ANTI-PISTOL LAWS IN ACTION
From time to time the Press has
noted in these columns the fallacy
of trying to curb crime by enactment
of anti-pistol laws. The Manufac
turer, a trade paper, sees "dangerous
possibilities in laws that curb in
dividual liberty, without taking into
account cause and circumstances, are
shown by a recent incident in New
York City."
Continuing, The Manufacturer gives
the following account of the circum
stance: "A taxi driver was held up
and managed to wrest the revolver
from his assailant and escape. Later
in a restaurant, he was observed by
the police showing the weapon to
some friends and was arrested under
the Sullivan law that prohibits pos
session of concealed weapons with
out a license. The man told his
story but under the law there was
apparently no choice but to arrest
hfm and revoke his hacking license.
In spite of the fact that a semi-invalid
wife and two children were de
pendent on him, his bail was set at
$500. He obtained his liberty only
when, by a fortunate circumstance,
a wealthy banker interested himself
in the case and put up the money for
bond. Thus a law which, theoretical
ly, is part of society's defense against
the criminal, permits the arrest of an
innocent man whose sole crime is that
he bettered a thug. It is doubtful if
the Sullivan act or any similar law
has ever greatly discomfited the un
derworld which continues as ever,
armed to the teeth. Restraints of
such laws are felt mainly by the law
abiding." o
A deputy United States marshal is
keeping Representative Michealson of
Chicago pretty much on the hike
these days evading the service of
summons to appear in court to an
swer the charge of smuggling booze
from Cuba into the United States.
Inasmuch as the federal court wants
him, it behooves the representative to
keep aloof. If he was wanted by one
of the Chicago courts, he wouldn't
need to make himself so scarce. Any
old body seems to get along well
enough with them.

Railroad heads are estimating that
vacation travel through the Pacific
Northwest this year will be fully 15
per cent greater than was the tourist
travel of 1928. The forecast is based
on requests for travel information re
quests for travel information receiv
ed by traffic departments. Interest
in nature's playground of the world
is also stirred in great extent by
friends recounting to others the won
ders of a motor trip to the Pacific
slope. And once they come, they arc
apt to return.

Myron T. Hcrrick, one of the na
tion's greatest diplomats, ambassador
to France, is dead after twenty-four
hour's illness. Herrick has done
much to cement friendly relations be
tween the world's two greatest re
publics. He first won the admiration
and respect of the French by remain
ing in Paris through the whole of the
World War, during which time his
advice and support was sought by
them.

An enthusiastic and exhuberant ex
change says this is no "paper pros
perity we are experiencing, but defi
nite progress thnt can be measured
either in dollars or in the scale of
a greater and happier civilization. At
the base of it all is a social and eco
nomic system dedicated to liberty and
the rights of the individual, that is
the envy of the world."

A little frame Mormon church at
Manassa, Colorado, made famous as
the edifice in which William Harrison
Dcmpsey, prize ring hero was bap
tised, is to be razed to make room
for a new structure. Manassa is
showing enterprise and so is Dcm
psey, now that he is recognized as
a successful promoter.

Eastern Oregon farmers would be
fortunate in having Roy Ritner on
the proposed federal farm board.
Mr. Ritner, besides being a successful
wheat-raiser, is a competent business
man, and as a state senator, proved
in different important instances that
he knew what it was all about. Give
the Umatilla county man a hand.

The little Hungarian pheasant,
which has become a great favorite
with Oregon sportsmen has been re
leased by State game farms this sea
son to the number of 1500. The Hun
garian is the bird that observes leap
year every year; the female chooses
her mate and once mated the pair

"To press reporters: "Nothing more
to say," reads a placard on the office
door of Representative Morgan of
Ohio, in Washington. ' Evidently, Mr.
Morgan considers the charge that his
baggage contained four quarts of
whiskey when he recently returned
from Panama, to be a closed incident.

The attorney General of the native
son state has ruled that the Jonc3
law amendments to the Volstead act
are inapplicable in California in con
nection with the Wright act, that
states regulatory measure. So Jones
doesn't pay the freight, down in Cali
fornia, at least.

"Prices slashed in stock market; 5,
860,210 shares dumped, causing list
of $1 to $20 losses," we read. No need
to be surprised, for it always hap
pens just that way when sane bank
ers refuse stock gamblers to play
their game on credit speculations.

In the Walla Walla territory, farm
ers are reported to be holding 2,000,
000 bushels of their 1928 wheat crop,
when ordinarily warehouses are em
pty at this time of the year. Mar
ket conditions indicate that farmers
will continue to hold.

We read where a Hollywood actress
has been scratched by her pet cat.
Very unusual; to say the least. Had
she been bitten by her pet poodle,
newspapers would never have men
tioned it. It's the unusual that makes
first page stuff.

Well, for once in a decade the Port
land Beavers have opened the league
season in regular prize package style.
"Oh, waud some power th' giftie gie
us" to see the tail end of the season
as we are lamping its beginning.

Nay, nay Nanette, no Frenchman
was enrolled as a member of the rum
ship I'm Alone crew. Every French
sailor in the crew is a Britisher ex
cept one, and his name is Jock McDonald!
The reading public is tired of the
Kennedys. The doings of Aimee and
"Ma" have given the newspapers
more bunk matter than was ever dug
up before. Skidoo the Kennedys.
The latter part of March put one
very much in mind of a certain
African animal; no need to mention
its name. Here's hoping that April
will be more "like a lamb."
Gene Tunney is mixing with royal
ty across the pond. Recently he
shared applause with Queen Marie at
a Madrid bull fight. Just a case of
horning in.

A Varney mail plane flew at the
rate of 187 miles per hour, carrying
366 pounds of mail between Salt Lake
and Boise. And that's going some.

Durant or the bankers are to rule the

stock exchange.

At a meeting of the Umatilla Cale
donian Society held in this city Sat
urday afternoon, it was decided to
hold the annual Caledonian picnic in
Athena on Friday and Saturday, May
22 and 23.
As the date for the primary elec
tion comes near the candidate for
nomination mixes with the voter and
seeks to repair any weak spot that
may be found in his political fence.
During the past few days Athena has
been visited by several candidates, the
most important, perhaps, being ex
Governor Geer, republican candidate
for the congressional nomination.
There will be a warm ball game on
the Athena grounds Sunday, after
noon between Cartano's "Sluggers"
and the regular Athena team. Follow
ing is the line up.
