan and killed him. The
agent said evidence must be pro
duced, so they cut off his head und
the arm which I had wounded. The
arm was done up in splints.
"And when Egan was dead the In
dians were demoralized and scattered
back to where they came from.-
"The Indians perpetrated no dep
redation until they reached Happy
valley. They killed cattle for food
however, and took all the horses they
could. They had about 2000 horses.
There were some 800 Indians, includ
ing warriors, squaws and children.
The Indians went to Roby's ranch
and killed a couple of hundred head
in the corrals. I saw the carcasses.
Roby helped chase the Indians, and
went back to Boise, where he died
about six days later from exhaus
tion. . ....
"There were a couple of companies
of scouts, organized at Boise. The
commander of one scout company
abandoned one of his men when the
latter's horse fell with him. The In
dians captured this scout and tor
tured him .with fire until he died.
Some of the scouts were taking
horses which we had recaptured from
the Indians, and Colonel Bernard or
dered me to take charge of the horses.
"People who did not experience
that Indian war do not eraiise the
terror and bloodshed and the loss it
incurred. That part of Oregon was
remote from Portland in those days.
There is a lot of misinformation
aboat the Bannock war, and much
of it has gotten into print; but I'm
tejnng facts, for I was there and
know. Last summer a man came
making an. investigation and trying
to go, over the ground, but when I
attempted tP set him straight he
wouldn't believe me, for ho had a
lot of wrong notions." .
Mr. Smyth settled in Harney coun
ty in 1872 and from then until 1874
lived at the warm springs which is
now the site of the log pond for the
big sawmill now being erected on the
outskirts of Burns.
Ross-Tucker Nuptials'
Weston Leader: Miss Mildred Ross
and Dale Tucker were married Mon
day afternoon at Walla Walla. The
young couple were unattended and
left immediately following the wed
ding ceremony on an extended trip
which will include stops in Portland,
Seattle and Spokane. The couple will
make their home on a farm near He
lix.
Weeds Take Crop
It is reported that 240 acres of
wheat on the Bade place m the Dry
creek region, farmed by Dave Still
was found to be too weedy to make
crop and will be plowed up and
sown again in the fall. This is said
to be the only case of weeds wholly
taking a crop ever known in this part
of the county. -
