Portland To Chicago; A 61 Hour Service Portland. A. S. Edmonds, assistant traffic manager of the Union Pacific railroad, announces that on June 9 that road, in conjunction with the Chicago and Northwestern, would in augurate a 61 hour train from Port land to Chicago, eclipsing by two hours the time planned by any other road serving the Pacific "northwest. The return trip from Chicago to Portland will be made in 62 hours, 45 minutes. The announcement was made through Edmonds from Carl R. Gray, Union Pacific president. On March 9 the Great Northern railroad . announced it would replace the existing 68 hour train with a 63 hour passenger service sometime this summer. All other railroads im mediately announced intention of quickening time from the east, but the Union Pacific decision is the first starting date established. Intimations that the Great Nor thern railway may meet the 61 hour transcontinental train running be tween Portland and Chicago as an nounced at Portland by the Union Pacific, were contained . in a' state ment issued by Ralph Budd, president of the Great Northern when informed of the Portland report. Eastern Washington .: Hay Situation Acute Eastern Washington hay growers and operators elaborated on previous testimoney of the lack of profits in hay growing and the financial condi tion of farmers at third day of the Interstate Commerce Commission hearing at Seattle of the proposed 62 per cent increase in hay rates. It is better to lease hay growing land in the Yakima Indian reserva tion, comprising 65,000 acres of ir rigated land, than to own farms in that territory outright, Cliff Elliott, of WapatO, testified. He said he own ed 80 acres and leased a like amount on the reservation. The Feed Dealers' association of Washington is to submit evidence Monday denying allegations of rail roads that feed dealers absorb large profits. Leading western Washington dairymen and representatives of dis tributors are also expected to take the stand in opposition to the pro posed rate increase, -.' .
