Mrs. Belle Edwards left Tuesday
for Ilcppner, where she will visit her
daughter.
Mrs. Lewis Keen and son are
temporarily residing in the Christian
parsonage.
Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Harder and
daughter were in Athena Sunday
visiting relatives.
The infant son of Mr. and Mrs.
.James Cresswell has been ill for the
past two weeks.
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cunningham
were Athena visitors from Pendleton,
Saturday evening.
Marjorie Douglas spent the week
end at the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Brower, in Pendleton.
Mrs. Ida Bannister is ill and was
removed to St. Mary's hospital Tues
day, for medical care.

Miss Edna DeFreece is spending
the week-end in Milton, visiting her
sister, Mrs. Lowell Harder.
Mrs. D. H. Mansfield of Pendleton
was a visitor Saturday and Sunaay
at the A. W. Logsdon home.
Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Hansell attend
ed the funeral of Mrs. Mildred Bur
toughs in Pendleton Wednesday.
Another war was waged on Athena
coal bins as the result of the cold
snap the fore part of the week.
C. L. McGinnis, who years ago con
ducted a saloon at Weston, died re
cently at Wenatchee, Washington.
Mrs. M. L. Watts and Mrs. H. I,
Watts were guests at the Country
club in Walla Walla last Thursday.
The Christian church Missionary
society met Wednesday afternoon at
the home of Mrs. R. A. Thompson.
Mrs. Richard Thompson underwent
a minor surgical operation at St.
Mary's hospital, Walla Walla, Satur
day. Mrs. George Finch has returned
from Portland, where she was called
on account of serious illness of her
sister.
Miss Elizabeth Hollwager of WaMa
Walla, spent Sunday in Athena at
the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. B.
Richards.
Mrs. Stella Keen and Miss Zola
Keen are hostess this afternoon to
the Study club, at their home on
Fourth street.
Mr. and Mrs. Penn Harris have
moved into the cottage on Jefferson
street, recently, vacated by Mr. and
Mrs. John Stanton.
Mrs. II. I. Watts entertained a few
friends Friday afternoon when two
tables of bridge were at play. Mrs.

Mrs. II. A. Barrett second scoivi
while Mis. F. S. I.eGrow received
consolation. Popcorn, candy and
punch were served during the afternoon.

school bookkeeping class investigated
the accounting system at the Rogers
& Goodman store. Tuesday morn ng

A large number of Athena friends
of the late Mrs. Eugene Shrimpf at
tended her funeral in Weston Sunday.
The Jolly Twenty club, of which she
was a loved member, was present.
Mrs. E. C. Prestbye has returned
from an extended visit with relatives
at Seattle. Mrs. Prestbye went to
Seattle before the holidays, and Mr.
Prestbye went over and spent Christ
mas.
Ralph McEwen returned from Port
land Tuesday, after spending several
weeks with Mrs. McEwen and sons,
Ralph Jr., and Edwin. Mr. McEwen
will get his farm outfit ready for
spring work.
J. C. Harwood is driving a new
Pontiac sedan. "Hardy" we believe,
gave up his old Jewett with a pang
of regret. He had driven it many
thousands of miles, and it was good
for many more.
The food sale which Mrs. Jess
Smith's division of the Baptist wo
men's Society had expected to hold on
Saturday January 21 has been post
poned until Saturday, January 28 on
account of bad roads.
Section Foreman Ramsay of the
Northern Pacific, says there is ser
ious need of culverts on the new high
way leading north from town, to
handle flood waters so that the N. P.
tracks may be protected.
J. N. York, prominent Weston
farmer, who was kicked by a horse
during the Arthur Douglas sale,
Wednesday of last week, was not
seriously injured as was first report
ed, and has recovered from a minor
injury.
A carload of Oliver plows and
Superior drills arrived this week at
the farm implement department of
the Rogers & Goodman store. Clar
ence Barney and Brooks Anderson
have been engaged in setting up the
machinery.
Elmer E. Clever, former resident
of this county, died at his home in
Portland, Tuesday after a long ill
ness. Before he died he expressed
the wish that his body be cremated
and his ashes scattered in the Blue
Mountains.
Miss Louise Porter, teacher in
the third and fourth grades of the
Athena public schools, has resigned
on account of ill health. Her place
has been taken by Mrs. M. I. Miller.
Miss Porter resides with her parents
at Freewater.
On account of ill health Miss Fred
erica Kershaw has been compelled to
resign temporarily as head of the
music department of the Ontario,
Oregon, high school. Miss Kershaw
is at the home of her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. J. F. Kershaw, in Athena.
The two light cases of smallpox in
the Mayberry family, residing on the
West Side, are convalscent and the
quarantine will soon be lifted. No
new cases have been reported in the
city. A number of sore arms are
being carried as a result from vac
cination. It may be of some interest to
Jinks Dudley, who is wintering at
Long Beach, California, to be inform
ed that Steelheads are beginning to
run in the lower Umatilla, and that a
number of his Athena cronies are
preparing their fishing tackle to
catch a few.
Owing to floods to the north, west
bound O. W. R. & N. trains have
been running late on the Washington
division, between Spokane and Pend
leton. Again Sand Hollow and Greasewood
have been on a flood rampage, and
uniting with the waters of Wild
Horse creek, the highway at points

west of Adams was again overflow
ed. No material damage resulted
from the freshet, which was caused
by snow melting on the higher land
to the north.
A trial fusion of the Baptist and
Christian churches of Hermiston has
been entered into in an effort to
combine the membership and re
sources of the two bodies. If the
trial unification of the two bodies
proves successful, the merger will be
made permanent.
Mrs. M. M. Johns went to Van
couver, Washington last week where
on Sunday she helped to celebrate her
sister and husband's golden anniver
sary. Mrs. Johns left Tuesday even
ing for California, where she ex
pects to spend the remainder of the
winter with her son Melville and
family.
The Methodist Episopal church
missionary society will meet at the
home of Mrs. Wm. McPherson, next
Wednesday afternoon. Members are
requested to bring needle work.
Harry McBride, farmer of upper
Wild Horse creek, is contemplating
engaging in the dairy business on an
extensive scale.
The Etude Club entertained their
husbands Thursday evening in the
Christian church party room. It was
in the nature of a costume party
and some very clever and unique
costumes were in evidence. Games
were the diversion of the evening,
and were planned by a committee.
Refreshments were served.
This evening at 7:30 the people of
Athena will be given a musical treat
at the Baptist Church. A choir and
orchestra consisting of forty voices
and pieces from the First Baptist
church of Pendleton will render
selections consisting of gospel songs,
Negro spirituals and melodies,
orchestra and single vocal selections.
This choir and orchestra is the best
trained church musical organization
in eastern Oregon. Rev. Bollinger
says you will miss a treat if you fail
to hear these young people in their
christian musical service.

grade teacher, has been forced to
withdraw from school for a few weeks
on account of illness. Mrs. M. I.
Miller is taking her place.
Miss Bateman attended the Mac-
Hi-Pendleton basketball game Friday
evening, in Milton.
M. I. Miller refereed basketball
games at Weston Friday and Monday
evenings.
Mr. and Mrs. Toole attended the
Mac-Hi-Pendleton basketball game
Friday evening.
Mr. Fredericks, who has been
teaching civics, is now teaching
biology, and Mr. Toole is now teach
ing one division of freshman algebra.
Mr. Meyer is teaching the new class
in ecomonics.

Meyer gave a short talk before all
the students on the beginning of the
second semester work, the rules of
school, and regulations of the courses.
Those exempt in all four subjects
for last semester were: Alberta
Charlton, Jessiedeane Dudley," Helen
Hansell, Marguerite Moore, and Kath
leen Radtke.
Mr. Toole's bookkeeping class and
biology class were all exempt
Dorothy Geissel has been busy this
week collecting student body fees for
this semester.

This will follow civics and will be
taken by all seniors.
The senior class will hold a cooked

at 10 o'clock.
The junior class discussed wav of
raising money for the junior-senior
banquet at a class meeting Wednes
day afternoon. It was decided to sell
candy at the home basket games.
Girl's Athletics
The girl's basketball team, which
has been nicknamed by some as "Tho
Fighting Six." has scheduled
with Stanfield at Stanfield for Satur
day night, January 21. The girls
have been victorious by large scores
in their first three games of the
season, but it is expected that this
will be a hard contest.

Weldon and Armand Bell were in
Walla Walla, Saturday.
Emma Ringel was in Pendleton
Saturday.
Oral Michener, Clifford Wood and
Eldon Myrick went to Milton Friday
night to see the Mac-Hi-Pendleton
basketball game.
