THE PRESS, ATHENA, OREGON, MARCH 1, 1929 NEW SENATOR . Former Gov. Phillips Lee Golds borough of Maryland, Republican, who defeated his Democratic op ponent, William C. Brace, present senator from Maryland, for the honor of representing his state in the sen ate of the Seventy-first congress. . Poor Bandit! At one time when traveling In Tur key with Cornelius Vanderbilt, the late Chauncey M. Depew thought It a great Joke that the train ahead of theirs was held up by bandits and a well-to-do farmer captured for $5,000 ransom, while Vanderbilt's train was not Interrupted. . "Brigandage In Turkey needs reor ganization," he wrote home. "It ought to be put In the hands of a New York syndicate -and put on a businesslike basis." That Was Italy Various are the ways by means of which European countries made Im pressions on the minds of Americans traveling therein. After returning home from a trip to Europe, a Brook line woman was asked by a friend, "Did you go to Italy?" "Let me think." Then turning to her daughter she said, "Did we go to Italy, dear?" "Why, yes, mamma. It was in Italy that we bought those lovely silk stockings." Better Conduct Better conduct should be the first ideal of every man and woman ; It Is the most Important aid In living. This Is true not because better con duct Is recommended by religion, but because It Is recommended by Nntur. A man who behaves better in bis feeding Is rewarded; so is the man who behaves better in associating with his fellows, tn his business, In bis family affairs. Behave better is the one maxim that all should accept as the greatest in the world. B. W. Howe'i Monthly. Black Bedclothes Cure An unusual cure for Insomnia, sug gested by recent experiments. Miss Mildred Bateman Editorial With the inaumiration of Mr. Hoov er next Monday a new administration will be ushered in. Mr. Hoover has not fully decided on his cabinet, of whom we here in the farming coun try, are most interested in his choice of Secretary of .Agriculture. Jardine was a good Secretary of Agriculture. He didn't do much for the farmers, but otherwise he was filling his posi tion to the best of his ability. He nad his hands tied, in a way, because President Coolidee did not favor many of the plans put forward by Congress, for the betterment of tne farmers. Whom will Hoove choose for Secretary of Agriculture? Will it be a man who has lived in the East and whose experience in farm ing has entended to the growing of a window box? Or will- it be a man who has an interest in farming, who knows the conditions of the farm problems, and who will do his best to remedy them ? Hoover comes from California, a Western state, and he ought to favor the farmers by put ting in a man capable of helping the farmers, and Hoover ought to help him. not hinder him. There- are many men who desire this position. Will Hoover, select tne ngnt onei The Republican party was pledged to farm relief and we sincerely hope that they will live up to their pledge.
