Miss Esther Berlin was a guest of friends in Pendleton the first of the week. Alpha Wood was over from Wes ton Tuesday, and called at the Press office. Amos O'Dell, Henry and Frank Miller fished in the Walla Walla river Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Penn Harris have re turned from a vacation trip to Wal lowa Lake. Ray Hansell was here from The Dalles this week visiting at the M. W. Hansell home. Cleve Stanton and Lee Wilson were in Pendleton Monday. Lee transact ed business in that city. Leon Kretzer left for The Dalles Wednesday, where he will visit his parents for a few days., Miss Margaret Herford of Steptoe, Washington, will teach the school in the District No. 2, this year. Mrs. Lillian Fredericks and Mi 3. Alpha Wood of Weston, visited Mrs. M. M. Johns Monday afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Smith of Salem, were in Athena this week visiting their son, Feron Smith and family. Roy Cannon and Louis Stewart were in Baker, Sunday visiting Mrs John Herr, mother-in-law of Mr. Stewart. Mr. and Mrs. T. P. DeFreece were over from Walla Walla Sunday. They have just returned from a sojourn at Seaside. Mr. and Mrs. John Stanton have moved to their home on Third street from the Walter Adams place east of town. Lester Stamper, of Weiser, Idaho, visited at the home of his aunt, Mrs George Myrick, Monday evening of last week. Mrs. A. L. McEwen and sons re turned last Friday from Portland where they visited her sister, Mrs. W. Mitchell. Jacob Demaris, Walla Walla rivjr pioneer and civil war veteran who cme west in 1865, died recently at the age of- 88. "Telling the World" Standard Theatre, Sunday night Louis Stewart left for Seaside Fri day of last week, where he will join his family. They will remain a weeK or two longer. Mr. and Mrs. Claire Gurney were over from near Baker, visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Little john this week. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Ames left Saturday for Pendleton, where they will reside, Mr. Ames being in the employe of Standard Oil. Mrs. Noami Dickenson, who is here from Milwankie, Oregon, visited this week at Milton, being the guest of her kinsman, Will Banks. The Pacific Power & Light company crew has been split, and part of it has moved its headquarters to Milton, the rest staying at Athena. Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Michener have moved into the Thompson residence on High street recently vacated by Mr. and Mrs. Clarance Zerba. Charles Kirk is having the tires on his feed racks set at Jens Jensens this week for the movie work which his outfit will have a part in. Mrs. Lester Richmond (Ruth Proebstel) was a gUest ,of Mrs. R. B. McEwen and other friends, from her home in Walla Walla last Friday. The meeting of the local W. C. T. U. will be held at the home of Mrs. 0. H. Reeder on Tuesday, August 28. Every member is urged to attend. Charles Dickey and family will go to Winchester, Idaho, about the first of September, where he will have a lucrative position in a lumber mill. Miss Blanche Thorsen of Standfield will teach the third and fourth grades in the Athena public schools, which will begin on September 4th. Francis Stamper of Walla Walla, is visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Penn Harris. He accompanied them to Wallowa river Saturday eve ning. A daughter was born to Mr. and Mrs. Dwight L. Hackett, in Eugene, on July 30. Mr. Hackett was form erly pastor of the Christian church in Athena. C. M. Jones Successor to J. L. S. T. Gore, contractor of walla wal la was in Athena Tuesday. He wa3 figuring on a new house to be built by Henry Keen on his farm north west of town. Mrs. Robert K. Norris (Hazel Sand ers) is here from her home at Med- ford, visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Sanders and sister, Mrs. Starr Charlton. Mrs. Frank DeFreece and Mrs. Will Kirk are in Walla Walla this week where they are at the bedside of their mother, who is critically ill in the hospital. Mrs. Lee Wilson and daughters Marjorie and Bernice accompanied by Mrs. Delbert Tate, of Helix, also a daughter, are spending the -week at Bingham Springs. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Lovelace re turned yesterday form a short visit with friends at Grangeville, Idaho. Mr. and Mrs. Lovelace expect to pend the winter in California. Solista Pickett has arnvea irom Montana, and will make his home with his sister, Mrs. E. C. Prestbye. He will enter the 8th grade of the Athena public school. Miss Helen Butler left Monday morning for her home in Dallas. She has been a guest of her aunt, Mrs. H. I. Watts, and has been much en tertained by her friends. Mrs. M. W. Hansell and daughter, Helen left Wednesday night Ly train for a few days shopping in Portland. They will be joined by Mr. Hansell, and return by automobile. Mrs. M. M. Johns was a guest Wednesday of Mrs. Victor Chastain, when she entertained a number of old friends at her home near State Line, at a one o'clock luncheon. Jimmie Hodgen is taking an en forced vacation from his duties with Standard Oil this week on account of one of iJob's comforters, which has attached itself to his foot. Arleen Myrick was in Walla Walla last week, to consult Dr. Gowan, an ear specialist. It was found that her ears were infected from getting water in them from swimming. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Jones motored to Walla Walla Thursday evening. Their son Donald, who has been vis iting at the home of his aunt, Mrs. H. Benson, returned with them. PhilliD Murtha motored to Bingham Sorines Saturday evening and joined his family, who have been camped there with Mrs. John Winn of Adams, They returned home Sunday evening. Helix Viewpoint: Miss Ruth Koth- rock who teaches in California is the guest of her sister Mrs. Hugh Lieu- allen for a few weeks. Miss Roth- rock is on her vacation. Mrs. Peter Mclntyre of Calgary, Alberta and Miss Sarah Fachna of Waterville. Wn., who have been guests at the home of Mrs. Catherine Potts and other relatives, left for Al berta Wednesday. Miss Delia Bryan of Coos River, Oregon, has been secured to. teach the primary grade in the Athena schools. She comes very highly rec ommended as a special primary teach er. Mrs. Rhoda S. McEwen, formerly of Athena but now residing in Port land, left Monday for San Diego California, being called there by the illness of her son-in-law. Dr. W. Jenkins. Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Wood and their house guest, Mrs. Edith Lums den. motored to North Powder Sun dav where they visited with Mrs Wood's sister. Mrs. Alex Shaw and Mr. Shaw. Mr.and Mrs. R. D. Elder, of Santa Rosa. California, who have been visit iner at Davton. spent Saturday and Sundav at the Ralph Singer home, proceeding on their way home early Monday morninsr. Miss Edna Thompson, who has been visiting at the home of her aunt, Mrs, J, W. Pinkerton, left Friday morning for her home near McLeod, Alberta, Miss Thompson is a teacher in a rural school near McLeod. Arthur Crowley is back in Athena after spending the harvest season at Endicott, Washington, with "Pike" Miller. Arthur spent 28 days in harvest in that country. He was em nloved as a sack lie. Lorain Shick was over from Walla Walla, Saturday. He has been help ing his father in the furniture store he recently purchased. In a short time Lorain will be employed in tne Punch Garage at Walla Walla. Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Willaby re turned to their home in Arlington, Monday after a visit with Mrs. Minnie Willabv here and the family ot virgn Willabv on Dry Creek. They had with them their little grand daughter, Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Eager are on a two weeks vacation and will spend a few days in Dayton visiting rela. tives before going to Portland, where they will spend the remainder of the time. Their daughters accompany them. The families of Sheldon Taylor, Bert Logsdon and Mr. and Mrs. Akin of State Line, spent last week at Wal lowa Lake. Mrs. Logsdon and Donna Jean remained for a longer stay, and the rest of the party have returned home. Miss Pearl Green won the popular lady prize given by the Medicine show which operated in Athena last week. It consisted of a beautiful beaded bag and over-night case. Miss Green is grateful to her friends who supported her. Guests at the E. A. Dudley cottage t Bingham over the week-end were Mr. and Mrs. Verne Dudley of Day ton, and Mr. and Mrs. Glen Dudley and son. With their guests they came down Monday and made an excursion to the mountains, in search of hutklo- ! berries.
