Oregon Debate Team
FPM Meet Americans
After World Tour
UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eu
gene. The University of Oregon round-the-world
debate team, now in the Far
East, will meet 20 of the leading col
leges and universities of the United
States upon their return to this country
in April, it is announced by J. K.
, Horner, debate coach. The three stu
' dents, Benoit McCroskey and Avery
' ; Thompson, of Salem, and Jack Hemp
stead, Portland, have so far debated
with teams in Hawaii, Japan, China,
the Philippines and other Far Eastern
countries, and tho trip has been very
successful, it, is stated. .
Subjects to be debated on in the
United States are expected to be those
tliat will allow the Oregon men to use
material gathered upon their trip. TEey
also plan several lectures and addresses
while on the way back to the Univer
sity. .'''':

It is also probable that debates with
coast institutions may be scheduled
during part of May, it is stated.
Alligator's Handicap
The alligator on land would starve
to death surrounded by food because It
cannot, eat or swallow except under
water. At least, a hunter of experi
ence bas said so. Their favorite food
Is fish, although they also eat meat
with relish. Their custom Is to
hibernate In the winter, season and
those In captivity often refuse to eat
during the winter months, which Is
following their hereditary habit, al
though they do not actualy disappear
from view. -

William Matthew McCorkell was
born October 20, 1846 at Londonderry,
Ireland and, died February 15, 1928.
He came to America with his parents
when a boy eleven years of age. He
was united in marriage April 14,1867
to Mis's Sarah Facknie at Lake Beau
port, Quebec, Canada. In 1888 they
came to this county and resided on
their farm located on Reed and Haw
ley Mountain until eleven years ago,
when they moved to Weston 'on ac
count of Mr. McCorkeU's blindness.
He is survived by his widow and
seven children, Jame3 McCorkell,
Craigmont, Idaho; Mrs. Walter Simp
son, Garfield, Washington; Mrs. Anna
Rothrock and Mrs. Joe Sheard, Ath
ena, Oregon; Mrs. Albert ' O'Harra,
Alex and William McCorkell' Jr.' of
Weston, also twenty three grand
children and twenty-one great grand
children. . . . ' ,

from Portland, where he was confined
in the hospital for some time.

The management of the Freewater
Times has drifted into the editorial
management of Walter A. Dudley, re
cently of Walla Walla.
, E. L. Smith, who has 4,000 acres
of wheat in the vicinity, of Helix,
says he has never seen better pros
pects for a bumper crop.
Miss Mary N. Chase, the well
known exponent of women suffrage,
will deliver an address in this city on
the evening of March 4. .
Miss Elizabeth McKinzie has re
signed her position in the Athena
public school, and. her grades have
been taker! by Mrs. Walter S. Ely.
The Weston fire department will
celebrate Washington's birthday with
a grand ball next Thursday evening.
La Brache Bros, will furnish the
music.
.Marshal Gholson and his force Of
men are getting along nicely with the
work of extending Fourth street
north across the O. R. & N. tracks
to Garfield street.
AJ L. Jones, the veteran drayman,
is confined to his home with a slight
paralytic stroke. The left side and
left arm are affected, but not serious
ly, reports Dr. Sharp.
Miss Velma Wilkinson was one of
the successful applicants, who took
the teachers' examination for third
grade certificate, before the examin
ing board at Pendleton last week.
B.' B, Richards formerly agent for
Balfour,Guthrie & Co. at Helix, has
taken G. W. Bradley's place as agent
in' this city for the Puget Sound
warehouse company. Mr. Richards en
tered on his duties Monday The
company will provide an office for
Mr. Richards on lower Mam street.
Last night at a meeting of Hose
Co. Nd. 1, of the Athena Fire depart
ment, Henry Dell was elected presi
dent; Henry Barrett, foreman;
George Marquis, assistant foreman;
Walter Ely, secretary; Charles Gay,
