That appears to be an allusion to a condition that has called out a protest from American grain grow ers. Freight rates on Canadian grain for export, both eastbound and west bound, are approximately one-half those charged by the American rail roads. Since the freight rate on exported grain fixes the price on all the grain grown, that Canadian advantage puts the American grain growers at a dis advantage and is a handicap to de velopment in the western United States. W. W. Harrah, prominent Umatilla county farmer, at the wheat confer ence recently held at Arlington pre sented a compilation of wheat ship ping rates as paid by the American farmers and the Canadian farmers. A great advantage is given Cana dian wheat growers over the grower this side of the line. By way of illustration, the rate from Pendle ton to Portland, 222 miles, as 11.1 cents per bushel; St. Louis to New Orleans, C97 miles, 10.8 cents per bushel. Arlington to Portland, 140 miles, 9.9 cents per bushel; Minne apolis to Duluth, 149 miles, 3.9 cents per bushel. Here is shown a marked discrepancy in rates affecting the west in favor of the mid-west and the south-eastern section of the United States, but a further discrepancy favors the Cana dian farmer over all. For instance, from Regina to Port Arthur the" dis tance is 780 miles and the rate is only 7.2 cents per bushel; from Calgary to Vancouver, 996 miles and the rate for that distance is but 12.6 cents per bushel. iA moonshine plant, the most com plete ever found in the state, valued at $15,000 was demolished by pro hibition agents near Newberg last week. And it may be wondered why a chance was taken on the investment of such a large sum in the illegal enterprise. But when it is remember ed the raided distillery was equipped for making 1000 gallons of 100 per cent moonshine every twenty-four hours, its sale at even $5 per gallon required but three 24-hour shifts to pay for the plant. As it had been in operation fourteen days, if run to ca pacity and the product disposed of at $5 per gallon, the still did $70,000 worth of business. Here is a modesty complex for you: The war department for months has been trying to get in touch with Sergeant James D. Long, one of the Alaskan flying expedition members to bestow upon him his country's gratitude in the form of a distinguish ed flying cross. He has been found in the fastness of New Hampshire by a postmistress. Long was discharged from the army in 1922, and even his mother did not know where he was. Actual organization of the Colum bia River Valley association was reached this week at Portland when a board of directors of eighteen per sons was elected with power to choose the president and other officers. The two hundred representatives present at the organization of the association expressed belief that the great river can become the major traffic artery of the western United States. The House jolted Governor Pat terson when it overrode his veto on tho two-judge bill affecting Mult nomah county, but the governor gets his chance on other bills after the legislature adjourns. All bills that came to the governor after Tuesday of this week, can be vetoed as suits his notion next week. o They're slashing women's gowns in Boston, but not in price, however. A socalled "subway slasher" has a pen chant for slitting women's dresses with a knife, which brings to mind that a few years back the bobbed hair fad was started by a crank who rob bed New York women of their tresses. Under the budget of the State Game Commission 43 percent of the annual revenue goes to the work of fish propagation. Game protective work and bounties receive 34 percent, game farms ten percent and admin istration and educational work thir teen percent. o Failure to keep both hands on the steering wheel, of his automobile, caused the machine to leave the high way and crash into a stump-, and Mi&f Evelyn Strope of Kellogg, Idaho, has brought a $10,000 damage suit against James DeFranks, the driver. - o ' J Theory vs. theories has brought the investigation of the Chicago gang massacre virtually to a standstill so far as developments are concerned, and results will probably stand at that. o Infant oysters are in transit from Japan.- They will be planted in Wil lapa Harbor, Washington. While the rest of us have been looking snowbanks in the face, Gold Beach in Curry county, has been revelling in sunshine, beach parties, etc. o Down in Southern Oregon kill-' deers have made their appearance along the streams, but up this way we kill deer in open season, only. o "Cabinet talk is revived with the return of Hoover," says one news paper, while another observes, "when was ever cabinet talk dead?" Being in the public eye is not a bed of roses, so to speak. Jack Dempsey was a target for a shot from 'a Miami gangster. o After keeping tab on the weather. China is again giving other nations something to think about. Foley's Kidney Cure ake kidney?, nrxf V. .' rh'hi Wrong Idea About Birds The habits of some Porto Rlcan birds give rise to rather curious beliefs among the natives, writes Doctor Wetmore of .the Smithsonian Institu tion. Discussing the brown pelican or alcatrnz, he says: "Native fisher men relate gravely that, when the alcatrnz grows old and feeble, rather than suffer death 'by starvation it commits suicide by hanging itself by the head from the fork of a mangrove or a crevice between two stones. Those familiar with the clumsiness of the great birds can readily under stand that this belief arises from ob servation of individuals that slip and ore caught so that they cannot escape." Dahlia of Mexican Origin Dahlia history commences in 1791. when Cavanllles, the director of the Botanic garden of Madrid, Spain, de scribed the flowering of a set of dahlia roots received In 1789 from Vicente Cervantes of Mexico. Dahl ias first reached England In 1798 through the agency of the marchioness of Bute. This had little effect on the history of the plant, however, as all these plants perished from a lack of proper understanding of their needs. They were reintroduced successfully in 18W, through the interest of Lady Holland. Vindication A dignified-looking man stopped at a news-stand and purchased two very conservative newspapers and an ex tremely liberal literary monthly. He paid for them, but after a mo ment's hesitation asked In addition for a certain monthly bearing a de cidedly zippy title. He must have sensed something of the Inconsistency of his purchase, and felt that some kind of explanation was due, even to so unllterary a fel low as the particular news dealer In question: "Er I hope," he said, as he laid down the necessary earn for the mag azine, "that you don't think I read this paper. I am just a contributor." Kansas City Times. NOTICE OF FINAL ACCOUNT In the County Court of the State of Oregon for Umatilla County. In the Matter of he Estate of Solista N. Pickett, Deceased.
