Press Paragraphs "Two Arabian Knights" Standard Theatre, tomorrow night. Charles Russell was in Athena from Freewater, Wednesday. The sale held by II. M. Saulsberry Wednesday was well attended. Mrs. George Bannister, Jr., spent the week with relatives in Walla Walla. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph N. fecott of Pendleton, were in Athena Saturday evening. Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Radtke return ed Sundav from Eugene and Port land, where they spent a week. Mrs. Penn Harris has been visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. Yen ny, at Walla Walla, this week. Mrs. William McBride of Portland, spent a portion of the week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles JJetts .Tack Cunninerham. salesman of Frigidaires, and Delco Light plants, was In town Tuesday from Pendler ton. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Henry spent Saturday in Walla Walla, visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alt John son. Mrs. Paul Lieuallen and little daughter have arrived at their home in Adams, from St. Anthony's hos pital in Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. James Twohy, re turning from the East to their home in Portland, spent Monday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Boyd. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Booher with Mr. and Mrs. Jess Booher of Coeur D' Alene, Idaho spent Monday with Mr. and Mrs. Jake Booher in Pendle ton. Athena friends of Mr. and Mrs. Murray D. McLean (Lois Swaggart) of Seattle, will be interested to learn that they are the parents of a daugh ter. Mrs. McLean formerly resided here. Mrs. Henry Barrett returned Sun day from Portland, where she visited relatives. Her . mother, Mrs. A. B. McEwen has left Portland for Cali fornia, where she will remain for the winter with her daughter, Mrs. Jenkins. Guests of Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Walker at their home on Gerking Flat were, Mr. and Mrs. Jake Booher of Pendleton, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Richmond and Ralph, Jr., of Walla Walla, Mr. John Walker and Jen namae and Mr. and Mrs. William Potts. ' For a time the household of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Grey was one of excite ment and commotion, when Saturday morning the infant son swallowed a safety-pin. A physician retrieved the pin, and baby was soon 0. K. again. Mrs. Grey has given up the Gross residence on Fifth street, and has dis continued boarding school teachers. Miss Bateman and Miss Brodie are now at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Pinkerton, taking meals at the home of Mrs. Michener. See C. M. McPherson accompanied Joseph Srntt of Pendleton to his farm for a pheasant hunt, Wednesday. The Christian Missionary Society met Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. George Gerking. Mr. and Mrs. Edwin Thereon and daughter of Pendleton are visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Keaa Mrs. Matilda Grey, Mrs. Lawrence Pinkerton, Mrs. A. W. Douglas and Mrs. Sarah Gross were in Walla Wal la. Monday. Mr. and Mrs. H. W. LeRoy and children, and Mrs. Maud LeRoy and Mrs. Sarah Purvance spent Monday in Pendleton. Mrs. Lila Kirk and Mrs. W. Mo Pherson visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Austin Foss at Ferndale, Insh Thursday. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Clemons and family motored to Albion, Washing ton, for a few days visit with Mr, demons' mother, Mrs. R. M. McClure, Mrs. Mary Tompkins has been seriously ill the past week and will be taken to Hot Lake Sanitariam for treatment. The school children are enjoying a two-dav vacation this week. Yester day and today teachers are attending the annual institute a Pendleton, William Goff left Monday evening for his home in San Francisco, Call fornia, after spending a few days in Athena as guest of Miss Pearl Green. Miss Ethel Pittman will enter a business college in Seattle in a few weeks, to take a business course. Her position as cashier at the .standard Theatre, will be taken by Miss Arlene Myrick. Ernest L. Crockatt, well known in Athena, has purchased the interest of I. B. Bowen in the Baker Morning Democrat. Mr. Smalt retires after 50 years of continuous service, and 41 vears as editor of the Democrat. John Kirk was quite seriously iniured in a pileup during the Ath ena-Wa-Hi football game in Athena, last Friday. He is recovering from the effects of the injury, but will be out of the game for some time, at least. MrsT W. F. Anderson, sister-in-law of Mrs. M. L. Watts; Stanford And erson, a nephew, and son Stanford, Jr., all of Portland, are visiting this week at the Watts home. Mr. Ander son leaves soon for Australia, where for three years he will manage the interests of an American lumber firm. The annual county convention of the Women's Christian Temperance Union will be held on Friday at Helix. It will open at 9:30 a. m. Delegates at the convention will be from Pendleton, Helix, Adams.Rieth, Athena and Milton. Besidesi program features, a no-hostess luncheon will be served at the noon hour. The second fall meeting of the Ath ena Bridge Club occurred Friday at the home of Mrs. W. P. Littlejohn on Jefferson Street. Brilliant hued flowers were employed by the hostess as decorations and score cards blend ed with the color scheme. Club mem bers and guests sufficient for three tables were present. Mrs. C. M. Eager holding high score and Mrs. A. A. Kimball received the guest prize. Other guests of the club in cluded Mrs. Sarah Jane Bowles of Walla Walla and Mrs. C. L. McFad-den. Cleve Myers has taken over the Carsten shoe repair shop, and solicits the patronage of this community. Henry Dell, accompanied by his son-in-law. Armond DeMerritt, of Walla Walla, is in the mountains, hunting deer. Miss Lois Mclntyre will take a course at Walla Walla Business Col lege. Miss Mclntyre will enter that institution next week, The Otho Reeder residence on Third street, south of Main, Is being re painted. William Hendricksen, veteran painter, is wending the brushes, Mr. and Mrs. George Roller (Flor ence Gagnon) have purchased a farm near Albany, Oregon, and will move there from California, to reside, Mrs. Louise Keen, of Santa Cruz, California, has been visiting rela. tives in Athena and vicinity. Mrs. Keen is the widow of the late John Keen, Bert Ramsay, who delights in work- ine in his flower garden, brought to the Press office some very tine danlia specimens erown at his home on Third street. Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pinkerton are enioving a new Atwater-Kent receiv ing set which was recently installed in their home by Forrest zerua, tne local selling agent. Joseph Pavant of Weston, was in Athena Tuesday trading with local merchants. McFadden's Pharmacy time ago laid him up when afflicted with blood poisoning. The attack this time is not so serious and he ex pects to resume his work at the Standard Oil plant in a few days. Ray Jones is driving a new Chev rolet coupe. He is serving as relief mail carrier on route No. 2 out of Weston, in place of Ray Gordon, regular carrier, who is on a visit to relatives and friends in Middle West ern states. Mr. and Mrs. Ed Benn, formerly of Athena and Weston, are here on a visit to relatives and friends. Both Mr. and Mrs. Benn (Sylvia Beathe) were formerly employed in the Mos grove Mercantile Company store in Athena. -Portland came from that city Tues day evening and were entertained at the homes of C. L. McFadden and Ralph McEwen. The gentlemen of the party spent Wednesday shooting pheasants. Dr, Smith makes an an nual pilgrimage to Athena for pheas ant hunting. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Wood enter tained a pheasant hunting party at dinner, Wednesday noon. Guests were Marion Hansell and Glenn Dudley, Athena; Henry Collins, Guy Matlock, ad Frank Curl, Pendleton; Mr. Buchanan of Hillsboro, Mr. Alexander of Salem, Mr. Easter of McMinnville and Earl Snell of Arlington. The October meeting of the Cluis tian Missionary society was held Wednesday afternoon at the hospit able home of Mrs. G. R. Gerking west of town. A goodly number of ladies were tn attendance and an interest ing program given by the various members. Refreshments were served after, the devotional and business ses sions. Mrs. M. I. Miller is hostess this Friday afternoon, at her home on Adams street, to the Study club. In pursuance of the study of Oregon history, the subject will be the Dis covery of the Northwest Coast, with side readings and general informa tion. New members received at the meeting last week included: Mrs. M. W. Hansell, Mrs. Theresa Berlin, Mrs. Chase Garfield and Miss Bryant. Mrs. Johns, the hostess, was assisted in serving by Mrs. E. C. Rogers. Mrs. Glenn Dudley entertained in formally at bridge Wednesday after noon in honor of Mrs.C. H. Smith of Portland. The rooms were gay with asters, marigolds and petunias. Two tables were in play and honors were awarded to Mrs. C. L. McFadden, Mrs. A. A. Kimball received the consola tion. At the tea hour the guests en joyed a dainty salad and cakes. Be side the honor guest those from out of tdwn were Mrs. Alec Crank of Portland and Miss Dorothy Koepke of Glendale, California. Others pres ent were, Mrs. II. I. Watts, Mrs. C. L. McFadden, Mrs. A. A. Kimball, Mrs. R. B. McEwen and the hostess. The O. D. O. met last Friday after noon at the home of Mrs. Archie Mc lntyre. Fourteen members were present. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: Pres., Mrs. J. C. Walker; vice-Pres., Mrs. Lewis Stewart; Sec. and Treas., Mrs. Wm. Potts; Reporter, Mrs. Emmet Lee. A social hour followed the busi ness session at which time, Mrs. H. M. Saulsberry, who is leaving soon for Seattle to reside, was presented with a lovely gift. A dainty lunch eon was served by the hostess, assist ed by Mrs. Virgil Zerba and Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton. Anderson, Stanford Anderson and son of Portland, visited Wedesday at the home of Mrs. F. M. Anderson, at Walla Walla. Athena radios attracted large crowds of listeners when the first game of the world s series was re ceived yesterday, when the Yanks trounced the Cardinals to the tune of to 1. With the completion of a series of lectures in Illinois this month, Rev. J. M. Cornelison, for 26 years in charge of the Indian mission on the Umatilla reservation, will resume charge of the mission after an ab sence of two years. At a quiet wedding in the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Jackson Perry last Saturday morning, September 29th. Miss Marion McCambridge of Vale, Oregon, became the wife of Jody Laurence also of Vale. Mr. Laurance is a brother of Mrs. Clara Hope of this city, also a close friend of Mr. Perry. Mr. Laurence had witnessed other wedding ceremonies performed by Mr. Perry and decided that they were "tied" forever, so thought it a good plan to have him officiate at his wedding. Mrs. Victor Yeager of Baker, a sister of the gr,oom, ac companied the couple to this city on Friday evening. With "just married" signs and tin cans galore, the trio left immediately after the ceremony for Unity, Oregon, where the couple In honor of their house guests, Dr. and Mrs. C. H. Smith, and Major Mallory of Portland, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph McEwen entertained at dinner Wednesday evening. .The hostess served from a table decorated with roses in shades of pink and red, the guests being seated at small tables centered with red tapers. Bridge was played following dinner, Mrs. Crank, and Major Mallory receiving high score and Dr. "Crank and Mrs. Kim ball claiming the consolation.
