Idea of Steam Engine
Dr. Frank H. Vizetelly, managing
editor of the Standard dictionary, says
the original steam engine was the eoll
pile at Nero, which was exhibited Id
the Serapeum of Alexandria In thf
year 150 B. C. The Serapeum Is the
great temple of Serapls, that stood
rear Memphis and was built over the
mausoleum of the Apis, or sacred bulls,
out in Egypt.

with a cylinder and piston was invent
ed by Denis Papin, in 1090. Ue was

give you an idea of what an Interna
tional thing the steam engine Is, let
me say that, although there Is no rec
ord of the use of steam expansion as
a propulsive power prior to the Sev
enteenth century, with the dawn of
this century an Italian, Giovanni Bat
tlsta della Porta, in a work of his on
pneumatics, suggested the principle of
steam condensation and consequent
suction, incorporated In his water
pump, in 1098, by Thomas Savery, an
English military engineer, who lived
from 1650 to 1715 and wrote on paddle
wheels.
"It was, as I have said before, in
1700 that Newcomen improved the
pumping engine, adopting the princi
ple of cylinder and piston found in
Papin's Invention, but this became en
tirely obsolete when, In 1709, James
Watt added a condenser separate from
the cylinder, and this made an enor
mous saving in the expenditure of

AUTO THEFT IS HARDER
More and More Cars Are Recovered
By the Police.
Chicago. Stealing an automobilo
and "getting away with it", is becom
ing harder every year, according to C.
A. Vane of the National Automobile
Dealers' association in announcing tho
result of a survey of automobile theftn
in 28 American cities.
A total of 95,083 cars were stolen in
the 28 cities last year, but of thin
number 87,186, or 91.7 per cent, were
recovered.
Newport, R. I., had the only perfect
record of all the cities. Thirty-six
cars were stolen and 36 recovered.
Detroit led the list of cities in both
the numbers of cars stolen and the
number recovered. The figures were
12,336 stolen and 11,000 recovered.

Makes tor Happiness?
In tho face of alarming Increases In
the divorce statistics the American
people are rapidly solving the prob
lem of how to be happy though mar
ried, In the opinion of Booth Tarklng
ton, the Iloosler author and philoso
pher. This developing solution of the
marriage problem, Mr. Tarklnston
thinks, may prove to be America's
greatest contribution to modern life.
"We can obtain statistics upon di
vorce, and probably could compile fig
ures estimating the number of sui
cides due to marriage," says Mr. Tark
lngton In the American Magazine, "but
It Is more difficult to set forth the true
proportion of really happy marriages.
"We only know that, no matter how
crazy the contract, most American
husbands and wives do get along with
each other, not always happily, but
with more or less harmony, more or
less conflict and a great deal of the
deepest devotion.
"Freedom Is the great essential ele
ment In a happy marriage. Without It
marriage Is a bondage.
"A woman neighbor, shaking her
head ominously, said of my friend
Sam's wife : 'She lets her husband go
out every night!'
"But this was a mistake; Sam's
wife and Sam do not 'let' each other
do anything not any more than one
lets a stranger choose which road he
will follow. They consult each other;
they do not ask or grant permissions ;
they enjoy liberty, equality and fra
ternityuniversal and Instinctive
ideals actually realized In their happy
marriage.

Chaplains' Seal
The device recently approved for
the Chaplains' school, Fort Leaven
worth, Kan., which Is to be used on
stationery, diplomas, mural decora
tions and so forth, has been described
as follows: The shield Is black, the
color or the facings of the Chaplains'
corps, and displays a torah, the sym
bol of the old law, over which is a gold
cross, the symbol of the new faith.
The shield and motto are displayed on
a pointed oval, the early shape of the
church seals, "produced by the Inter
section " of two equal circles each of
which passes through the center of
the other, producing that which lsf
true." In the space in the oval above
the shield la a ribbon scroll bearing
the motto, "The fear of the Lord Is
the beginning of wisdom." Around the
edge of the oval is the" legend, "The
Chaplains' School of the United States
Army."
Giving the Loser Comfort
The other day Governor Paulen
was called upon to make a decision on
some question presented to him. He
said he would take the matter under
advisement and was urged to make a
decision at once.
"Down in Fredonla we used to have
a Justice of the peace, Squire Wily,"
said the governor. "One day he had a
case and after all the evidence had
been submitted and the arguments
completed he announced he would
take the case under advisement.
"'Aw, what's the use doing that?'
said the lawyer. 'There Is only one
way to decide this case, so why not
do it and get It over with?
' 'Well,' said Squire Wiley, 'I think
it will make the other fellow feel bet
ter if he thinks I am thinking about
his case a little.' "Kansas City Star.
Time Daring Equinoxes
The Naval observatory says that
the equinoxes are the times when day
and night have the same length, if
sunrise and sunset are defined as the
moments when the center of the sun ia
actually in the plane of the" horizon.
But in the tables published by the ob
servatory sunrise and sunset are the
moments when the top of the tun ap
pears to be on the horizon, refraction,
which makes the sun appear higher
than it is, being taken Into account.
According to the observatory's tables,
therefore, the two 12-hour days come
a little before the vernal equinox and
a little after the autumnal, the num
ber of days in each case depending
on the latitude of the station.
"Lightlesa" Tail Light
For the protection of vehicles oh
the public highways against rear-end
collisions with automobiles, a unique
tall light has been perfected. This
light, it seems, does not require oil
flaine or electricity and Is always
ready for service. Numerous acci
dents occur on account of tall lights
being extinguished from various
causes, but with the "Hghtless light"
attached to the rear of wagon, car
riage or other vehicle, this ingenious
little mechanism gives forth a bright
red light when the rays from an on
coming headlight strike Its focal sur
face and the driver is warned of the
presence of the vehicle ahead.
Intelligent Rattler
That a snake can show gratitude
Is the moral of this tale from Cor
slcana, Texas. Jim Curtis found a
rattesnake caught beneath a bouldr,
and instead of killing It, released It.
The snake followed Jim home and
took up residence in Jim's bachelor
quarters. Affection developed be
tween the two and Jim prepared a
place at the foot of his bed for the
snake to sleep. One night he missed
the rattler and, lighting a lamp, found
a burglar in an adjoining room.
