Lawrence Knight will go this week to Portland, where he will attend the Mohler Barber school. Mrs. W. H. Reeder is here from her home at Tacoma, visiting her son O. H. Reeder and family. Tom Mosgrove, Milton-Freewater merchant, was a business visitor in Athena Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. II. Wade LeRoy have moved to Mrs. Minnie Willaby's farm residence, west of Athena. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Jones are en tertaining Mrs. Charles May and daughter, of Ashland, this week. Mrs. M. J. Fletcher of Portland, is visiting at the home of her brother, W. W. McPherson, in Athena. "The Mysterious Lady" Standard Theatre, Sunday Night, Homer Watts and his threshing crew expect to complete a long and successful harvest season, tomorrow. Miss Esma Hiteman will spend the winter with her cousin, Mrs. Amiand de Merritt, attending school in Walla Walla. Jack Perry, pastor of the Christian church, finished his work Monday with the Floyd Pinkerton threshing crew. Floyd Pinkerton finished threshing his spring-sown grain west of town, Tuesday, obtaining a satisfactory yield. Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Barnes of Wes ton, spent Sunday night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Boyd in Athena. Mrs. Charles Kirk and daughter Areta will visit relatives and friends in the Willamette valley for a couple of weeks. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hand are employed on the D. T. Stone farm, west of Athena, taking up their duties this week. Miss Helen Butler of Dallas is a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Homer I. Watts. Miss Butler is a niece of Mrs. Watts. Born, to Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Knox, August 11, 1928, at Heppner, Oregon, a daughter. The little Miss has been named Cora Ann. Mrs. A. A. Kimball was hostess at a luncheon Wednesday, at her home in Pendleton, to which a number of Athena matrons were invited. Mr. and Mrs. 0. E. Venable have moved into the Arthur Shick resid ence on the West Side, vacating the Dell cottage on High street. Word was received by Mrs. J. F. Wilson from her son Roland, that he and Mrs. Wood arrived in Waukesha, Wis. August 4, after a very nice trip. Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dudley were down from Bingham this week and were accompanied back by Mrs. Nel lie Taylor who will spend the week there. Guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. R. A. Duffield this week were Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Rea of Portland, who were en route home after a trip to Crater Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Frazier are members of a party who are visit ing Crater Lake and other scenic points of Western and Southern Ore gon, this week. Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Zerba and son and daughter moved Tuesday to the C. L. Woodward farm west of Athena, where Mr. Zerba will assume the duties of ranch foreman. Mrs. F. B. Boyd and Mrs. M. M. Johns returned from Bingham Fri day last, where they spent a week with Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Dudley in their cottage at the Springs. Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Zerba, ac companied by Miss Lois Smith, left for Grants Pass yesterday by auto, to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles! Stockstill, parents of Mrs. Zerba. Mrs. Hammer, mother of Mrs. Arthur Rigby and Kyle Long, former well known residents of Athena, died suddenly at her home in Pendleton, Thursday night and was buried Saturday. , - - Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Perry ana children spent a portion of the week at Bingham Springs, where a con ference of the ministers of the Chris- i tian church of the county, is being held this week. Claude Sanders is here from Port land, visiting at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. D. H. Sanders. Claude is employed by an electrical firm at Portland, and is here on his annual vacation. The August meeting of the Chris tian Missionary society was held last Wednesday at the home of Mrs. Lew McNair. with about a dozen mem bers present. After the business and devotional session, refreshments were served. Lee Meyer, Superintendent of the Athena schools came up from Marsh field and spent a couple of days in Athena on school matters. He re turned to Marshfield and with his wife, will come to Athena about September 1. Mrs. Nellie Taylor, who recently moved from Pendleton to Walla Wal la to reside, has been visiting friends in Athena this week. Tuesday eve ning, Mrs. M. M. Johns entertained Mrs. Taylor and Mrs. Zeltha Mcln- tyre at dinner. Ralph Saling, who is at Weston from California, visiting relatives, and John Lumsden of that city, will make an automobile journey to the Atlantic coast and return. Mr. Lums den will visit at his old home in North Carolina, en route. Mrs. Jennie Gross and daughter. Mrs. Arthur Douglas, Marjorie and Aaron Douglas left yesterday on a motor trip to Whitefish, Montana, where they will visit Mr. and Mrs. Grant Prestbye. George Gross is the chaffeur for the party. Sabin Rich, well known in Athena, where he has refereed basketball games was recently united in mar riage to Miss Dorris Lay of Minne apolis. They will reside in Vallejo, California, where Mr. Rich is a di rector of physical culture. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Stockstill and Miss Thena Russell returned Friday evening from an outing trip to East Lake, near Bend. Mr. Stockstill had good success fishing m the lake for Rainbow trout, as a number of his Athena friends can attest. Beginning tomorrow evening, Mrs. Loraine Pinkerton will be at the piano in the Standard Theatre for the Saturday evening programs. Mrs. Pinkerton is an accomplished pianist, and the manager of the theatre is pleased to secure her services. Roland Richards is the owner of a new pony, which increases his herd to two. "Tommy" the Shetland is be- insr eiven a rest while-Roland is nd ing his new steed. The selection of a name for pony number 2 has not definitely been selected as yet, but "Pat" seems to be favored at present. Thursday of last week, at the meet ing of the Christian Aid society, a pleasant surprise was given the quilters when delicious refreshments were served by Mrs. Starr Charlton and Mrs. A. M, JohnBon, the ice cream being made by the former, and cake by the latter, making a combina tion difficult to surpass. Freciuent reports received by W. L. Rayborn from Portland indicate that Mrs. Rayborn continues to im prove says the Weston Leader. Ac cording to the special nurse in at tendance, her complete recovery is confidently expected. Mr. Kayborn returned Tuesday from a visit to the patient at Portland Surgical hospitaL The Weston Iader reports that J. M. Ashworth recently spent a few days at his favorite pasbme, fishing in the region of the Looking Glass and on Motette meadows. Jim took the limit in one hour from a Motette stream, so eager were the finny tribe to try his lure.
