Officials of the department claim that "sparrows may be cooked by any of the methods employed for either reed-birds or quail. When boned, broiled, buttered and served on toast, they are particularly good and com pare favorably with the best kind of small game." The same officials assert that in asmuch as the English sparrow is a pest in most localities of the Uni ted States, there is therefore no rea son why these birds should not be utilized for food purposes in America just as they have been in the Old World for centuries. One of the greatest objections to the English sparrow is its meanness towards our small native birds, es pecially those familiar specic3 which, like itself build their nests in cavities. Nest boxes that are provided for wrens, bluebirds or martins birds both useful and pleasing too often fall into the possession of this bird pest. The way to keep sparrows out of wren boxes is to make the hole only an inch in diameter; the wren cin easily enter, but the sparrow can not. The sparrow is not only an enemy to our worthwhile native birds, but it is an economic nuisance. It not only destroys fruit of various kinds, such as cherries, grapes, pears and ' peacrres, but it also destroys buds and vines. In gardens it eats seeds as they ripen, and nips off tender young vegetables, especially peas and let tuce, as they appear above ground. It damages wheat 'and other grains, whether newly sown, ripening or in shocks. A flock of fifty sparrows requires daily the equivalent of a quart of wheat. The annual loss caused by these birds throughout the country is something enormous. In return for what they devour they give neither song nor service. Therefore, why not get rid of them by serving them piping hot for dinner? This alien bird was introduced into the United Slates in 1851. It was brought to this country through an ill-advised endeavor to populate a few city parks with non-migratory birds. - o Negotiations are pending by which if successful, the First National Bank of Athena will take over the assets of the Farmers' Hank of We.ston, pay off the depositors in full and thus liquidate the Weston institution. The transfer is in line with a general move throughout the country where banks that are not returning divi dends to their stockholders are be ing absorbed by stronger financial institutions, their depositors pro tected, and in many cases salvaged without loss to their stockholders. The local transaction comes through the determination of the board of directors of the Weston bpnk to close its affairs after years of oper ation without satisfactory returns. In no way whatever has the Firvt Nutional aspired to gain control of the Weston bank, aside from enter ing negotiations after the Weston bank officials had offered the institution for sale and other banks had been importuned to take it over. Quite to the contrary, officials of the First National look upon the Weston and Athena communities in the ac cepted neighborly sense that their interests are to a large degree iden tical, and due to the fact that the Weston bank was to liquidate and cease business, and feeling that Ath ena being the neighbor town would better facilitate Weston's future banking, they entered an open mar ket as it were, and their offer, bet ter than any other has been accepted by the Weston bank's directors, sub- j ject to confirmation by the stock holder of that bank. require a helluva lot of carpentera to build the towns.
