Pomeroy Youth Is 'T Shot While Cleaning Small Calibre Rifle Of special interest to Eastern Ore gon is the coming State Christian Endeavor convention to be held in Jhe Dalles, April 19-22, 1928. This will be the first all-state Christian En deavor convention to be held east of the mountains, and the young people of this part of the state are intending to take advantage of its nearness to . them. Rev. Mr. E. W. Praetorius, national young people's worker of the Evan gelical churches of the United States will be the chief convention speaker. Paul C. Brown, of Los Angeles, who travels all over the ccast in the in terests of Christian Endeavor, will also be a prominent person in the convention. Dr. Norman K. Tul!y, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Salem, will be there to .participate in the program, as will also Walter L. Myers, of Eugene. Prof. C. H. Hohgatt of Eugene will lead and Miss Lulu Aydolott of the same city will preside at the piano.' There will be inspirational address es, enjoyable singing, conferences on practical Christian Endeavor plans, graded Christian Endeavor meetings, a parade, banquets and all that goes to make these annual gatherings at tractive to young people. A committee is at work iii The Dalles making preparations for the entertainment of the convention, and splendid backing is being given it not only by the churches, but by the Chamber of Commerce, various clubs, and the City itself. The municipal auditorium is to be used for thn con vention sessions, which speak3 well for the city's interest and the ede quate housing of the convention. According to interest expressed in various parts of the state, the con vention will be well attended. Tha delegates will be given free lodging and breakfasts in The Dalles homes. Athena Loses Hard Game to Pendleton In a hard basketball game Mon day night in the local gym, Athena High School lost its last game of the season to Pendleton High School' by the score of 26 to 17. Athena led at half 11 ta 7. - Pendleton came back in the third period, soon passed the locals, and was not headed again during the remainder of the contest. Pendleton had defeated Athena earlier in the season by a close margin, and the two teams are drawn opponents for their first tournament game at Milton. Myrick tossed six field goals for Athena, and DeWilde starred for Pendleton with three field goals and looped into the hoop with six free throws. The game was refereed by Dimmick, coach of Wa-Hi. The line- WALLA WALLA. An accidental discharge of a .22 calibre rifle with the bullet penetrating the bowels both front and back, brought Merle Robin son, son of F. M. Robinson of Pome roy, to the Walla Walla General hos pital in a serious condition. The Pomeroy youth was injured at his home Sunday. He was reported last night to be resting easier and to have shown some improvement, although it was stated that the exact serious ness of his injury would be determin ed more fully today or tomorrow. It was reported that he is also suffering from pneumonia. The young man who is a student at Washington State collegestarted to clean the rifle, which he believed was unloaded. The magazine was pushed down, automatically cocking the rifle and' placing the shell which was in the gun, in position for firing. Be lieving the rifle unloaded, Mr. Robin son bent over and pulled the trigger, the discharge striking him m the groin. , H. B. Rees for Recorder H. B. Rees of Stanfield, has filed as a candidate for the republican nomination for county recorder at the Mav primaries. Mr. Rees has for 27 years been a resident of Umatilla county. For three years' he was in the grocery business in Pendleton, being a member of the firm of Clark & Rees. He was for seven years as sistant postmaster under J. T. Brown in Pendleton and is known for his clerical ability. Since leaving Pend leton he has been engaged in farm ing in the West end of the county. ' Athena Graders Win "Pike" Miller's Athena , grade basketball team won from the Helix grade team on the local floor in a well played game by the score of 14 to 9. The Athena lads have develop ed a consistent system of floor work which proved to be the undoing of the Helix team. Helix put up a strong defense, otherwise the Athena score would have been much larger. In preliminary play the grade girls won from the girl freshman-sopho more teams with score of 8 to 6. C. Proebstel has filed his declara tion of candidacy for re-election to the office of district attorney, with the Secretary of State. "Present in cumbent, experienced prosecutor; honesty, economy and fearless en forcement of all laws," is the declara tion to follow Proebstel's name on the ballot. He was born at Weston, Umatilla County, Oregon, the son of the late Geo. W. Proebstel of Weston, and the grandson of the late Senator Proeb stel, pioneer hardware merchant of Weston. Was educated . in Oregon schools, and lived in Umatilla County all his life with the exceptions of time spent at college and service in the late war. Served in the World War, In telligence Section, Regular Army. He served as deputy clerk of the Circuit Court, of Umatilla County. Was ad mitted to the practice of law in the Supreme Court of the State of Oregon and Federal courts. Member of In ternational Crime conference, held under the auspices of the Northwest Association of Sheriffs and police, serving as vice-chairman on commit tee on international extradition to prepare arguments before congress. Chairman of committee on interstate extradition. Member Oregon Dis trict Attorneys association, and Umatilla County Bar association. Has had practical experience in County Business, now serving first elective term as District Attorney. He is married and has a family consisting of wife and two children, and is a taxpayer and resident of Pendleton, Oregon. March 2, 1906 Mrs. Henry Stamper, of Weston, visited relatives in this city yesterday "Jack" Robinson, ' the Pendleton laundryman, was in the city Saturday. John McKinnon and Dan Richmond will leave next Wednesday for Alber ta. They will ship two carloads of stock, farm implements, etc. Jerry St. Dennis, the well known Frenchman residing on the reserva tion south of town, who has been seriously ill for sometime, is improv ing. The continued wet weather has brought plowing to an end for the time being. Wheat is looking well with every indication and prospect for a bumper crop. H. 0. Worthington has purchased the lot and frame building on Main street formerly owned by Green Estes. The consideration is under stood to be $500. The regular meeting of the Friday Afternoon club will be held at the home of Mrs. Fred Kershaw, next Friday, March 2 By order of Mrs, D. B. Jarman, president. . Sixteen new members are soon to be initiated into the local Rathbone Tem ple. The new members came from Adams, where at the present time there is no Rathbone lodge. F. M. Lockwood, the well known Helix farmer, was in town yesterday. Mr. Lockwood has disposed of his stock and leased his farm. He will soon start on a trip . to Alaska and his family will temporarily reside in Walla Walla. The Athena-Weston ball game in the latter city Saturday was stopped by -rain in the third inning with the score tied at three. The game at the start promised to be fast and interest ing but good playing was soon marred by wet grounds. Dr. Plamondon met with gratifying success in circulating a subscription paper for money with which to defray the expense of removing the mud from the surface of Main street. The street will be thoroughly cleaned and put in first class condition. Craghead & Hays yesterday sold three lots in the west part of town, belonging to A. L. Swaggart, to Earnest Holt for $325. Mr. Holt who is employed by the electric company as lineman, will soon commence the construction of a cottage. Noah Remillard, well known in Athena, came over from Walla Walla yesterday. Mr. Remillard will leave soon for San Francisco, where he will receive treatment by specialists for a cancerous growth on his lip. His many friends here hope for his speedy and permanent recovery. .
