Clarance Hand, who has been work
ing on the Koepke farm for ths past
four years, has terminated his ser
vices there and with Mrs. Hand, is
temporarily living in Athena.
Mrs. Theresa Berlin was in Athena
Tuesday from Walla Walla directing
some improvements to the Welch
cottage on Adams street which she
has leased, and will occupy in about
a month.
Mr. and Mrs. Dick Swift have tak
en the Baker cottage on High street
temporarily. They left this week for
a visit at Heppner, and Mrs. Swift
. will attend summer Normal school at
LaGrande.
J. S. Huffman and family attended
the annual school picnic at Lowden,
Washington, this week. The Lowden
picnic has come to be a 100 per cent
affair and is much enjoyed by those
participating.
A. A. Mclntyre transacted business
in Walla Walla, Wednesday.
Mr. and Mrs. Victor Hirsch and
daughter Patty of Freewater, were
Athena visitors Saturday evening. In
company with C. L. McFadden and
family they spent Sunday on the
Umatilla river.
Jens Jensen is prepared to ..make
truck bodies for new trucks Athena

will make bodies to suit the purchas
er on short notice,
Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Campbell en
tertained a party at dinner Sunday,
including Mrs. R. J. Campbell, Tom
Campbell, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Cemp
bell, and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hunot
and family of Pendleton
Roy DeFreece was taken ill Sun
day with a severe attack cf ap
pendicitis and was taken to Walla
Walla Monday evening by Dr. G. W,
Cowan and underwent a surgical
operation Tuesday morning. '
Miss Marie Foster, who was em
ployed in the offices of the Preston-

The ladies of the Athena Study
ciud enjoyed a picnic dinner Wednes
day at the Walla Walla park, with
fourteen seated at the table. They
were enthusiastic in praise of this
pleasant spot as a hospitable place
for recreation,
Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Pinkerton
and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Floyd
Pinkerton and family, Rev. and Mrs.
H. J. Perry and family and Mr. and
Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton composed a
party which picniced on the Uma
tilla river Sunday.

E. J. Sommerville, republican can
didate for sheriff, was in town yes
terday from Pendleton.
Charles A. Barrett, Hon. T. J. Kirk
and G. W. Bradley attended the re
publican meeting in Milton last
night.
York Dell was in Adams Wednes
day and umpired the ball game be
tween the Helix and Adams K. of P.
lodges.
Carpenters have been working on
the Dudley residence repairing the
damage done by lightning a couple
of weeks ago.
Helix will celebrate the tourth of
July. This was the unanimous decis
ion at a mass meeting of citizens,
held Tuesday evening.
Attorney Peterson and James Lieu-
allen, democratic nominee for repre
sentative, were electioneering in Mil
ton and Freewater last week.
Miss Alcy Foss, who has been
teaching in Montana, is expected to
arrive home Tuesday of next week.
Miss Foss has been retained to teach
for another year in Glasgow, Mon
tana.
Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Smith came
up from Pendleton yesterday. Mr.
Smith, who has been taking a vaca
tion, will resign his position as 0. R.
& N. agent, here, and will follow the
life insurance business.
Mr. A. M. Gillis, whose health has
been failing for some time, contem
plates leaving in a couple of weeks
for Prince Edwards Island, where he
will remain for the summer. It is
thought the change of climate will be
beneficial to Mr. Gillis' health.

Mr. and Mrs. M. L. Watts and Geo.
Gross and Miss Mae Gross left Sun
day evening for Portland where they
will represent the Athena lodges of
Odd Fellows and Rebekahs, at grand
lodge which convenes there this
week.
The show window at the Manasse
store is attracting much attention to
day. Miss Jeannette Manasse, with
her usual good taste and original
ideas, has dressed ' the window in
Scotch plaid, in honor of the day, and
the sight brings a smile to the face
of many a canny Scot.
At the Baptist church Sunday
morning, Kev. George T. JMUs will
preach the annual union Memorial
sermon. The Grand Army veterans
extend a cordial invitation to old
soldiers and the general public to at
tend the memorial service. On
Decoration Day the members of the
local G. A. R. post will march to the
cemetery for the purpose of decorat
ing graves.
Out at the mill the boys have or
ganized a baseball team. Mr. Myers
is manager of the team and the irre
pressible, elongated "Slim" Miller is
catcher for the aggregation. Sunday
afternoon the Mill team will play
Jack Parker's crack town team, and
there is going to be some fun. An ad
mission of 10 cents will be charged,
the proceeds of the game to go to the
Yelioy Kids as a benefit.
Eugene Stanton, who arrived from
Montana the other evening, lugged
into town a valise with contents grue
some in the extreme. Mr. Stanton's
cargo consisted exclusively of a
choice collection of rattlesnakes, one
of which was the largest ever seen
here. It is a little over six feet long
and big around in proportion. The
snakes are harmless, having had
their fangs extracted so that they
can be handled safely in shows and
other exhibitions.
