Dorothy Carr of Walla Walla is irnpst this week of Emma Rinsrel. Mrs. Orel McPherrin and son left Wednesday morning for Heppner. Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Adair were Pendleton callers Monday afternoon. Mrs. Avery and daughter of Walla Walla were Athena visitors Friday. Angus Gillis of Washtucna called on "business men in Athena Thursday. Commencing Monday, March 12, Athena barber shops will remain open evenings. Frank Adair of Princetown Idaho, visited relatives in Athena over the week-end. Chas. Williams and daughter Ruth of Walla Walla were Athena visitors this week. Miss Lois Smith has been ill this week at her home north of Athena with tonsilitis. Mr. and Mrs. E. C. Rogers enter tained Mr. and Mrs. W. 0. Read at dinner, Sunday. A larze number of Athena fans at tended the basketball tournament csmes at Milton. Mrs. Will Piper was in Athena yesterday from her home near Helix, visiting friends. Mrs. Ora Smith and daughter Dorothy Burke were dinner guests in Freewater Sunday. Miss Hilda Dickenson was absent from the local switch board, Tuesday on account of illness. The Christian Missionary society met at the home of Mrs. Stella Keen, Wednesday afternoon. Dean Pinkerton spent the week-end with his parents, returning to his school Sunday evening. Yard raking and a general spring cleanup has been in progress this week at many Athena homes. Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Richards anJ son Roland and Mrs. H. H. Hill were Walla Walla visitors Sunday. Mrs. C. M. Eager accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Bond of Pendleton, to Walla Walla, Tuesday afternoon. Ray Young and family have moved to the ranch home of Mrs. Lilla Kirk where Mr. Young will be employed. Mr. and Mrs. Akey of the State Line service station, were visitors Tuesday at the A. W. Logsdon home. The 0. D. 0. club are meeting with Mrs. Lawrence Pinkerton this after noon with .Mrs. Virgil Zerba serving. Mrs. Dave Williams and Mrs.. Delia Booher of Walla Walla visited friends and relatives in Athena, Fri day. Mr. and Mrs. Victor Hirsch and daughter spent Sunday in Athena at the J. C. Harwood and Frank Ames homes. Mrs. E. J. Burchill of Pendleton spent last week-end with her daughter, Mrs. C. M. Eager and family. Mrs. Lillian Kenworthy and son of Spokane are visiting Mrs. Ken worthy's parents Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Gerking. Will Piper recently purchased the William Ruther place near . Helix, comprising 320 acres of splendid wheat land. Mrs. Henry Schmitt of Waitsburg called on old friends in Athena last week. Mrs. Schmitt was a former resident of this vicinity. Little Peggy Hill daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Hill of Walla Walla is visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. H. H. Hill of this city. Miss Mildred Bateman was ill a few days, this week and was unable to at tend school. Mrs. Harold Fredericks substituted for Miss Bateman. Mr. and Mrs. Lon Sisk and son of Diamond Washington were week-end visitors at the M. I. Miller home, leaving for home Sunday morning. Mr. and Mrs. Chas Dudley of Gold endale, Washington spent Monday visiting Mrs. Dudley's sister Mrs. W. K. Wall, returning home Tuesday. Mrs, Henry Knight came up from Portland Friday, spending the week end with her parents, 'Mr. and Mrs. Sims Dickenson, returning home Mon day. Mrs. W. S. Ferguson returned home Thursday evening after a week spent in Nampa, Idaho, visiting her daughter Mrs. Horace Belknap and family. Mrs. Minnie Willaby returned home from Freewater Wednesday, where she visited her son Virgil and family. Virgil is engaged in farming in that vicinity. Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Jones spent Sun day at the Henry Thompson home in Wallula. Henry and J. E. cleaned up a lot of jackrabbits with their "22s" In the Columbia Gap district. Mr. and Mrs. E. R. Davidson who have been residing at Pueblo, Colo rado, are now making their home in Central City, Nebraska, where Mr. Davidson is manager of a Skaggs store. Dr. 0. C. Wright of Portland was a dinner guest of Rev, and Mr. Boll inger, Monday evening. He lectured at the Baptist church and threw the beauty spots of Oregon on the screen in the evening. A general house cleaning was given the Christian church, Tuesday after noon, when a few members gathered and strenuously made use of brooms, mops and dusters, leaving everything spick and span. Mr. and Mrs. H. W. LeRoy enter tained over the week-end, Mrs. Maud LeRoy and Taul LeRoy of Husum, Washington; and Mrs. Roy Hargrave and daughter, Mary Lou of White Salmon, Washington. Miss Marjorie Booher .came over the from Walla Walla and 'spent week-end with Athena friends. Mrs. Stella Keen was hostess Wednesday afternoon to the Christian Missionary society, when 7 fourteen members were present. The Young People's Society of the Christian church1 will hold their bi monthly party in the church reception rooms, tonight. Mrs. George Gerking and Mrs. H. W. LeRoy have charge of the arrangements. Mr. and Mrs. D. A. Pinkerton of Milton were Athena visitors Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Pinkerton will soon be residents of Athena on the completion of the service station now being con structed by Mr. Pinkerton and son Lawrence Pinkerton, Several car loads of Athena people attended the services at the Metho dist church in Weston, Tuesday eve ning. Local singers took part in the song service.. Mrs. 0. H. Reeder rendered a solo, and Lewis Stewart and Mrs. Emmett Lee a duet. In honor of the seventh birthday of Billy Hansell, his sisters, Misses Helen and Mildred, served a sumptu ous chicken dinner Sunday, with a splendid birthday cake flighted by seven candles gracing the" board. Mr. and Mrs. F. B. Boyd were guests. The Pollyannas, Mrs. Clarence Zerba's class of intermediate girls, gave a banquet at 6 o'clock Saturday evening in the Baptist church parlors below stairs. Each girl invited one guest and they made things lively be fore and after the banquet, playing games. Miss Roma Charlton arrived home Saturday morning from Portland. Miss Charlton attended Normal at Monmouth until the first of the year, and since has been engaged as stenographer for a Portland firm. Miss Charlton contemplates returning to Portland later. Wauna Campfire Girls are getting along well in their first aid work. At the meeting of March 5th, a hike was planned for Saturday, March 11, when leaving Athena at 11 o'clock, a. m. the girls will hike to the home of Nylene Taylor, west of town. Betty Eager has been elected scribe. Mrs. A. B. McEwen arrived in Ath ena, Saturday evening after spend ing the winter in Glendale, Arizona, visiting a brother, thence to Los Angeles where she . visited her daughter Jessica. .Mrs. McEwen re turned to her home in Portland last week. While here she will visit her daughter Mrs. H. A. Barrett, and sons A. L. and R. B. McEwen. An interesting program was car ried out by the members of the Study club, which met at the home of Mrs. Lee Meyer, last Friday afternoon, Fourteen ladies were present. Thej principal feature of the afternoon was a book review by Mrs. W. 0. Read, her subject being, "The Country of the Pointed Firs," by Sarah Orne Jewett. The club will meet next Friday after noon with Mrs. Fred Gross, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Claude Dickenson. The J. T. club entertained their husbands with cards at the home of Mrs. Ravella Lieuallen Friday eve ning. Six tables of Bridge were at play Mr. and Mrs. Flint Johns re ceived high score, while Mr. and Mrs. A. A. Mclntyre won consolation. A two course luncheon was served by Mesdames C. L. McFadden, C, E. Fisk, Max Hopper, James Lieuallen and A. W. Douglas. The club will hold its next meeting at the home of Mrs. Lawrence Penkerton, March 16. The Intermediate class of boys of the Baptist Sunday school will hold a cooked food sale on Saturday after noon at Steve's Grocery March 10th starting at 1 p. m. There will be oodles of good things for Sunday din ner including fresh eggs, butter, cheese, cakes, pies, country ham, chickens etc. The junior and inter mediate departments of the Sunday school are buying the new lights for the church. This is Mrs. Betts' class of boys. Mrs. William Gholson is in Walla Walla, where she is attending her aged father, Angus McKay, who had the misfortune to fall and break a bone in his hip last Saturday. Mr. McKay is 94 years old, and grave fears are felt for his recovery. Grandma Piper has returned from Long Beach, California, where she spent the winter. She was ac companied on the trip home, which was made by motor, by Mrs. Rush and daughter. Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Frazier and daughter of Milton were guests of Mrs. Frazier's parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Pinkerton, Sunday. Mrs. A. L. McEwen and children spent the week-end in Walla Walla visiting relatives. Mr. and Mrs. George Banister are home from Portland, where v they spent the winter. Miss Mildred Bateman, the coach, has chosen "Brother Josiah," a comedy in three acts by W. C. Park er, for this year's production and with a carefully selected cast work is al ready under way. Boy's Athletics The Athena boys did well in the tournament this year. The boys lost the first game to Pendleton by a score of 44 to 17; this sort of woke the boys up for . they won every game after that. The boys won the consolation title from Boardman in a slow but rough and hard game. Track season will soon start as basketball is over. There are several boys who intend to enter the sectional meet this year. Personal A number of the high school students attended the basketball tournament Friday and Saturday at Milton. Areta Kirk was a Pendleton visitor Saturday. Pearl Green was absent from school three days last week, Georgia Green was in Walla Walla Sunday.
