Old London Church The old parish church of St George the Martyr In London is visited by many because of its association with Charles Dickens, who made reference to it in his stories several times. Dp to the Eighteenth century it was the custom for the bell of the church to be tolled as a signal for fires to be put out, cattle lockea up and appren tlces sent home. Malefactors who died or were executed at King's Bench prison often found their last resting placo In St. George's crypt One of them, Richard Banks, executed in 1610, was taken to St George's in the belief that he was dead. ' After being three hours in the vestry, "he did re vive again," whereupon he was taken back to the prison to suffer a second execution. The present church was built In 1734, and stands oa the site of the first one. Lawyer V$. Witnesa A lawyer recently engaged in trying a case asked one of the witnesses his name. The witness gave it but the lawyer did not catch it He repeated the question, and the-man on the stand promptly repeated the answer. Still falling to get any clear idea of the name, the lawyer demanded, rath er impatiently, that the witness spell his name. He did so, saying, "O-dou-ble t-l-double you e-double-l-double yon-double o-double d." The spelling confounded the attor toruey; and, amid the laughter in the courtroom, he quietly conducted the witness to one side, and learned that his name was "Ottlwell Woodd." Grinning by the Day There's a girl out our way who makes up her face and lets her com plexion set every morning around a bright "and engaging smile. All day long she smiles and smiles, because that's her frescoed expression and she's bound to hold It We'd like to be around when that smlle-a-whlle girl gets good and mad some day. If she ever loses that sunshiny grin her face will simply go all to pieces. It Is to be said for the fixed simper that It is better than a scowl, however, difficult as It may be to smile a kal somined smile by the day. Fayette Journal and Courier. Cultivated Gracefulness It used to be part of the education of every liuiopeun princess likely to hold prominent .place In affairs of state to leurn to "tenls cercle" that is, to learn how to make the round of a group of ladles and gentlemen of the court saying something agreeable to each. Empress Augusta of Germany, grandmother of the last of the Ger man emperors, wlio was noted for her tact, had had lessons in this im portant duty in the gardens of the palace at Weimar. There on pleasant days the young girl, under the direc tion of her governess, often had to go the rounds, stopping before each bush or tree, casting on each a gracious smile and making some Ingratiating remark to each. Mazer and Measles Old wooden drlnklng-bowls, known as mazers, appear to be becoming In creasingly popular among wealthy col lectors. One of these bowls fetched as much as $50,000, and it is rare to find one in good condition, and with a pedigree at less than 500. The words "mazer" and "measles," by the way, are said to be derived from the same German word "maser," meaning spot, the spotted portion of maplewood being the favorite mate rial employed In the making of these bowls. Rovers of Caribbean The sea-song of the pirates with Us weird refrain of "Fifteen men on the dead man's chest" which Robert Louis Stevenson Introduces into his famous book "Treasure Island" Is In part at least authentic and was sung by the pirates and buccaneers who roved the Caribbean sea In the late Seventeenth and early Eighteenth centuries. Dead Man's Chest was an Island of the Vir gin group, which has been christened "Dead Chest Island," thereby losing much of Its piratical flavor. To this Island the pirates used to repair, to careen their ships, stretch their legs, drink rum, sing their buccaneering songs and make merry after their own fiishlpn. Curiously enough there Is a little church on the Chilean coast which Is obviously built of ship's Um bers. Uecently a traveler of an In quiring mind, reasoning that if the church were built of ship timbers, the bell would also come from a ship, determined to Investigate. A climb among the rafters did not reveal the name of the ship, as he had hoped, but around the edge of the bell were in scribed the words: "Fifteen men on the dead man's chest" All that the clergyman knew was that the church bell cnme from a ship that was wrecked In 1722, which was Just the time when the West Indies were get ting hot for pirates, and many were being driven into the Pacific. Odd Forms of Prayer for Parching Fields Many countries hold odd ceremonies to end drought The Chinese take their dragon god around in a proces sion, and beat him soundly when lie. Ignores their prayers for rain. The Bantus of Delagoa bay sing songs at their drled-up wells and make moth ers, who have twins carry the children around the parched fields. In Greece they send children marching round all the wells and springs, under the lead ership of a girl adorned with flowers, who sings at, each halting place. The same custom prevails in Yugo-Slavla, where a little girl called the Dodota is clothed from bead to foot in grass and flowers, and leads her compan ions through their native village, stop ping at each house, so that the house wife may pour a pail of water over her, and singing the good news that the rain has come, even though It Is usually far away. "Traveling Stoned f "Traveling stones," from the ize of a pea to 6 Inches in diameter, are found In Nevada. When distributed upon a floor or other level surface within 2 or 3 feet of one another they immediately began to travel onward, toward a common center, and. there He huddled like a clutch of eggs in a nest A single stone, removed to a dis tance of 3 feet, upon being released, at once started with a wonderful and somewhat comical celerity to join Its fellows. These queer stones are found in a region that Is comparatively level and little more than bare rock. Scattered over this barren region are little basins, from a few feet to a rod or two in diameter, and it is In the bot tom of these that the rolling stones are found. The cause for the strange conduct of these stones is doubtless to be found In the material of which they are composed, which appears to be lodestone or magnetic iron ore. Natural Query The stroller happened to be present one evening when a young hopeful of six years returned home after a bard day's play and received a quarter left by his grandmother, who had called to see blm, but who, fearing the night air, as grandmothers do, had had to leave before his return. The boy had heard grown persons talk about "when the old lady Is gone Junior will get quite a sum," and al ways when she came to see him she had placed a dime in the chubby spendthrift band. He stood with the quarter almost covering his palm, then looking up with great mysterious eyes, asked in awed tones: "Is she died?" Philadelphia PudIIc Ledger. Earth's Big Bulge As the earth's crust is by no means rigid It rises and falls under the grav itational attraction of the moon and sun In a manner similar to that of the ocean's tide. Various difficulties have so far prevented exact measure ments. The pressure exerted on spots of the earth's crust by the rising tide of the ocean Is another thing that makes it heave and fall Atlantic tides have caused an observed earth bulge 800 miles away, and It U thought probable that this influence! girdles the world.
