Mr. and Mrs. Alex Mclntyre and Mrs. Fred Pinkerton were in , Walla Walla Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beckner and sons visited at the Charles Williams home Thursday. , W. P. Leach, an old time Athena resident, was in the city Monday, meeting friends. Five cars stolen in the county dur ing the past week have been recover ed by the sheriff's office. Ross Catron has been confined to his farm home Northwest of Athena this week with influenza. Miss Edna DeFreece and Mrs. James Cresswelli visited friends in Pendleton last Wednesday. . Laurence Pinkerton has been con fined to his home a part of the week with an attack of influenza. "Red" Wheatley and "Lefty" Kretz. er are busy painting and papering the H. I. Watts ranch house. E. B. Layng, a representative of the Continental Oil Company, was a business visitor here this week. Mrs. Zeltha Mclntyre, , Mrs. Erich Tucker and Neil Mclntyre visited relatives in Walla Walla Wednesday. With the disappearance of the snow, roller skates and bicycles have been brought forth from winter quarters. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. McFadden and family spent the week-end at the John A. McRae home in Walla Walla Mrs. F. S. LeGrow who underwent a minor operation in Walla Walla last week is convalescing satisfactor ily. George Banister is driving one of the oil trucks for Bryce Baker, local manager of the Continental Oil com pany. Mrs. Fred Kershaw motored to Wal la Walla Wednesday where she spent the day visiting her daughter Fred- erica. Mrs. A. L. McEwen spent the week end visiting friends here. Mr. and Mrs. McEwen are residing in Helix this winter. Miss Blanche Johnson had an opera tion for the removal of her tonsils this week. She is in the hospital at Walla Walla. Mrs. David Stone returned home this week after spending several weeks with relatives in Walla Walla The Methodist Ladies' Society will hold a cooked food sale in the lobby of the Athena Hotel, Saturday after noon, March 9. With the exception of a few patches, which mark the places of drifts, snow on Main street has al most disappeared. Mrs. Will Kirk, Mrs. Frank De Freece, Mrs. Lloyd Michener and Harold Kirk visited Mrs. Alma Ryan m Walla Walla Friday. Mr. and Mrs. Will Kirk and Mr, and Mrs. Lloyd Michener attended the Knights of Pythias banquet at Pen dleton, Monday evening. Mrs. Paul Lieuallen and little daughter Pauline came from Adams Wednesday and spent the day at the red Pinkerton home in Athena. Marion Dixon who has spent the winter months at the Athena Hotel left Wednesday for Lowden where he will be employed on the Jack Martin ranch. Mrs. Victoria Gholson is reported to be improving since she was re moved to a hospital in Walla Walla Mrs. Gholson has been ill for several weeks. Mr. and Mrs. George Brace came from Thorn Hollow Sunday, and spent the day at the home of Mr, and Mrs. W. E. Campbell, south of Athena. Mr. and Mrs. Tom Kirk came over from their home on Dry Creek Wed nesday, and spent the day at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Kirk in Athena. The W. C. T. U. will meet at the home of Mrs. Otho Reeder on Tues day, March 5th, at 2 o'clock. Mrs. Barney Foster will lead the program for the afternoon. : :: Clarence Barney, who is staying on the Will Kirk place, south-east ' of Athena reports that considerable snow has melted in that vicinity, but much yet remains. A large and appreciative audience attended the full measure entertain ment at the Christmian church, Tues day evening. Receipts for the eve ning were satisfactory. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton and children, who were at the J. W. Pink erton home in Athena during the cold weather, have retursed to their farm home west of town.' Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Hill entertain ed at dinner Sunday, Mr. and Mrs Maurice Hill and daughter Margaret of Walla Walla, and Mr. and Mrs. B, B. Richards and son Roland. Baseball mitts have appeared in Athena and the notes of a meadow lark have been heard: indicating that "Spring has arrive," to quote the words of one of the Press man s kid friends. Barney Foster delivered a consign ment of beans to a Pendleton firm, Wednesday. Mr. Foster grew white beans of superior quality on four acres of, his land south of Athena, last season. The Athena Study Club held a very enjoyable meeting last Friday at the home of Mrs. Harold Fred rick. The next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Lee Meyers on March 8. Rev. Wilbur of Hood River is or ganizing a Sunday school at Thorn Hollow. Rev. Wilbur will be at Thorn Hollow again March 10, when organization of the school will be completed. A number of Athena people motor ed to Milton Sunday evening and at tended the meeting at the Christian church there, which was conducted by Pastor Drill of the Pendleton Christian church. , Mrs. Joyce, sister of E. C. Prest- bye, who was recently operated on for relief from appendicitis ' at Walla Walla, is able to be out again. Mrs. Joyce has been at the Prestbye home for several weeks. Wilber Harden was in Walla Walla Sunday to visit his mother who is in the hospital there. It was found necessary to have a trained nurse to take care of Mrs. Harden, since she is not improving. Warm, southerly winds have melt ed the snow gradually in Athena.. In the surrounding neighborhood, much of the ground remains covered, how ever, with the moisture finding its way into the soil. Fred Pinkerton has been ill for the past ten days. It was found neces sary to remove him to Walla Walla to the hospital for treatment for several days last week. He is re ported to be improving. The Rebekahs held their usual meeting at the lodge hall Tuesday night Afterwards Mrs. A. M. Logs don and Miss Velma Schubert served a delicious two-course luncheon; at the home of Mrs. Logsdon. The Walla Walla Union announces the issuance of a marriage license to N. A. Miller of Athena, and Mrs. Lisle of Weston. No particulars of the wedding were obtainable for this week's issue of the Press. Mrs. Edith Lumsden of Portland was a guest of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Wood over the week-end. Mrs. Lums den is leaving for an extended visit in Florida the last of this week. She is accompanied by Josephine Lavender. Frozen pipes at the Hoffman car- age resulted in water filtering into the gasoline service tank, there this week. Fortunately but a small quantity of gasoline was in the tank when the leak was discovered, at the instant the tank was to be refilled. The Methodist Ladies' Societv met at the home of Mrs. C. Athena motorists who have ven tured off the highway or paved streets have encountered difficulty m return ing to a solid footing, since the frost has left the ground the roads seem to be bottomless and mere chains do not always prove a sure safe-guard against the slushy conditions. The fpntnre of the affair was a beautiful birthday cake ladden with blue can dles, which was cut by the honoree. Those enjoying the hospitality of Mr. and Mrs. Bannister were. Mr. and Mrs. C. L. McFadden, Barbara, Rillv and Ravmond Mcfadden, Leon ard Geissel, Harold Kirk and Carolyn Kidder. A most successful entertainment was given at the Christian Church Tuesday evening under the auspices of the "Loyal Gleaner's" class. Ad mission nrices were sroverned by waist measurements of the audience. SDlendid program of readings and musical numbers was presented. One of the features of the evening was a 'farce-comedy" "Cinderella" in which M. Eager took the leading part. Garth Pinkerton and Carl Calvert impersonated the jealous sisters. A group of "real" minstrels sang plan tation melodies and were well receiv ed by the audience. The sum f $28 was added to the class fund.
