One copy, one year W-00 One copy, six months it One copy, three months Athena, Oregon, December 14, 1928 TREATMENT OF INFLUENZA Concerning the treatment of in fluenza the following is taken from a recent report of the state board of health: Now that influenza is undoubtedly epidemic in this state, it is well to know how to treat this disease and how to control it. In a preceding letter. we warned the public of the possibility of an epidemic and gave a list of precautions to be taken to prevent the spread of this disease. Both the cure and prevention of in fluenza depend on knowing the cause. The best way to keep from taking influenza is to keep away from peo ple having this highly contagious disease. When you feel an attack of influen za coming on, take a laxative and a glass of hot lemonade and go to bed early. Eat lightly, drink water free ly and stay in bed until all symptoms have disappeared. Isolate yourself. Do not kiss or even shake hands. Jusfc because some one has passed this disease on to you is no excuse for your being careless. This is not a spectacular course of treatment nor will it produce striking results, but it will cut down greatly the chances for complications, such as pneumonia and other infections. The streptococus hemolyticus is usually unable to invade the healthy body but gains entrance in persons who are run down by influenza. Strep tococus pneumonia is a very serious complication and the chances of pull ing through after this infection has invaded the body are none too good. The, importance of calling in a phy sician early can not be too highly em phasized. Many of the complications of influenza can be prevented by proper treatment. For the sake of others it is well to remember that in fluenza is a contagious disease and it is up to you to keep it to your self. Use your handkerchief and prevent the Bpread of influenza. Sneezing and coughing spray out droplets of moisture loaded with germs and any one nearby is almost certain to get a good dose of this. If you have influenza, go to bed and isolate yourself. o ' AND HOW Casually reading of the European situation to be faced by the League Council which convened this week, makes one wonder what of the Lo carno spirit and how. Germany is openly pessimistic over results of the peuce pnet so long as her ter ritory remains occupied by allied troops; Mussolini in public speech proclaims that all the world is arm ing and Italy must be prepared. Failure of last week's conference at 'Geneva for the control and manu facture of arms is ascribed to the disinclination of certain European powers to reveal data concerning their armaments, which naturally arouses suspicion and dissatisfaction among countries which do not manu facture, but must buy arms abroad, and thus necessarily disclose their secrets of national defense. France grooms the privilege of no naval re striction whatever, and England wants the inside track on cruiser con struction. Here at home, Uncle Sam is chawing his tobacco a little finer while he keeps count of Britain's cruiser tonnage, and last week when Kellogg appeared in the senate nurs ing the latest effort toward preven tion of war, instead of receiving the glad hand all ho got was a few mum bles over "reservations" and a frosty bath. It is easy for one to becomo susceptible to calls from the wild and contract the habit of rusticating in places other than one's own home town. That conservative Cal has caught the bug that tolls men away from their desks to ramble in paths that lead to golf links, fishing trips and hunting grounds is disclosed in his advocacy of the serious need of a summer white house for use of the executive family, to be located some where in the hills near the national capitol. o The king of the liritains has made a brave light to survive tho ravages of a critical illness and his subjects have proven loyalty to him by their marked solicitude for his welfare, and their prayers for his recovery. The world knows King Gcorgo for a kindly sovereign and a ruler whose traits of character symbolize liber ality to a greater degree than is t-hown by other hereditary rulers. and beaten, and fell only after a ter rific struggle. A concensus of opinion is that the woman is dead. It is barely possible that Bolivia and Paraguay are staging hostilities for mere entertainment of President elect Hoover while he is taking his South American jaunt. However, any warfare these peppery republics may decide to pull off, would be sideshows in comparison with what Hoover has seen before.
