Mrs. Lilla Kirk and son John were guests of Walla Walla friends, Sun day. Mr. and Mrs. Win, Milne of Pend leton visited Mrs. W. K. Wall, Sun day. The Women's Society of the Bap tist Church met with Mrs. Betts Thursday. Mrs. Marion Ilansell and daugh ter Helen were Walla Walla visitors Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. E. II. Leonard Waitsburg, motored down to Athena Wednesday. I). II. Sanders who has been poor health is reported to be some' what improved. Mrs. L. G. Stott of Dayton, Wash is visiting her daughter Mrs. E. 0 Lee and family. Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Watson of Wal lu Walla visited -over Sunday with the E. 0. Lee family. Mr. and Mrs. W. McFherson and Mr. and Mrs. W. O. Read, visited at the McKay dam Sunday. Mrs. Jennie Gross spent the week end with her granddaughter Mrs, Ellis Brower in Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. Fred Beckner and children of Nolin spent Wednesday at the Chas. Williams home. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Frazier of Milton, visited at the J. W. Pinker ton home in Athena, Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. C. M. Eager were dinner guests Friday evening at the Chas. Bond home in Pendleton. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Bentz, of Spok line are spending the week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Keen Miss Marie f oster underwent a .major operation at St. Mary's hos pital Walla Walla, Monday evening. Mrs. J. H. Booher of Pendleton spent Wednesday with her father, John Walker and sister Jennie Mae. Mrs. Ralph Hassell and Mrs. Ellis Brower. of Pendleton were guests I'riday evening of Mrs. Jennie Gross The M. Mrs. David Stone and Mrs. Omer Stephens of Athena, attended the Umatilla County Council of the Par ent Teacher's Association, meeting at Adams, Saturday. Neil Mclntyre was presented a new Victory Six Dodge coach, by his mother Mrs. Zeltha Mclntyre last week. The next meeting of the J. T. Club will be held at the home of Mrs. Will Piper, west of Athena, Friday, April 27. J. C. Walter underwent a major operation at St. Mary's hospital last week, and is convalescing satis factorily. Elizabeth Holwager returned to Walla Walla after ten days spent at the home of Mr. and Mrs. 3. B. Richards. Athena fans who attended the box- mg- card at Walla Walla, Tuesday night, report that the bouts were good ones. Mrs. James Stonecipher of Waits- burg, sister of Ralph Singer, visited at the Singer home in Athena, over the week-end. Mrs. W. K. Wall slipped on the back door step of her home, falling in such a manner as to severely in jure her back. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Cannon and daughters Valerie and Roberta'were visitors at the A. M. Ross home Weston Sunday. Harold Kirk, who spent Easter vacation with his parents, returned to Portland, where he attends Hill' Military Academy. ' Hoot, Mon! A Scottish dance for the benefit of the swimming pool fund will be given tomorrow night at Legion Hall by Athena-Weston Legion Post. Tom Gurdane, candidate for the republican nomination for sheriff, was in Athena, Wednesday, meeting his friends and getting acquainted with everybody. Miss Bernice Cogswell of Kenne- wick, Washington, spent a few days the past week at the Frank Ames home. Mrs. Ames and Miss Cogs well are cousins. Mr. and Mrs. McPherson and Mr. and Mrs. W. 0. Read spent Sunday at McKay Dam. They declare nature helps to make this a spot of beauty at this time. Miss Dorothy Lee, who graduates from Cheney Normal School in June, has been elected to teach the school the Sheldon Taylor district west of Athena, for the coming year, in Mrs. G. S. Prestbye has been visitor this week at the home of her mother Mrs. Jennie Gross and sister Mrs. A. W. Douglas, before returning to her home near Kalispel, Montana, Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Harder and daughter Mary Jane who have re cently moved to Grass Valley, from Milton, visited Mrs. Harder's parent; Mr. and Mrs. Frank DeFreece, last Saturday Dr. and Mrs. I. E. Kunz and son visited last week at the Roy Cannon home. Dr. and Mrs. Kunz are graduates of the Chiropractic school of Seattle and contemplate locating Walla Walla. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Haney and Miss , Lena Redding were dinner guests Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Albert O'Harra when birthday dinner was given in honor of their son Lwayne. The Singer pony, which was stolen from its pasture several days ago. was found at the William Russell place near Walla Walla. Fred Singer went over and rodo the pony home the fore part of the week The members of Athena-Weston Legion Post are highly elated and deeply appreciative for the liberal patronage the public gave them at the preseentation of "The World War" picture. About 21 members were present. The afternoon was spent with needle and chat. Mrs. A. A. Mclntyre and Mrs. Flint Johns served refreshments. Mr. and Mrs. Henry Koepke started on their return trip to their California home, Monday by motor. They went by the Central Oregon route, after spending a fortnight here with their son, Henry. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton had as their guests over the. week-end Mrs. Pinkerton's brother and sister, Elvon Hampton and Miss Alfreda Hampton, also Miss Mayme Krier and Selmer Aim all of Genesee, Idaho. They made the trip in Neil's new Victory six. c The Baptist Missionary Society met Wednesday afternoon at the home of Mrs. Chas Betts south of town, with a good attendance and an interesting program. Refreshments were served by the hostess and assistant. Members of the local Christian church met Tuesday at the parson age and gave it a general house cleaning, making ready for the new; pastor who expects to be here the last Sunday in April, to fill the local pastorate. The Delta, Delta, Delta Sorority of Whitman i College sponsored a bridge tea at Prentiss Hall, Satur day April 14. Mrs. H. A. Barrett, Mrs. C. L. McFadden, Mrs.Max Hop per and Mrs. H. L. Watts were guests of Miss Dorothy Berlin, one of the , hostesses. Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Sauze of Wal la Walla were guests Sunday at the E. C. Rogers home.. They gave a discouraging report of the condition of George McDonald, who is critical ly ill at his home at Pullman, Wash. Mr. McDonald is a brother-in-law of Mrs. Sauze and Mr.. Rogers. Rev. Bollinger has been ill the past week as the results of a relapse from a cold. Not being able to fill the pulpit Sunday, morning services were conducted by J. H. Morris of the Pendleton Baptist church. The young people took charge of the eve ning services with Dorwin Phillips as leader. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Haynie of Burns, accompained by Mr. and Mrs. George Banister, motored up from Portland, Wednesday. Mr. Haynie, who is proprietor of a Penney store at Burns, continued on his journey yesterday, Mrs. Haynie and little daughter remaining at the Banister home for a visit. The Study Club met last Friday afternoon at'the home of Mrs. E. C. Rogers. The study of various novel ists was the topic for the day. Works of Harold Bell Wright, F. Marion Crawford, Kathleen Norris nnd Edith Wharton were reviewed and discussed. Eleven members were in attendance. The next meeting will be April 27th at the home of Mrs. H. H. Hill. The Athena Bridge Club was enter tained at a one o'clock luncheon Fri day afternoon at the home of Mrs. B. B. Richards with Mrs. J. F. Ker shaw as assistant hostess. Twelve guests were seated at tables made at tractive with spring flowers, place cards and nut baskets in pastel shades. Mrs. Ralph Hassell of Pendleton, Mrs. E. C. Prestbye, Mrs M. W. Hansell and Mrs. Clarence Toole were guests other than club members. Mrs. Prestbye won guest prize while Mrs. Henry Dell won high club score. The Etude Club met last Thurs day afternoon at the home of Mrs. James Cresswell with thirteen mem bers present Mrs. A.' W. Douglas and Pearl Ramsay had charge of the pro gram which was as follows: History of Franz Schubert and some of his works, Mrs. Douglas; vocal solo, Mrs. Floyd Pinkerton; Piano Duet, Schubert s Serenade, Mrs. Max Hop per and Mrs. Lawrence Pinkerton: vocal numbers, Mrs. D. T. Stone and chorus practice. A dainty salad and wafers were served by the committee. The next meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. M. I. Miller with Mrs. Penn Harris as hostess, April 26th. A happy surprise was given Mrs. F. Herr, who is leaving Athena for Portland soon, by the ladies of the M. E. Missionary Society. Mrs. Roy Cannon entertained fif teen girls Saturday afternoon in honor of her daughter Valeries 13th birthday. Out doors games were enjoyed until 4 o'clock when seated round a large table with daffodils as a center piece, place cards and yellow , baskets of sweets, a two course luncheon was served. Mrs. Clarence Zerba assisted the hostess in serving. Besides the honpree the following girls were present, Roberta Cannon, Maxine Moore, Marjorie Montague, Bernice Wilson, Jean Zerba, Mary Jane Miller, Velma and Lora Ross, Helen and Genevieve Barrett, Barbara Lee, Rachel Smith, Jewel and Joyce Pinkerton. Northi Coast Lima Hal E. Hoss Files His Formal Declaration Oregon City. Hal E. Hoss, of Ore gon City, has filed his formal declar ation for the office with the secre tary of state's office. Mr. Hoss will use as his slogan on the ballot at the primary election, May 18, "Trained in business and state administration; endorsed by 121 newspapers; efficient service." Mr. Hoss, who recently resigned as private secretary to Governor I. L. Patterson, has his campaign headqmarters at Oregon City, where he was manager of the Oregon City Enterprise for seven years prior to serving in an official capacity for the state. Incorporated with his filing declaration, Mr. Hoss made the fol lowing pledge. "If nominated and elected I will during my term of office gie to the people of the state of Oregon on efficient and economical administra tion of their affairs, so far as they would come under my juris liction. would make an earnest effort to aid in the development and utilisation of our natural resources and local manufacturing business by urging that state business go to Oregon pro ducers and Oregon firms whenever possible.
