SQUELCHING A FAKE CLAIM
A New Jersey court handed a
severe jolt to a pair of lawyers who
were promoting the attempted ' raid
of 103 Texas "Dukes" upon a ?2,000
000 fund left by the late James B.
Duke, tobacco magnate, to certain
undiscovered relatives.
The claim of these "Dukes" for
a share in this fortune not only was
thrown out of court, but the judge re
fused to allow even a fee to the two
lawyers who attempted to put it over
There's a considerable business be
ing carried on over the country in
promoting the claims of groups of
people to shares of certain great
fortunes, and at leant two instance
could be noted here where Athena
residents have been "interested" by
alleged estate lawyers.
One of the favorite schemes is to
find a few hundred "alleged" des
cendants of an original owner of cer
tain land which is now part of some
ereat city, and make them believe
that the property legally still belongs
"in the family," and that each one
of the "descendants" can get a share
Even such a hazy prospect of "easy
money" as this evidently must be has
induced many hundreds' of people to
contribute from $100 down to $10
to the shyster lawyers who have been
promoting these fakes and swindles.
That is just what they are; neither
more nor less. No one of them has
ever been found to have the slightest
foundation in law or reason.
But no one of these cases ever got
as far as a trial in court where the
judge could administer the sort of
rebuke the New Jersey judge admin
istered to the two lawyers in the
Texas "Dukes" case.
Which is perhaps to be regretted;
it might put a damper on that sort
of fakery.

THE END OF A "PARTY."
(Morning Oregonian)
The plight of George F. Master
son, under indictment for murder, is
in any event whether his story is
false or true a warning to people
who hold "parties." He explains the
dead woman in his apartment by say
ing that a revolver was accidently
discharged, while in his hands, and
that the same bullet wounded him
and killed her. They were drunken.
He fled the city and, when sober, gave
himself up in Seattle. ' 1
A "party" is not what a party used
to be. Nowadays the term means
something quite the reverse of in
nocent. It means drunkenness par
ticipated in by men and women at the
apartment or home of one of them.
The purpose of the "party" is to per
mit excesses, and to encourage the
casting aside of morality and con
ventions. At such social gatherings
murders and accidental killings often
have occurred. They are prolific of
crime and sorrow and shame. Ihe
crop that Masterson reaps is not a
new one, nor is its yield extraordin
ary. He finds himself in the pre
dicament of many who have sorrowed
too late.
Virtue is desirable among other
reasons because it is in some de
gree the insurance of happiness. Peo
ple who take their pleasure at
"parties," and who believe that
drunken orgies are "fun," may -well
permit themselves a long, reflective
look at George F. Masterson, who
has had his fun, and is all through.
