AN INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER F. B. BOYD. Owner and Publisher Subscription Ratea. One copy, one year $2.00 One copy, six months $1.00 One copy, three months 75 Athena, Oregon, March 2, 1928 Measured by a reputed decrease in costs to consumer of power and gas and other utilities, since 1913 tele phone rates in Oregon have increased from 80 to 150 per cent, finds the legislative committee appointed to in vestigate the telephone situation in this state. An order to reduce rates will be requested of the Oregon public service commission, by the committee. Increased cost of wages, labor and material has been given by telephone companies as justification for increase in rates. But where the committee is given the chance to jog the Oregon public service commission into action, and throw the harpoon into telephone rates is found in the fact that other utilities have met the same increase in labor and material costs, and still were able to pass on to the consumer a decrease in rates. The loss of Harry Brooks, intripid aviator who plunged to his death in the sea off Sabastian, Florida, while trying to make aviation history in a "flivver" plane, is deplored. Brooks had the nation with him in his effort to make a non-stop record in his little two-cylinder Ford machine, for the reason that 'way down deep in most everyone's heart is cherished the hope that some day he may have a ship that is safe and cheap, and one that will give him mastery of air lanes to travel as he pleases, o The other night the mayor of Buf falo, New York, put on his fighting togs and sallied forth against the wicked cabarets in his town. When the mayor got through, the licensee had been torn from the walls of several all-nite joy incubators, boist erous patrons had been ejected, and several girls were in tears of contrit ion. In some towns the mayor is a bigger man than his police force, and seemingly this applies to Buffalo. o It isn't of len that a newspaper office offers inducement for burglar oper ations, but it appears that the esteem ed East Oregonian is an exception. However, nothing was taken by burg lars who entered the advertising am? telegraph departments of that paper one night recently, mainly for the reason, perhaps, that they had no use for a waste basket, a telegraph key and a sounder. The latest bank merger of con sequence is reported from Baker county, where financial institutions of North Powder and Haines will unite at the latter town. Following the recent merger of banks and trust companies in Greater New York, the Baker county consolidation may presage a general movement of small er banking institutions to go and do likewise. Tlie auspicious opening of a Jaurtz, Mexico, gambling joint was given an aristocratic tone we are told, by the presence of many American tourists. Well, Americans lead the way in everything anyway, and besides we have no jurisdiction over Jaurez. o After her initiation into the Hindu religion on March 8, it will all be over but the shouting this marriage of Nancy Ann Miller of Seattle, Washington, United States of Amer ica, to Tukoji Rao, ex-maharajah of Indore. Vale, Nancy Ann! o British matrons arc horrified to find that lipstick clubs are taking the place of sewing groups among the younger set in Lunnon town; and ogeegosh, the rolled stocking is just beginning to peek out through the fog. Fred Currey got out a stunning good booster edition of his LaGrandc District News, commemorating the opening of the new Sacnjawea Hotel in his old home town. A few robins have broken away from the main flock along the Pacific Highway and winged their way to Athena; doubtless in quest of spring and angleworms. . o Community banquets seem to be a habit with Athenaites lately, and as a get together movement they cannot be excelled by any other method we know of. Now Prince Henry, brother of Wales, is forming the habit of falling from his horse and getting all bunged up a habit that seems to run in the family. , .0 And now we are told that woman's craze for slimnesa is threatening the chocolate and confectionery trade. What could be more discouraging? A NEW WORLD IN THE AIR (Portland Telegram) Eddie Rickenbacker, for so we think of him still in spite of the "Captain" which recognizes his conspicuous war service, gives us a lively picture of the new commerce of the air. In an interview with a Telegram reporter he says: "Portland within a short time will be only 20 hours from New York. Every town of 500 people between here and there will have an airport. The passenger traffic of the entire country will be by air within a few years. Autos will be needed to reach the airports and for local trans portation, but the long hops will be made by air." Captain Rickenbacker believes that the manufacture of aircraft will soon be the largest industrial business in the world and that the effect of this manufacture and the use of its pro ducts will be to revolutionize business and merchandizing methods. By radio and television, merchants all over the country may look and listen in while new styles and goods are shown in some commercial center, place their orders and receive their, goods in less time than the old-time drummer took to unpack his trunk. Furthermore, this ace of aces, who has proved the warlike uses of the plane, sees it as a veritable flying dove of peace. National antipathies, misunderstandings, even those imag inary lines which are national bound aries, will be erased by the swift in tercourse of peoples made possible by airplane service. It is all a part of the amazing prophecy of the new world which science and invention are building on the old foundations. With so many wonders to look forward to, how can anyone find life uninteresting. NEW PAPER CURRENCY . (Walla Walla Union) The Treasury Department has an nounced that the new and smaller paper currency, which has . been plentifully advertised, will not reach the consumer until toward the end of the present year. Persons who have been saving up their old currency with the view to turning it in for new money must hang on a little longer, says the Seattle Times. The new bills will be approximately one-third smaller than those now in circulation. It is predicted that they will be more convenient and durable. The estimated saving to the govern ment in paper will be approximately $1,000,000 a year. The cost of replacing worn-out paper money amounts to a large sum every year. The Treasury Depart ment, with an eye to economy, first proposed to substitute silver dollars for $1 bills, but the East would not cooperate. While the West which al ways liked hard money, took the sil ver cart wheels with considerable en thusiasm, the East was too set in its ways to make a change. . Millions of new, shiny silver dollars issued to large industrial concerns by the Treasury- quickly found their way back into the government vaults. Then the Treasury Department de cided that it would save on paper by giving the people less paper to wear out. The new currency may look strango at first, but we shall get used to it in time. Anyway, when Uncle Sam puts his stamp on a piece of paper it looks good no matter what the circum stances. Bring on the short and nar row dollars 1 H. B.
