H. Upjohn ex-member of the narole board. the three or any one of them, found in their "careful inquiry" and "exhaustive investigation," to cause any doubt whatsoever as to the guilt of Pend er in the atrocious hatchet murder of Mrs. Daisy Wehrman and her in fant son. And that is just what the public wants to know. Continuing the Portland paper says: "It could not have been the evi dence in the case, for it was suf ficiently clear and positive to con vince a jury beyond a reasonable doubt. "Moreover it was sufficiently con clusive of Pender's guilt to cause the supreme court of the state to affirm the verdict of the jury. "Nor was there any new evidence discovered following the trial and conviction of Pender. What then prompted the two ex governors and the parole board to nullify and set at naught the ver dict of twelve good men and the judgment of the highest tribunal of the state? "Politics and the lamentations of the sob sisters. "Thnt and nothing else. "And just so long as we have men of the type of West and Olcott in the executive chair and men of the type of Upjohn on the parole board we are going to have Fenders run ning at large assaulting defenseless women. "As indicated in a previous edi torial, it would seem as though it was high time that we so safegard the pardoning power that clemency can be extended in homicide cases on newly discovered evidence alone, and then only on a review of such evidence and the approval thereof by our supreme court." o No event in the history of grain farming since the invention of the reaper in 18131 has attracted so much attention as the success of the harvester-thresher in central and east ern states. Up to five years ago the most enthusiastic combine manufact urer would have hesitated to sell a machine east of a line drawn frm Grand Forks, North Dakota, to Hous ton, Texas. This year, Pennsylvania is among the most ardent advocates of the new havesting system. Farm ers everywhere seem to be eager to share in the great saving enjoyed by western grain growers from the use of the harvester-thresher, but the majority want to have their neighbors try it first. o Modesty keeps many of us from reporting to the editor news of local interest news of our own little so cial gathering at which we were host or hostess, or at least a guest. But it is false modesty that keeps us, in most instances, from telling the edi tor about it. Remember that1 the community is interested, that every one concerned will be pleased to see his or her name in print, and that the editor really wants you to call up or to drop around to the office about it. He simply can't keep up with all those affairs that interest you and your set, but he will ap preciate your cooperation every time, and he'll reciprocate by treating you right. tively estimated that old Umatilla county produced $15,000,000 in crops and products this year. o Tokay grapes are being shipped from Grants Pass, and baskets to hold them come from Tokyo, Japan.
