One copy, one year $2.00 One copy, six months $1.00 One copy, three months " Athena, Oregon October 28 1927 BRANCH BANKING A financial journal finds that the greatest evidence of the strength and practicability of branch banking is found in the passage of the McFad den bill by Congress. For the first time there appears in the laws of the country, legislative reference to and recognition of the branch bank ing system, which applies the same principal to general banking that was successfully introduced on a nation. wide basis in the development of the Federal Reserve System of branches, The basic idea of diversification, uni fied direction and uniformity in banking practice, choracterizes both organizations. Criticism that branch banking, be cause of its possibility for expan sion, will develop a money trust, is as groundless as the charge that the building up of great power systems to serve the public need not develop a power trust. Increasing size of banks and pow er companies causes them to be in creasingly careful to keep their op erations free from grounds for criti cism. Mere size is no reason, to at tack industry or banking today. Ser vice to the public is the measure by which to gauge the desirability of any institution. Public regulation and our present laws will prevent abuse of power by banks or electric companies. o - PREVENTION VS. INSURANCE It is often said, and yet seems to be worth continually repeating, says an exchange, and causes losses far beyond the actual damage in dollars to property. The loss of time to going con- terns through fires, losses to em ployes through delay in rehabilita tion ;thc discouragement that often is indicated after a serious fire; all these things are not figured in the estimates but count materially in the advancement or recession of com munities suffering from great fires. From every standpoint it is well to guard against fires; prevention is far ahead of the next best thing adequate insurance. o ' That Portland is some port i3 again disclosed by the number of cargo ships arriving in its harbor during the month of September, a total of 180. Forty-seven ships vis ited the port in one week. The im portance of Portland as a port re flects to the great advantage of East ern Oregon and Eastern Washington and any effort to better the facilities of that port is likewise the making of bettor shipping conditions for the export products of the Inland Em pire. By the same token, anything detrimental to the port of Portland or the river channel from Portland to the sea, materially affects the transportation of our pro ducts. Therefore there is well grounded opposition to any bridge or other artificial construction that may in future interrupt the free and unobstructive passage of Inljuid Em pire products to the sea lanes. o A general demise of the inrnival with its questionable perfonnar.ces and sure-thing gamesters is near at hand. In its place, the amusement park with its swimming tank, merry-go-round, miniature railway and other clean sport novelties, under supervision of responsible civic au thorities, furnishes fun and frolic for the young and interest for their el ders. The bunk is giving way before the pressure of decency in amusements. em Oregon.
