Long Eyelashes Joy of Poet and Artist There are two sorts of long eye lashes, those that turn up and those tuut droon downward. The first anrt have the charm that conies from that delicious curl that lends piquancy, to the eve. while the others add as much to the eye by shading It and making u seem darker, more mysterious and more luminous. So whichever sort of long lashes you have you may be satisfied from the point of view of beauty. How ever. It is said that tlinRn thnr. turn UP betoken trood health, while those tnat droop are more often possessed by persons of delicate health, and in dicate melancholy. Almost all noets and artists are agreed In nralslnc lone lashes. Lnlel. no, the famous Italian Renaissance writer says "lashes should be long and black as Indian ebony," but on the other band, another Italian writer on feminine beauty savs "the lashes should be thin and not overlong nor would I have them very black, which makes the gaze fierce." Balzac could also see beontv In short lashes, for of the charming Caniille In "Beatrix" be says, "The lasnes ore short, but as black and thickest as the hair of an ermine's tall." Picture Writing Led to Modern Alphabet Writing in Its earliest development was ideography or picture writing. It comprised a series of pictures repre senting first a thing and secondly an idea. In the next stage of progress most of the lines of a recurring pic ture would be left out, until one stroke might at last come to repre sent perhaps a Hon or the idea of hunting. The writing of some of the peoples of today Is merely a continua tion of such picture writing. Amone other races the picture writing grad ually developed into a combination of sounds to form the alphabet, and this type of writing has been set down in all sorts of ways. Each people devel oped its own alphabet, Eastern people for the most part writing, as we would say, backwards, 1. e., from right to left ; or downward ; while our own branch of the human race which has developed the "cursive" style of writ ing In which each letter can be Joined to the next without lifting the pen, find writing from left to right the most convenient method. Toad's Eggs Hatched on Back of Mother Among, the 80 species of toads known there is one, the water toad of Central America, which presents many curious and Interesting features. These toads employ a strange way of hatching their eggs. Most species lay their eggs In the creeks or ponds and leave them there until they are hatched. The plpa of Central Amer ica lay theirs in the water the same as the other species, but as soon as they are laid, the father lifts them up and literally plants them la the back of the mother toad. There they re main, until they hatch. The skin of the mother toad becomes unusually thick and soft at this season of the year. Each egg occupies a separate round cell chamber, which later, by the pressure of each cell against the other, takes the shape of a honeycomb cell. Elgbty-two days elapse before the batching of the eggs. They re main in the back of the mother toad during this entire period. When they begin to batch, they present a curious sight Lawyer's Advlct fie strolled Into a club In which be lind managed to gain admission as a niemlMT.
