UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eu
gene. Hansen and Hammond, Portland
contractors,, were awarded, the contract
to construct the first unit of the new
men's dormitory for the University of
Oregon, at a special meeting of the
board of regents. The Portland com
pany bid $310,000, for the project,
against $312,943 bid by Lorenz Broth
ers,. Portland, and $313,000 by Stein
brothers, the only Eugene firm entered.
' The bond issue of $375,000 which will
finance the structure and furnish it,
will.be handled by Dean Witter, Port
land firm, ,who bid in cooperation with
the Marine National Bank of Seattle,
Wash. This firm bid 02:13, with interest
at four and-one-half per cent. The rate
of interest was particularlyi attractive
and University officials point out that
such a rate reflects the' high 'credit raft
ing of the institution; : ' (
Work on the dormitory, which is ex
pected to be rushed so that the struc
ture can be completed by fall, will be
started in the immediate future, it is
planned. Additional details of con
struction were announced today by
Ellis K Lawrence, of the firm of Law
rence and Holford, University archi
tects. The capacity of the . hall has
been increased from 271, as first pro
posed, to 278 men. The roof will be of
asbestos, with copper flashings, making
this part absolutely fireproof. ,
The structure will have its own re
frigeration plant, which will be of the
latest type, and this will include an
ice-plant and cork-lined storage room.
The dining room will be large enough
to accommodate 500 persons at one sit
ting, yet will be divided by folding
doors so that it forms five separate
rooms. This hall can also be Used for
parties and dances, and will hare a
floor space almost as large as that now
used for such purposes in the Woman's
building. The dining room will be pan
elled in attractive style. .
. Each floor will have plenty of
shower baths and other plumbing facili
ties, and . the entire structure will be
roomy and comfortable for the inhabitants.
Gift Proved of Little
Value to Lafayette
When General Lafayette ' visited
America In 1824 congress, by act of
December 28, 1S24, granted him $200,
000 and "one complete town of land"
in recognition of his "services and
sacrifices" during the Revolution,
Pathfinder Magazine recalls. The lnndv

propriated lands of the United
Staters." This location was made in
what was then known as West Flor-j
Ida and embraced 23,028.50 acres cov
ering part of what is now the city of
Tallahassee. A patent for this land
was issued on July 4,; 1825, and was
delivered to Lafayette In person by
the commissioner of the general land
office. A notice In the Pensacola '.
Gazette of 1825 says Hint Colonel Mc-:
Kee arrived in Florida to select the
land for the famous Frenchman. La-:
fayette never saw his Florida land. An
attempt was made tp colonize this
tract by French settlers, under Count i
La Porte, but the scheme was unsuc
cessful. A few years later Lafayette
made another attempt nt ' coloniza
tion. He sent Charles Murat, a son
of the great cavalry general and
Napoleon's sister, but lie too . failed. :
After Lafayette's death the land was
sold by his heirs and It Is now owned
by a large number of different per

Like Old Buccaneers
Although pirates are hardly less
commtn than fishermen on some Chi
nese rivers, they differ from the
pirates of popular Juvenile fiction In
that they are not particularly blood
thirsty. In fact some of China's best
known government officials began life
as bandits or pirates, and found it no
detriment socially in after yearsr An
Incident illustrating something of the
sort was told in the Dearborn Inde
pendent by William E. Barton, who
has traveled extensively in the Orient,
ts follows: ?
"Only a few months ago a steam
launch belonging to a Canton Chris
tian college, loaded with students, was
captured and held for ransom. The
ransom was not paid. The governor
of the Island of Honan, on which the
college Is located, assured the college
people that it was not wise to pay
ransom, or It would have to be done
again. 'They will not kill,', he . said.
When I was a robber, we captured
for ransom, but we did not kill.';" .
This Information proved t .reliable,
the writer continues, and the students
and launch were returned within a
few days. . . . ' .-

have occurred very recently. A young

Cut worms are said' to be numerous
in the wheat fields of the (Jerking
Flat neighborhood west of town. Also
in Sand-Hollow the worms are doing
considerable damage, so it is report
ed." Bruce Wallace, proprietor of the
Pioneer drug store has purchased the
Jones cottage on Jefferson street, and
will occupy it ai once. .Mr. and Mrs.
Jones are leaving , Athena for Echo,
where they will conduct a hotel. ' '
A number of newspaper men were
in town Sunday and made their head
quarters at the Press office. The
Press man had the honor of entertain
ing T. D. S. Hart of Walla Walla,
and Messrs Aldrich and Drake of Pen
dleton. .
Mitt Bush has made a complaint
against Mike Ryan, before district
Attorney Phelps. " He alleges that
during a dispute Ryan drew a gun.
There are said to be conflicting re
ports concerning the affair and .the
district attorney will investigate be
fore making any arrests.
The Yellow Kids will play in Walla
Walla Saturday and Sunday. An ex-i
cursion train will run from Pendleton
to Walla Walla Sunday morning, re
turning in the evening. This will
give the people of the intervening
towns an opportunity of visiting the
garden city and witnessing the Sun
day game. Ike Butler, the famous
pitcher will be seen at his best in
that game. ,
