The Voter further says: "The pioneers left what js now the Columbia River Highway at and near Echo in Umatilla County, making their roads and trails well south of the Columbia and away from its banks, through or near Wellsprings, lone, Olex, Rockcreek, McDonald, Klondike and Wasco to The Dalles. A much-traveled road has been in use for many years through these points, and actually approximates the route laboriously followed by the ox-teams. At places this road is 25 miles soutn of the Columbia River, and the character of country traversed is en tirely different from that on the bank of the River, where the Columbia River Highway now is constructed. "From The Dalles to Western Ore gon, an old Indian trail north of Mt. Hood was chiefly used by the '43 and '44 immigrations, while the great bulk of later immigrations came via Dufur, Tygh Valley and Government Camp south of Mt. Hood, along the old Earlow Road. Oregon City was their principal destination, not Port land, and the Oregon Trail proper ended at Oregon City. At no time did the pioneers use any road or trail down through the Columbia River Gorge. Those who came down the river were few in proportion to those who used the Barlow Road, and the river traffic was entirely by raft or boat, except for a few miles at Cascade Portage, the North Bank in Washington there being chiefly used. "There is no more warrant for ap plying the name "Oregon Trail" be yond Oregon City than to apply it to any or all of the roads used by the pioneers in dispersing from that center. The roads south from Ore gon City into the Willamette Valley could far more justly be designated as part of the Oregon Trail than could the road to Portland and Olympia, and certainly there is not the remotest excuse for designating the Lower Columbia River Highway from Portland to Astoria as part of the Oregon Trail. Travel was by boat. The country now traversed by the paved highway was impassable by through road until the paved highway was constructed fourteen years ago. If any road were used from Portland to Astoria and Seaside in early Ore gon days, it would have been the in land highway through Gales Creek, Vernonia and Mist. "Out of respect for our pioneers, our Oregon traditions and historical verity, we protest against transfer of the Oregon Trail name from the ap proximate route of the pioneers and its application to paved highways where no roads or trails were used by pioneers, or were in existence until within the last fifteen years." A tale of horror, degragation and poverty is disclosed in the report made to the senate interstate com merce committee by ia subcommittee, which recently investigated condi tions prevailing in the Pittsburg coal fields. The investigation should, and probably will lead to legislative solution of adjusting the Pennsyl vania mining industry which has long been the seat of labor dissension. Somebody laid this one on our desk: "Take one reckless natural born fool; two or three big drinks of bad liquor; a fast, high-powered automobile. Soak the fool in the liquor, place in the car, and let him go. After due time, remove from wreckage, place in satin-lined box, and garnish with flowers." "What is a good American?" asks Arthur Brisbane, and he .answers the question this way: "Herbert Hoover's name is a good answer. He is a good American, has proved it, and his Americanism is based on experience." "Gas is necessary to industry," is u phrase that is frequently quoted. Maybe it is, but the necessity general ly exists where there is nothing else but From a recent speech made by Arnaldo Mussolini, brother of the dictator, wo infer that the whole family has inherited a gift of gab. Down at Portland it seems they are after Kirkpatrick more than they are out to "get" his T. B. remedy. THE PEACE PACT (Walla Walla Union) France and the United States have signed a pact which renounces war and cements a bond of friendship be tween the nations which began just 150 years ago. The new treaty goes far beyond the assertion of peace and friendship contained in the original covenant with France. Not only does it declare that war between these two nations is unthinkable but it sets up new and strong machinery for the arbitration of conciliation of disputes between them which might otherwise lead to war. It was with France that the U. S. signed its first treaty of peace. The first document which has been gathering dust for 150 years bears the signature of Louis the six teenth and it outlined the agreements of commerce and amity which have guided the nations for a century and a half. The new treaty, as stated, goes much further and provides that in cases of dispute the questions will be arbitrated. The full text of the treaty will not be known until later but it is known that it practically! outlaws war between France and the United States and it is hoped it will be the forerunner of pacts with other nations. SHERIFF ANNOUNCES HIS CANDIDACY It is with pleasure that I announce myself as Republican candidate for Sheriff for another term. I do this thus earlv because I have a host of friends who have asked me whether or not I was comme out as an asDirant for the office another term, and also because it has been rumored about that I was going to quit. During the past three years and more I have endeavored to the best of my ability to carry on thework of this office impartially and "with out prejudice. 1 have made some mistakes but these have been mis takes of the head and not of the heart, and, I believe, will work out to advantage in the future lor tnese mistakes have given experience by which I hope to profit. Confidently and without boasting i fppl that with the experiences of the past I am much better qualified, more competent and or greater vaiue to Umatilla County as an exesutive officer than when first elected. Tt. has been mv aim to enforce all our laws, and give attention to all wVipn violations have been brought to my notice, notwithstand ing the fact that some have charged that I have neglected thieves and rob bers just to catch a bootlegger which accusation is false and malicious Thrnnch the activities of the Shpriff's office I have been able to turn over to the General Fund each year fine money sufficient to pay the salaries of the sheriff and one deputy so that in reality the tax payers of the County have been re lieved of this obligation thus ful filling my pledge for an economic administration. Mv attitude toward the moonshm- prs. hootleee-ers and criminals gen erally has created some bitter enemies, but on the other hand, l trust, my conscientious and sincere loyalty to my obligations and duties has created for me a host of faith ful friends who realize something of the difficulties of the sheriff. Under the efficient direction of Mr. Wheeler the tax department has been most satisfactorily handled. We have tried to be kind and courteous to all our citizens who call to transact business here, and have had many compliments from banks and lean companies who have written many letters commending the care and nainstakinz service rendered in all matters pertaining to their business. If nominated and elected I shall continue to hold the office as a high and sacred trust. R. T. COOKINGHAM, Sheriff. To I'nre i:oimtiirlou forever IVkc I'.iiiCHii'tH lauiily 'Jiiilnnk-..
