A new door adorns the Main street

The Study club is holding the first
meeting of the new year at the home
of Mrs. F. B. Boyd this afternoon.
Mrs. S. J. Bowles came over from
Walla Walla and spent the week with
her daughter, Mrs. F. S. LeGrow.
The new basketball court at Scout
hall is being utilized by troop mem
bers since it was completed last week.
Mrs. Stella Keen accompanied Mr.
and Mrs. Glenn Steen to Lewiston
where they were Christmas guests of
relatives.
The Lyle Gray family west of town,
who were most seriously ill last week
with the flu, are reported on the road
to "recovery.
Athena students who spent the holi
days at their home here, have depart
ed for their various schools to. resume
their studies.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Meyer spent the
Christmas holidays with relatives in
the Willamette valley, returning to
Athena, Monday.
Ray Hansell came up from The
Dalles this week and is a guest of
his brother, M. W. Hansell and
family near town.
Mr. and Mrs, Harold Frederick re
turned to Athena Monday from Pull
man, Washington, where they spent
Christmas with relatives.
Mr. and Mrs. Sterling Parris visit
ed Mr. and Mrs. S. S. Parris in Wal
la Walla New Year's day. Mr. S. S.
Parris i3 ill at his home there.
Mr. and Mrs. Will Piper have re
turned from Brownsville, where they
were recently called by the illness
and death of Mrs. Piper's mother,
Mrs. Kendig, of that city.
Mr. and Mrs. Robert Raymond of
Crook county, were here on a visit to
Mr. and Mrs. Cass Cannon for sever
al days. Bob is just now reaping his
reward for being in the cattle busi
ness. R. A. Duffield was called to Mc
Coy, Oregon, Wednesday on account
of the death of his father-in-law, F.
A. Rohde. Mr. Rohde died Tuesday,
and funeral services were held yes
terday.
Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Sanders are en
joying a splendid radio set, which
they received as a Christmas present
from their two sons, Frank and
Claud, and daughter, Mrs. Starr
Charlton. :
The infant daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton was brought
home from the hospital at Walla
Walla, the latter part of last week,
and is well on the road to recovery
at this time.
Miss Hazel McFarland came up
from Portland and spent Christmas
at the home of her parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Charles McFarland. She was
accompanied by Miss Carrie Dreher,
of Portland.
A number of farmers in this com
munity have been able to dispose of
surplus mules this week as several
carloads are being shipped to Kansas
City. Prices paid have been fair and
gives an outlet for extra stock. "
Eastern Oregon has had a real
demonstration of Webfoot weather to
usher in the first week of the new
year. As go the first three days of
January, so go the first three months
of the year, says the old saw, and
then it snowed.
Weston " Leader: Leonard Snider
and Irvin Tucker have come down
from the Snake river region to spend
the Christmas season at the home
fireside. They have been trapping
for fur along the Snake river above
Starbuck.
The family of George Gerking
west of town have all been afflicted
with the flu this week. Included in
the list who were down, was Mrs.
Gerking and Mr. and Mrs. Dean
Gerking, who were visiting there. All
are better at present.
Mr. and Mrs. Claud Sanders were
up from Portland and spent Christ
mas with relatives here. The family
dinner was served at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Starr Charlton, the
hostess being assisted by her daugh
ters, Roma and Alberta.
Ronald Kretzer came down from.
Joliet, Montana, and spent Christmas
with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lou
Kretzer, at The Dalles. He came
to Athena and visited friends here
the latter part of last week. Mr.
Kretzer is teaching in the high school
at Joliet.
"Harold Teen" the sparklipgest,
laughingest comedy of the whole
year of 1928 will be shown at the
Standard Theatre tomorrow night.
Sunday night the Standard offers
Paramount's fine picture, "Just Mar
ried," starring Ruth Taylor and
James Hall.
Jack Perry, pastor of the Christian
church in Athena, will leave next
week for O'Dell, Oregon, where he
will hold a series of protrac' l
meetings. During his absence his
pulpit will be filled by Pastor Tor
genson, of Milton, who will hold Sun
day morning serviecs.
Mr. and Mrs. T. P. DeFreece serv
ed a family dinner New Year's day.

Weston Leader: During the wind
storm Tuesday night John Lumsden
drove his Chrysler coupe through the
railing of the highway bridge- on
North Water street, and into fine
creek. The railing was demolished
and a water mam broken, but Mr.
Lumsden escaped injury. The coupe
itself suffered considerable damage.
Miss Esther Berlin was hostess on
Christmas eve to the Wauna camp
fire girls and a number of school
boys who assisted in singing Christ
mas carols. After singing carols
early in the evening, the party
gathered at the Berlin residence
where refreshments were served.
Mrs. Berlin was assisted by Miss
Hilda Dickenson, Mrs. Ralph Mc
Ewen and Miss Dorothy Berlin.
Ralph Grover. employed on the A.
A. Mclntyre place west of Athena,
came to town the other evening, and
in parking his car on Main- street
struck the lamp post standing near
the Masonic hall. The iron post was
moved from its concrete base and had
its globe shattered. The street was
slippery and the brakes on the car
failed to hold. Ralph reported he
accident at once, and the damage
was slight.
Members of the Athena Bridge club
were charmingly entertained Friday
when they were bidden to luncheon at
the home of Mrs. Lloyd Michener.
Following luncheon, bridge was en-
byed, three tables playing. Mrs. ti.
I. Watts won high score, Mrs. Bert
Logsdon, guest prize and Mrs. Ralph
McEwen the consolation. Additional
guests were Mrs. Laurence Pinker-
ton, Mrs. Arthur Douglas and Mrs.
Bert Logsdon.
Clarence Hand circulated a sub
scription paper in Athena this week
for relief of the Downer family, the
members of which lost their house
hold possessions and clothing in the
fire which destroyed the farm house
in which they were residing on the
Koepke place, south of Athena, last
week. The sum of $40 was subscrib
ed on Mr. Hand's list and other con
tributions made will augment the
total to about $75.
Christmas bells and greens decked
the C. L. McFadden home Friday eve
ning when the Jolly Twenty club gave
their annual holiday party. The
committee in charge included, Mrs.
Arthur Douglas, Mrs. Max Hopper,
Mrs. James Lieuallen, Mrs. Laurence
Pinkerton and Mrs. Bert Logsdon.
Bridge occupied the guests during
the evening, seven tables being in
play. Mr. and Mrs. James Lieuallen
won high score and Mr. and Mrs.
Fred Gross received the consolation
prize. A two course supper was
served at a late hour. Mr. and Mrs.
Ralph Cannon of Walla Walla motor
ed here for the event.
Mrs. Ethel Montague entertained
Saturday night with a five hundred
party when five tables were at play.
Mrs. Clifford Walker held high score
for the ladies and Mr. A. A. Mcln
tyre held high score for the men.
Clifford Walker won the consolation

sized in the decorations by the use
of red bells, and tapers in the same
shade. Guests sufficient to make up
five tables, were present and bridge
was the diversion of the evening un
til the coming of the midnight hour
when New Year's greetings and good
wishes were exchanged. A delicious

The Wauna campfire girls held a
ceremonial meeting at the home of
Nylene Taylor Thursday evening of
last week. Valerie Cannon, Lorra
Ross and Velma Ross had charge of
the meeting. The holiday spirit was
carried out with Christmas songs
and games. Several hundred honor
beads were presented. The girls who
won Wohelo at summer camp re
ceived their leather honors. After
the ceremonial meeting, Nylene Tay
lor acted as a charming hostess for
the Christinas party. The Taylor
home was beautifully decorated with
gay Christmas festoons and wreaths.
The central attraction was a beauti
ful big Christmas tree, loaded with
gifts of candy and noneorn balls for
each girl present. Delicious refresh
ments were served by Mrs. Sheldon
Taylor, assisted by Nylene Taylor and
Marjorie Douglas. Ezma Hiteman
and Jean Zerba, members of Wauna
group, who are attending out of
town schools, were present, and the
guests were Mrs. T. D. Taylor and
Miss Mary Williams of Portland, and
Mrs. W. E. Campbell.

The new basketball and equipment
received the initial breaking in this
week and the prospects are that the
hall and facilities will be appreciated
and used by the community boys.
Asst. Scoutmaster LeRoy is back
on the job again after a weeks so
journ, at the Veterans Hospital in
Walla Walla for treatment tor sinus
infection.
There are a few of the boys that
haven't paid their fifty cents regis
tration for the ensuing year and we
wish they would take care of this
soon, as we have already forwarded
the names to national headquarters.
We sure appreciated the work and
support Wm. Campbell has given to
the troop, especially towards the
basketball court. He worked sever
al days and used his truck and one
of his men part of the time. The
netting and wire that would have
cost several dollars that wasgiven to
the troop by the hardware store was
also greatly appreciated and we wish
to thank Bill Campbell and Chance
Rogers for making the early comple
tion of the hall possible.
Chance Rogers is the new troop
committee chairman and with his
eleven other workers will control the
troop for the coming year.
There will be the regular troop
meeting next Tuesday evening and
lets have all the boys and officials out
that can get there. Meeting will
start at seven and those who care
to, can leave at eight thirty.
