The motor truck-derrick combina
tion in cattle rustling procedure
seems to be getting the upper hand of
cattlemen in some parts of the state,
where trucks outfitted with a derrick
contraption, rolls off the highway and
their thieving drivers slaughter
choice beeves and cart them away for
sale to unscruplous dealers. Oregon
stockmen are asking the legislature
to pass a bill that will give them pro
tection against cattle rustlers, more
stringent than any law now in effect.
It is suggested by some that it be
made compulsory for both wholesale
and. retail dealers in meats to be
licensed and held strictly to record of
all meats and meat producing animals
purchased. Another proposal ad
vanced for the protection of the
stockraiser is that market dealers
buy no meat or animals that cannot
be properly identified by a system of
marking or brands. There is no
doubt that the net profit of stock
men in some districts have been ser
iously curtailed by the new butcher
ing thievery.

Wholesale grade crossing changes
would cost millions, entailing a
stupendous tax, and in the end the
reduction in number of automobile ac
cidents would be chocked only in ratio
to the crossing changes made. The
proposal is tomfoolery in light of the
fact that automobile drivers them
selves are solely responsible for grade
crossing accidents. If drivers of ears
exceeding railway train speed, would
exercise one-half the care and atten
tion to common hazards of speed and
control the locomotive engineer does,
grade crossing accidents would be re
duced to a minimum. An engineer
does not run past signals, the car
driver makes it a common practice to
do so. An engineer would be either
drunk or insane who would not slow
his engine down to absolute control in
rounding a sharp curve, but the chap
who gets a "thrill" in taking chances
at the steering wheel, will shoot head
on over a "blind" crossing, and feels
all the better if his exploit is illumi
nated by the rays of the oncoming
headlight. Common sense behind the
steering wheel is what is wanted, not
a tax burden for construction of
grade crossings.

Roy 0. West, President Coolidge's
appointee for secretary of the inter
ior has been confirmed by the senate,
after three days discussion of his
nomination in secret session. Mr.
West may be an ideal choice for the
cabinet position, so why handicap
him with a mantle of unnecessary
secrecy over his appointment? In
his acceptance of this public office,
one of the most important in the
cabinet, the public has the right to
knowledge of all details pertaining to
his appointment. The method of his
confirmation has deviated from the
usual open procedure of the senate,
and this fact is likely to interfere
with Mr. West's official capacity, in
that the public has been keyed up to
the point of attention by the squab
blo over his selecion for the place.

Enoch Bagshaw, erstwhile coach of
the Washington Huskies seems to
have bagged a deadlock between the
athletic faculty and the board of con
trol, as the result of the proposed de
thronement of the Washington coach.
"Baggy" seems to have the good will
and support of the football team and
the athletic enthusiasts of the Uni
versity, but is "rouse mitt him" with
the board.
Not all members of the Mussolini
family are politicians. Arnaldo Mus
solini, brother of the dictator, has re
fused to become candidate for deputy
in the coming elections in Italy; pre
fering no doubt to be a big duck in
his own little puddle rather than a
little due in his brother's big pond.
When it comes to eating, Marshal
Foi-h is of opinion that Napoleon
knew what ho was tnlking about
when the Corsican said, "a soldier
fights upon his stomach." Another
loaf of black bread and a bottle o'
wine, please.

Judy will entertain the members of
the skating club at the rink tonight.
Mr. and Mrs. W. D. Parker are
down from St. Johns, Wash., on a
visit to relatives and friends. " Mr.
Parker recently recovered from an at
tack of gripp.
J. P. O'Connor, formerly engaged in
the life insurance business, is in the
city, selling stock in a wireless tele
graph company.
Miss Sylvia Beathe has returned to
her duties as saleslady in the Mos
grove Mercantile store, after a few
days absence on account of sickness.
Miss Norma Smith, who has been
ill for two weeks, is now convales
cing. The young lady's sickness was
a complication of measles and la
grip.
Elmer Connick has returned from
a business visit at Waitsburg, Wash.
Mrs. Connick will leave soon for a
visit of several weeks with her mother
there.
Henry Dell is learning the art of
making his own taffy, under the di
rection of Dr. Heisley, and soon at
Dell Bros.' establishment will be on
sale these famed confections.
Postmaster Githens has improved
the interior of the post office to some
extent. Wire lattice work has been
put, around the top of the office in-
closure, extending up to the ceiling.
Hissoner, Justice of the Peace,
Richards, was called upon to perform
a marriage ceremony Saturday eve
ning, shortly after the arrival of the
Pendleton-Walla Walla mixed train.
The happy couple were made one in
short order by the obliging Justice,
and proceeded on at once, their desti
nation being North Yakima. The
contracting parties were Thos. Potts
and Miss Mary Fuller of Echo.
